I had to go both ways with my situation. I sold everything with value, drove a piece of junk truck and worked like a slave for years. Now, my family is set up to do well no matter what the economy does and I still drive the piece of junk truck locally. My wife hates it but it’s still running-ish for now. Being a millionaire is easy by math. The hard part is getting past the pessimistic psychosis of doing the dirty work.

We share one SUV. We have been saving and will start to look for a second vehicle soon. I want to get a car and he wants a truck. He claims we need it for the 4/all wheel drive. We already have an SUV. Maybe 2 weeks out of the year we get enough snow that we wouldn't be able to use a car. I keep pointing out that the cost of the truck estimates paying for the truck bed which we don't need.

Exactly right! I remember working with a guy who bought a charger around 2009 when they brought it back for the first time. It was $40k and he ranted and raved and always talked about it. He was always pushing for me to get one. We were both blue collar at the time and I was making $15/hr and I was lucky to get 20 hours a week. I told him I couldn't imagine buying a car, something that loses value, for more than what I make in a year. He told me that doesn't matter and that we deserve it for working so hard. I was 21 and this guy was in his 40's. I'm so thankful for God's wisdom and disagreeing with him. I'm making nearly 10x's that now and he's still in the same job with the same mindset.

I'm 51 and lived all my life in the US, though I've traveled abroad. When I was a child, the folks who had trucks actually used them for work. They were in a trade, worked a farm, etc. Some years ago, the auto companies started marketing "big" vehicles (trucks, SUVs, etc) to the ordinary consumer. I live in a suburb and plenty of folks have trucks that have never been off road, hauled hay, or carried equipment. Plenty of folks also have sedans. In some cities, it's difficult to near impossible to do without a car. The city where I live is one such place. Public transit systems is way off topic, but, IMO, the US could do better. However, car centric doesn't equate to Big A$$ Expensive Truck. Like anything humans touch, objects can quickly become status symbols for many. That said, there are plenty of people in the US, who regard a car as tool to get them from A to B and aren't concerned with driving a status symbol.

I needed a truck. Hunted around and found one, not running, for 200 bucks. By the time I had it licensed and on the road I was into it for about 800 bucks. That was four years ago and I still drive it every day. Does everything I need it to do.

Dude earns 50K a year, feels entitled to a 2019 truck he can't afford with a hefty payment...AND they still have 30K left to pay on it! No! Tooooo much! Living in a broken trailer with huge costs to maintain and a $650 car payment...both are going down in value...not having those would have their financial life getting healthier. Plus him seeking a promotion in his mechanic career and her tutoring online instead of settling for that $100 a day substitute teacher job would significantly increase their wealth and reduce stress

A disel mechanic making $25/hr? If you go make $30/hr which is doable and get rid of the truck...thats a $20k a year raise She could find something that isnt taxing for more money without playing victim and make another $10k. If you have ever driven through a mobile home its about 50/50. 50% drive beaters and 50% drive cars with payments more than their mobile home payment

I agree with all the logic here, but you have to be really careful this day and age buying an older used car repair prices are insane right now. A remanufactured transmission for a Silverado they wanted almost $10,000 for installed. The universe tends to balance out if you try to save upfront on something you’re going to pay on the backend. They might get back $10,000 from selling the truck but if they have to repair an old used vehicle. It could cost them thousands. Average repair of a Dodge ram was over $1000 per visit according to data collected.

The caller overwhelmed the show with financial issues. The response I heard was sell the expensive depreciating truck, sell the single wide depreciating mobile home with expensive repairs, rent an apartment, try to make extra income hopefully. It was a very short reply and when the situation seemed hopeless I couldn’t take it anymore. Some situations seem hopeless. I usually bail out early. Still watching though.

I'm ok with the advice that George had, except for the..."move out of the trailer and go rent somewhere to save money" part. Reason is, yes the caller said they are putting money into the trailer, but they could stop putting anything into other than absolutely needed repairs. Stay there to save money. I'll bet their mortgage on the trailer is far lower than renting somewhere.

62k household income should not sound this desperate. There's no way I put 30-40k into a trailer when that's a house down payment. If the trailer is in bad condition, I'm selling it to try to cover the note and moving to an apartment first. Sell the truck... $5k replacement vehicle and start to work out of debt, then build for house down payment. 10k a year of the pre-tax income is going just to truck payments. Add insurance/gas/maintenance and that truck is taking a $15k/year bite out of them (~25%!!!). Sell what you can, and see if you can find any way to push up income $500/month (more if possible) for a couple of years.

There is nothing wrong with living in a trailer, and there is nothing wrong with making $50,000 a year, and there is nothing wrong with a $650 truck payment. The problem is that when you put them all together, you have a spending habit that will set you back financially to a crippling degree. If this is just a person alone, then you get to choose the crippling route if you want that, but when you have a family, you have to give up some of your wants for the needs of that family.
