I've been trying for two years to find the high-gain tone for my "None More Black" stage and studio rig.
After a LOT of searching, testing, and demoing, I finally found the distortion pedal I've been looking for. It's taking a permanent spot on my main rig, which serves as both my gigging stack and my metal rig.
Enter the Empress Effects HEAVY MENACE...an insane adaptation of their classic two-channel HEAVY, but with some juicy features added on.
First, the profile is downscaled to a single pedal space. They've added a lot more nuance and guts to the onboard noise gate (which also now functions separately as a main gate for the rest of your board), spliced in a separate mid-frequency control for the 200Hz to 2.5kHz range, and added an extra "Lite(ish)" distortion channel so you can get some sexy, classic crunch tones in addition to the monstrously amazing and legendary heavy tones.
This one was provided by the manufacturer for the demo, and is NOT on the 2023 Great Canadian Pedalboard, because it wasn't released until my birthday (May 10). You can check it out on the Empress website at empresseffects.com/products/h...

I'm really happy with this pedal. The EQ and the gate cannot be understated as key features. You can get all sorts of distortion sounds out of it. Took about a day messing with it to work out 4 different configurations that I like for different contexts.

I have this Heavy Menace distortion since 3 days and it's impressive, the sound reproduces each note perfectly, cleanly, even with a lot of gain. Thanks to the "weight" button, the palm-mutes come out huge, heavier, louder! The highs come out without being aggressive or tiring. The gate is also super well calibrated! I had many hi-gain distortion pedals (Blackstar Dist-X, Boss Metalzone, EV Metalmuff, Guyatone MetalMonster...) and the Empress HM is far above. It transforms any tube amp clean channel into a Hi-gain channel.

Great video and great looking/sounding pedal. It might knock the MT-2 (probably the driver behind the two-band mid concept) and NS-2 off my board, as well as maybe a few other dirt pedals... I like having options

Thanks Greg! I usually run a plexi- or amp-style distortion and a high-gain distortion (the Donner Giant Metal is a pretty ballin' little box too...that's the one I've been using for a few years now so don't sell it short!) with a TS808 style OD in front. I also use an NS-2, but I keep a Rowin or Donner Noise Killer right after the distortions to get that clamping effect. Put them in the loop switcher as a set so they go on and off with each other. But with this one in place, I can keep the overdrive in front of it, get rid of the plexi distortion, and drop the mini noise gate AND the NS-2. Because I'm also using an Empress Buffer+, I can use THAT to provide noise suppression in the FX loop. So functionally this plus the buffer replaces two noise gates (and six cables!) and one distortion on that board. I can't wait to get this in a mix for you guys...but, the contest demands most of my attention these days. That, and trying to pay for it all LOL.

Dude…? Your guitar is outta’ tune. Intonation is off. Also what power tubes in the amp that this pedal is going through?

The mid freq knob isn't that new, Boss MT-2 has it since '91 or whenever it came out (the Behringer pedal you've mentioned is a clone of it). But it's certainly less rare these days.

It's new on the Heavy. I did mention the Behringer as well as the Airis Savage Drive, but it's an update to the evolution of this pedal, and most don't have such a wide sweep to the frequency.

I have this pedal and blows me AWAY great distortion whit definition best pedal off distorcion...my Revv g3 loses four this one

What power supply are you using for that pedal? I get a buzz when i engage the bypass with the power supply i found since it did not come with one. Does it take a 9v battery as well? I tried the power supply from my RP255 pedal which works fine on that pedal. That pedal also a modeling processor so maybe too much…

You'll find that most modern pedals don't take a battery, unless you have an outboard battery connector, and very VERY few ship with their own power supply. That's normal, because the intention is that you connect it on your pedalboard using a pedalboard power supply of some kind. This one takes a 9V center negative power supply with a minimum 250mA of available power. In this demo, I'm using a Rowin Mini, which is about as cheap as you can get, and provides eight isolated leads with 300mA each (this one: amzn.to/49RvSPs). One of the main issues with buzz like that can be the line noise in the building itself. Proper grounding and power balancing is essential to reduce line noise. You might also be looking at an issue with interference, so if you're close to a computer screen for example you could be picking up RF interference from that through the guitar's wiring.

My heavy menace won't run on 9v I plug in a 12v isolated connector and zero buzz it's silent
