Every blackwidow web i have seen as well as touch is INCREDIBLY sticky and soooo strong. I have seen reptiles in these webs. I would also like to state PLEASE give them appropriate coverage these aren't like tarantulas they like somewhat damp solitary dark places. I would find them under rocks, in the trashbin, in a dark crevice on the outside of the wall, at the base of the basketball hoop, in a cellar, etc. These were all wild specimens as they are incredibly indigenous to where I grew up... (yes I would roll over rocks very carefully as a kid looking for lizards, and yes there were close calls, but we always put our fingers where we could see them or would use our feet...one rock had 6 full grown girls underneath (yes I think if circumstances are right you might be able to have a communal just give them a bigger space o.o)
@AnonningAnon
@AnonningAnon 9 месяцев назад
You can have a communal and they live well together. Leokimvideo did an experiment with redbacks a while back when he was exterminating the red backs on his property, due to a very nasty red back infestation

We have many common Housespiders, I think. Similar Body type and Net, Hunting Style. I feed some wild Spiders Catarpillars from our Plants. I witnessed multiple Times how they hunt. One fought, stole and hauled a 3 Times bigger, live Catarpillar up and away into hiding. They attach multiple Strings in choosen Spots to haul immobilized prey around. They drag, attach, cutting Strings and repeat that until they're secure, it's safe. No sticky Web needed. Don't think they even have that. Love the Style of our Uloborus Plumipes Spiders. They Prey on tiny Flys mainly. Nonstick Nets, no Venom, fastest Webbing I ever seen. They web Prey thick and crush it. They get introduced with Plants into Greenhouses worldwide.

I really appreciate the spider feeding videos, I think that seeing the every day spider eat in the macro lens. When I was younger I used to feed all types of spiders around the house to watch and see what it looked like. But it looks so much better this close up :) I am in a Entomemeology Facebook group and we are always calling things "recluses" when we see a centipede, Leggy recluse, caterpillar, green segmented recluse.

I use to keep common house spiders (parasteatoda tepidariorum) which are related to black widows, they are both in the family Theridiidae, and how they interacted with prey was the same as shown in this video. They would throw web at prey stuck in their web and only after it was thoroughly entangled would they bite it. Then they would take the prey closer to their "hiding spot" or where ever they were hanging in the web and either eat it after it liquefied or let it sit there in a longer term storage, like a larder, if they were not that hungry. Also as an interesting aside, I and a few other people I have talked to who have kept comb-footed spiders think they have at least basic logic and reason abilities having watched them work though problems in captivity. They are a fun group of spiders to keep!

OK, I don't know what's going on with YOUR Black Widow spiders, but out here in Arizona, our Western Black Widow girls have some of the strongest webbing in nature. I have actually seen hummingbirds come every morning and harvest big girl's webs from the night before to use to hold their nests together like a bungee net! They are chaotic looking, but she wields it like an expert fly fisher. 🥰
@rebel4466
@rebel4466 9 месяцев назад
I think they improve their webs as needed. No wind, no tearing, no structure needed. But the US black widows are quite strong compared to others, except maybe the redback in Australia (Latrodectus hasselti). Your Latrodectus hesperus are no doubt capable of very strong webbing. The spiders they call "banana spider" in Florida (Nephila clavipes) probably have some of the strongest webbing available. If you check out pictures of them feeding, they basically catch anything. Full sized bird to snakes and lizards. Very gentle spiders though. Bite risk outside of catching something in their web is basically unheard of and their venom isn't potent to begin with.

Hi Petco! I am from California and I grew up with Latrodectus hesperus, AKA, western black widow. When I was young, I remember being terrified to take out the trash because they would hang out by the big dumpster to catch flies and roaches that would come for the food trash. The messy web is so strong it would freak me out if I accidentally touched it. It would feel like it was holding on and I just knew the spider was gonna get me, even though it never actually happened. 🕷❤

I’ve found them coming down from the eves outside my house. I’ve learned and have been told that they pack and ever harder punch venom wise, but not as likely to bite. But who knows? You spider is likely a Steatoda sp. false widow. They are in the same family as the real widows (Theridiidae) and common all over the world pretty much. They usually have either white or red markings (S. paykulliana), but their colors can differ from a lighter brown to a pretty much black. Steatoda grossa for example has markings, but sometimes you can't see them very well. Interesting fact: The bite of a real widow can cause "Latrodectism", that of a Steatoda can cause "Steatodism". It's basically a weaker version of the widow bite. You can see a couple horror stories about their bite, but bad outcomes are rare.
