Nice, there really is something about a real CRT that isn't captured on camera. I have the old family TV from like 1983 and it works just fine as old as it is.

Another very interesting video coming from this channel, congratulations! Here where I live, in Brazil, it is still quite common to see families with lower incomes use CRT TVs, and there is a certain devaluation in them. I bought a Magnavox brand TV (yes, the same as the odyssey, the first home console to be sold) and it was manufactured in the 2000s, I really like it because it's better to play old video games on CRT TVs than new TVs, since New TVs distort the analog signal a lot. The TV standard here in Brazil is Pal-M, and it is very similar to NTSC, the only difference is that it has 576i, but maintains a frequency of 60Hz. Sorry my English, I used a translator to make this comment

Many many many years ago... One time I was messing around with a magnet on the family TV when everyone had gone to bed, just watching the weird patterns and colours blending. After that, panic set in. The screen was, to put it mildly, fu&*ed. Everything was distorted and weird rainbows all over. After what seemed like an eternity I figured out that waving the magnet all over the screen in different orientations may fix it. It actually worked. Still can not believe it!

when I was little I had a really obscure "Buxtron" brand 14" CRT at my home, and an old Sony CRT at my grandma's house. I still have the Sony there but unfortunately it doesn't longer work. I now live in a different town for most of the year where I have a dying LG LCD TV and I hope to get another CRT because their image is infinitely better Also in the country I live you can find these CRTs everywhere, often for as low as around $5 when converted from local currency. Retro gaming boomers like to jack up prices of CRTs whenever they can, so no surprise one can get massively ripped off on eBay for paying $100 on something that was likely found at the dump, or bought at a thrift store for $10 and then sold to you for ten times the price. Also I feel sorry for those few people who paid like $300 for a Sony PVM when all European TVs come equipped with RF, Composite, SVideo and even RGB and component, in the form of a SCART jack and can be found thrown into the curb and still working

I mainly use a CRT for watching my VHS collection on these days, I’ve found they’re the best way of doing so. of course I have a digital set top box hocked up to a crappy vcr dvd combo (which I only have as a backup incase my good VCR fails) that transmits to the TV Via the RF output. Meaning I have a fully working analogue TV Setup that’s as future proof as I can get and close to actual Analogue TV as possible. (Well I could get closer but i don’t really need to). It also goes to show people that old analogue TVs aren’t really obsolete yet, there are still ways to make them compatible with modern TV Transmissions and other modern equipment.

Sorry I’m late but ENJOY UR REAL CRT! Also Simon, ur analog signal gave me some nostalgic ATV channels cuz before 2022 we had a Analog TV Signal that was pretty cool to see the analog quality but when December 2022 hit… they shutdown the rest of the channels due to analog tv due to other areas wasn’t watching ATV so yeah. Thx Simon For Making Me Remember The Good Old Days of Analog TV (btw I’m in Canada)

@@SimonVideoNp! and actually I wish I could do a ATV transmitter but due to the CRTC rules, I need a license that can be expensive then a Car! (between 12,000 to 70,000 $CAD I think) If I don’t have a license then the CRTC is at my door. EDIT:I'm reading the crtc rules so I can understand more but yeah imma see if I can do it in my area (Canada)

You should build a a digital ntsc modulator using gnu radio and a red pitaya. There’s probably a pre built one out there.
@hwjebwlsndqgajsbsksnd
@hwjebwlsndqgajsbsksnd 10 месяцев назад
Also if you want to I can design a schematic for an amplifier to make a further range station. That modulator that you have is probably around -10dbm which is barely anything (100 microwatts XD) so you could think about getting a high gain broadband buffer amplifier to bring up the power a bit. Just be sure not to plug the coax back into the tv. Oh and if you want even more tandem consider building an antenna that is resonant for your frequency “range” as ntsc is astonishingly wide bandwidth. The formula for a dipole is (frequency[mhz]/300)/2) then take that length split it in half again and solder one end to the shield of your coax and solder the center conductor to the other wire and run it out in a “T” formation with the coax driving the center. That should increase your range decently.
@hwjebwlsndqgajsbsksnd
@hwjebwlsndqgajsbsksnd 10 месяцев назад
Sorry another tangent but 3 years back freshman year of high school me and a friend built a big 500w transmitter and transmitted on the low end of the vhf spectrum like channel 1 and we specifically timed it so that it corresponded with a sporadic E layer ionospheric opening (which happens a bunch in the spring and winter) and we sent a tv signal all the way from Washington to California. 😂
@SimonVideo
@SimonVideo 9 месяцев назад
I haven't heard of the red pitaya before, thank you for bringing it to my attention! That amplifier would be cool, and thanks for the tip with the antenna. I'm not all to familiar with RF stuff, so I appreciate it. Also WHAT.. 500 watts is crazy! How did it get that much range though... was that 500w ERP?

Yeah, putting magnets up to the screen isn't a great idea - it can "permanently" leave some distortion on the screen that may require degaussing to correct (I know a lot of CRTs came with a degaussing wire built in and I think they would run at start up, but I have no idea if that is enough to correct it). On a related note, apparently if you take a CRT far from its intendid market, you will notice some artifacts resembling what you get whej playing with magnets: I remember hearing that these TVs would in some way be adjusted to compensate for earths magnetic field in the area they were being sold in (I'm not sure, but I suspect such "adjusting" might just amount to more degaussing). I get a kick out of your enthusiasm for this tech (to be sure, it is a really cool technology) - its interesting how one generation can appreciate a particular technology in ways that those who grew up with it generallu do not (for me, I have a quirky appreciation for earlier computer tech - with a special fondness right now for monochrome serial terminals: granted, I did use monochrome displays in elementary school, but I hated them then, but now that they are largely gone... I've grown a certain fondness for them). Mind you, I am developing a bit of a hankering for a CRT like what I grew up using (though one even more analogue in its controls and with more faux wood paneling). If you ever delve into the history of computing, there are a lot of cool and wild technologies that came and went over the years (one of my favorites being core memory - little magnetic toroids woven into strands of copper wire that could be used as RAM by magnetizing and demagnetizing them).
@SimonVideo
@SimonVideo 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, probably wasn't the best idea with the magnet. Funny, I was literally just looking into serial terminals the other day 😂 That core memory thing is really interesting, thanks for sharing. I'll have to look into that more
