Can you fill a keyboard with mineral oil? Surely a liquid dampens noise better than foam or gel
@illitero
@illitero Год назад
Sound travels better off of and through most liquids. Oil would likely mute it a bit, but it would be a sloshy mess to fill it enough to contact the PCB or generate a higher pitch keystroke sound from reducing the effective size of the sound cavity. But hey, who isn't down for a sloppy, wet keyboard? hahaha
@auctoritate8254

Kinda cool fact: one of the chemicals used to make aerogel, tetramethyl orthosilicate, is basically pure sand but in liquid form. It reacts with water to turn into its solid form, and becomes super super fine, but is insanely dangerous. This is because if you get it in your eyes it reacts with the water in your eyes and turns solid, but does so under the surface of your eyeballs, and causes permanent blindness. Also if you inhale it then it reacts with the water in your lungs, and having sand in your lungs is bad (shocker).

Aerogel is commonly used as a insulator for heat (works amazingly well) and to catch space debris. There are lots of other uses but these two are the most common. @@KukaiTori its extremely brittle so it crumbles easy. Its safe if you get it on you, it just likes to absorb the oil and moisture from your skin. Just wash your hands after and you're all good. It only hardens when you make it (manufacture). When it absorbs liquids and oils, it expands slightly, turns to more of a white color and basically turns to dust when you touch it or try and move it. If it gets in your eyes you just need to rinse it out well and you're all good.

@Tosfan_73
@Tosfan_73 Год назад
Honest thoughts from someone who isn’t in the keyboard scene and only clicked because I wanted to see something done with aerogel (thanks a LOT) here’s what I thought of each noise. No foam- my favorite of the bunch. Foam- sounds exactly the same as no foam but like the audio was pitched up. Deeper sounded better. Aerogel- sounded akin to our crazy neighbor Caryn from Las Vegas who would tap her acrylic fingernails really fast on our ceramic counter when she got really into talking very loudly about something that made her anxious. A bit too solid sounding and gave me shivers in a bad way. (Does this count as childhood trauma?) My iPhone keyboard clicks through my headphones as I type this message that will get me hate probably- 10/10 😂 BUT- whoever this guy is, I like listening to him and his humor more than I like listening to the keyboards. My computer is a 2001 dell with a 20 year old crayola keyboard so maybe I’m biased to the nostalgic plasticky tapping sound.

I just buy a tube of 100% silicone calk and use that as a filler. You can use cornstarch to keep it from sticking and being a permanent mod. Also you can get grout silicone in a bunch of different colors at a tile store. Very cheap and effective and will fit any board.
@MrMilarepa108
@MrMilarepa108 Год назад
Ugh, that's so backyard. There's silicone mold mixes with different viscosities and without the nasty ammonia that's contained in caulking. And why use cornstarch when there's mold release spray? If you want to do it, do it right.
@OrganicGreens
@OrganicGreens Год назад
@@MrMilarepa108 Its because its cheap and causes no issues. I'm not paying 25 dollars for mold release when cornstarch works just fine and I alredy have it. As far as the ammonia goes I don't care as the 100% silicone calk with no fungicide I use has no noticeable smell after it dries. If it's good enough for my bathtub it's good enough to be under a keyboard. Silicone is silicone. Be a elites prick If you want.

@@placeholder3863 because density is what dampens sound waves? different ranges of densities and materials depending on the frequencies you are targeting. aerogel is 99% air....... 1% silica is going to do nothing. you may as well take a silicone sheet, cut it so that it only has a single molecular bond for height, and you will have yourself the equivalent of what aerogel can do for sound dampening, nothing.

Making it a bit louder and clickier without increasing the amount of force or actuation distance or something maybe, but that's probably just a matter of finding the right switches(currently Gateron Brown tactile switches for a mix of gaming, academic, and software development workloads).
