Appreciate your response bro. My band uses plenty of studio magic to make songs sound better, and I admit that freely. We're good musicians, but we do exactly what everyone else does, and then use the album as the "standard" to compare our live shows against. I don't think I was trying to discourage anyone from using those tricks, I was just explaining that if you see a musician playing perfectly in a supposed "off-the-cuff" Instagram clip, take an extra second and be critical about what you're hearing. I'm typing this as I am taking a break from editing takes together to make them sound perfect. Thanks for calling me a big RU-vidr! 🙂

First time I heard Immortal was live, and Abbath being newly appointed as guitarist had trouble playing the intricate parts, but nobody cared a millisecond, that's where the emotion actually lies, and the capacity to get over mistakes is the mark of the superior musician. Bad people make mistakes and don't do anything about them. Mediocre people make no mistakes. Good people make mistakes and correct them. Strive for greatness, but f|_|ck perfection win an Arrow. On a side note, I heard nothing warranting trickery in the Arch Enemy sequence -_-

I disagree with 'Kirk can't play his solos live'. During the 80s he played very well live. Check out their live videos during the 80s, Kirk was on fire (as was the rest of the band). Something happened in the 90s with Kirk, he can't play for shit now. As far as the 'emotion' is concerned, I always wanted bands to sound good live. I knew they wouldn't sound as good live as in the studio, however I wanted to see a good performance. We'll leave Lars' modern drum skills alone ...

The eternal argument: Tattoo artists get the same guff. They're among the ONLY artists allowed to steal other people's artwork, make money from it and don't pay the original artist. All it compelled me to do as an artist, was "up my game" to a point where it'd be extremely difficult to copy my work - to the point where I made conscious forays into digital arenas (also considered "cheating" in certain artistic circles). I think that should be the general direction not the destination, per se.
@rockrenegade

When my band first started, we had a RADAR style hard disk recorder (No DAW style random access editing) to cut our demos on and having no idea about all the recording studio tricks, we'd insist on playing our tracks start to finish. We didn't even punch in if we made a mistake. Not because I didn't know how, but because we thought all those bands were that good and that's how it was done. and that we'd have to if we were ever going to be a killer live band. We'd start entirely over until the performance was perfect in one pass. I do appreciate how good and tight it made us a live band which was a huge part of how we developed our following but it's funny looking back how our naivety informed our sound from the beginning.
@SaintKines
@SaintKines 2 года назад
I've always broken it into 2 parts. There's the studio where you should be doing whatever works to get your recording to sound the way you and your band want. Then there is live which is where the band performs their songs either to just perform them the way they are known and loved or maybe a reinterpretation of the songs. The only issues I ever take with stuff like this is when I find out or feel that I was misled or deceived. The Kiss Live album is a beloved classic but it's also kind of lame because of some of the cheating in my opinion.

Great video! These arguments have been going on since The Monkees got shit on for not playing on their albums lol. Almost no live albums by major artists are purely live and recorded from only one show (unless it’s archive releases like what Neil Young is releasing these days). The only live album that I know of that has no overdubs is Van Morrison’s “It’s too late to stop now” and that’s compiled from several shows. Led Zeppelin’s “How the west was won” is a patchwork quilt of two shows. They are putting out a quality product that has a high standard and that’s fine. I also love bootlegs because I get to hear the mistakes and hear when they hit the highs. It’s ok to enjoy both. I’m interested in hearing good songs and good performances and if the tricks in the studio can help, then all the better. There has always been a lot of snobbery about “keeping it real” lol. What does that even mean today?
@jinzo664

I'm confused Owen. In previous videos you said not to use metronomes, drum machines, copy & pastes, etc. But here you're saying it's okay to do those things? Do you mind clarifying that for me, or maybe make a follow up video?
@anjy2l332
@anjy2l332 2 года назад
You're asking Owen, "why aren't apples oranges?" Answer, because apples aren't oranges.
@SamFisher338
@SamFisher338 2 года назад
Also, on most Type O Negative albums (which I know Owen loves, and so do I) the drums are just drum machines even though they had a drummer. Most Bathory albums too. And they're all legendary. And playing live in studio is cool but sometimes it's 100% not a possibility, be it because of the style or budget. Pretty much 99% of the legendary albums aren't anyway. I think it's ok to leave mistakes or imperfections, and they often add to the music. One time I was editing the drums midi from a guitar pro tab to sync every beat with the original song (it was Hammer Smashed Face) for a cover video my girlfriend was doing and it was baffling how much the tempo varied, it took me hours to do it. There are bands that record live and in as few takes as possible like Darkthrone, bands that try to sound tight and even cheat a bit to do it like Metallica on MOP, and bands like most of today's djent that take that to a new level with extreme editing and etc. And everything in between. It's just up to the listener to decide what to listen to.

An interesting other perspective. I like it. I also liked Dean's. It's just the whole perfection thing in instagram and it can be misleading especially towards the inexperienced. We are all humans. What I like about your video is you show examples of how this was done even before the digital age.

I make an example of success before the digital age because I have a mini agenda. I'm convinced the DAW/internet killed rock and metal. I don't think the cheating aspect of the DAW is the only aspect of rocks decline. I think cheating got copied when producers in the past would hold thier cards (and session musicians, amps etc) close to thier chests.

I think both methods are completely relevant and valid. It’s really up to us, the listener to decide what we want to listen to. If no one listened to Arch Enemy, then they wouldn’t be touring the world and making a ton of albums. However, there is a HUGE demand for realness in metal/rock. There’s not enough bands doing it except for Fit For An Autopsy, Opeth, and a handful of others. We live in the age where there are no barriers to the art we want to create other than the barriers we set up for ourselves.

Other artists preferred the one-take approach, like on many early Bowie albums, you're hearing the first vocal take, and first guitar solo and band takes as well. Most of Man Who Sold the World was recorded live, with very loud amps, according to Woody Woodmansy. Jean Genie is take one. Bowie was known to have been insistent about keeping first takes then. The Beatles are a great example of taking both approaches as they saw fit. Some of their best stuff are tracked-out masterpieces, but they were always very serious about weighing that vs. recording live, as with Let it Be.

Personally, I'm over extreme metal as a genre anyways. The music I like nowadays generally sits between 20/80 and 80/20 pop appeal vs musicianship. I am completely over harsh, unmelodic vocals, especially where you can't hear the lyrics at all. Re: copying. Copying is fine as a learning tool, but you have to actually learn. Maybe you start copy/paste and break down the signal chain. Then next tone you look at the specific gear but figure out the settings. Eventually you create it from scratch. In any case, it's a skill and you stop copy/pasting tones and actually make something of your own. On that note -- do Winery Dogs!

It's boring, for example I prefer the imperfections of The Beatles, it's easier to connect with because it's "human" rather than perfect and hyper rationalised. I'll admit I semi cheated on a guitar solo cover of Play with Me by Extreme, I used a take from 2 weeks prior to recording the vid and used that instead of the vid take as it was better. Then melodyned it because it's in E flat and my FR guitar is in E standard (in the original vid take I tuned down to E flat but it screwed up the action and intonation a bit). It is cool to see how the instrument has progressed and free lessons by great teachers is awesome. But on the flip side guitar music as a whole has suffered. Just my opinion of course.

Metallica hasn’t tuned to E standard since the 80s. It’s E flat. Has always been E flat.

I'm old and I saw all the classic thrash bands live. Metallica definitely couldn't play their hardest songs very well. Megadeth was the same. I saw Children of Bosom and they were super sloppy. All these years I thought these bands were just drunk.

Metallica recoded master of puppets at half speed and sped the tapes up later to make it sound tighter lol

Metal is the disco of rock music. Metal is the plastic surgery addict who killed rock and stole his name 2+ decades ago.

They sped it up because of how it sounded, not because they coudnt play it that fast.. All downpick Master of puppet is not that hard for some people. Some people just have that natural ability and Hetfield is one of them. They just have a faster wrist, so it takes less endurance for them to achieve this. Look at the guitar player for the Ramones. All downpick all the time.. The guy never had to work at it or anything, he just had that ability. Also Kirk cant play his solos live? Just stop dude, they might not sound as clean as on the records but thats with every guitars player. Hes not sitting down, concentrating on his solo, hes running around giving a show. Theres a million bootlegs out there proving that he can play his solos just fine. Theres also a million bootlegs out there proving that they sounded just as good live as they do on Live shit during the Justice era.

I'm pretty sure I've read that they did it because Cliff couldn't play it tight at full speed.

@@SamFisher338 Well yea its about how tight it sounds.. Its hard to explain, but try recording the intro to Master of puppets.. See how it sounds compare to them. A big part of that is also that insane guitar tone they use.

I've always been of the mindset of if you can't pull it off live??? Don't record it. Now,....I've gotta disagree about some of your "theories". Necrophagist is that tight live, recorded, or otherwise without question. I've seen them live 3 times. Listen to Origin. You'll say there is no way. It is really that tight my guy. I played 4 shows with those guys. Paul Ryan is an absolute monster. Seems to me your a little sour about certain issues and insecure about your own abilities. Does KISS cheat?? Absolutely. Does Kirk Hammett suck?? 100%. But I'm not so sure some of the things you claim are going on just because you can't attain a tone or tightness in your playing. That's more of a personal problem my guy. Good luck with all that.

Kirk Hammett sucks? WTF? His WRITING, tone, expression of those solos was AMAZING. I litteraly said Necrophagist can play what they write live. I just made a claim re thier production. Who cares how good I am? WTF does that have to do with Kirk Hammett launching a million guitar ships with his MASSIVE talent? I'm sour is an understatement btw because of guitar drones like you. TECHNICALITY IS AT AN ALL TIME HIGH. And interest is an all time low. You can't read between the lines?

@@CIRCLEOFTONE Awwww. Him twiggered. Wuv him heawt Word. Him uptet. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 What a complete TOSSER. YES KIRK HAMMETT ABSOLUTELY SUCKS AND DOESNT DESERVE THE ENDORSEMENTS AND FREE GUITARS ESP HANDS HIM. Have you heard him try to play in any live setting sir??? Have you??? 🤨 Its absolutely abhorrent. And we won't even get into how much if a problem Bob Rock had trying to get a presentable solo for the black album. He is a f_cking train wreck. If it weren't for the pentatonic scale, and the wah wah pedal??? He'd be sellin tacos on skid row. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Period.

@@theariesexperiment4642 You sound like a forum from the 90's. Kirk wah bad? Soooo original. Modern metal bots like you really do copy and paste everything eh? Have you ever had an original thought? You even repeated my claim that Kirk can't play his solos live. Haha. I litteraly said that in my video so you copy and pasting it in "your" response is PERFECT.
