Y'all have been waiting for this video since you saw this car in my driveway during the summer. It is the first year of the Volvo 240 and a manual 4-speed wagon at that! It was parked for a bad freeze plug in-or-around 2001-2003.
With only 73,000 miles, this 245 has endured decades of sun and weather damage, but the paint and body held up pretty good! I haven't found a spot of rust on the car, which is great considering New Mexico has four seasons and lots of tree leaves...

I had a 245 exactly like this , I found it during spring clean up underneath a pile of tree trimmings. Paid $200 bucks for it, replaced the cracked aluminum bell housing and motor mounts, sanded and painted the scorched roof with white floor paint and a foam roller, cleaned it up inside and out drove it to Canada from Colorado and back and sold it to a college girl but that was only a part of it's story. The original owner fatally injured a pedestrian in it and abandoned it to a mechanic friend of mine's storage yard. He sold it to another fellow who used it to haul trailer loads of materials to build a cabin in the San Juan's near Silverton. Then I bought it from him when it had served his purposes in about 2000. I owned it maybe a year and got a 1995 850 that was a similar green. My ex-wife couldn't drive the 245 worth a shit because Volvo had over powered the power steering in this model. They changed the geometry of the front to correct the issue later but if you drive with one hand in your purse, the other hand on the wheel and your head up your ass it was pretty dangerous.

Love the old 245 look. The front, the mirrors, the tailgate. Also really like that it has more chrome than plastic. Don't get me wrong, wouldn't trade my '86, but this one is The prettiest model. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it!

I used to have a 1980 mustard yellow Volvo 245 DL B21F=Fuel Injection. B21A=Carburator. B21F Borg and Werner M46 4 speed manual with O/D 258K miles, same color chocolate brown leather interior. Bought it for $300 from my dad and sold it for $6700. My Volvo was almost in perfect shape except the interior I had to replace it.

I had a 1973 145 . With the 20B engine. Indestructible. Had twin stromberg carbs. and manual floor change. . Did 400,000 mls when I sold it. Still going strong. I had whilst bringing up the kids, no better car. seven seats. It would lift up her skirts at 60 mph and take off. Cost me new $ 5000. Sold for $2500 after 14 years

This car brings back a pile of sentimental memories. When I was in grade 8, my grandfather and I visited a friend , an old farmer. He had vw rabbit diesels and Volvo’s all over the place. I spent an afternoon sitting in and fiddling with a 75 wagon , same color as this. The old fellow gave me the car , to fiddle with at our own farm. The car was very rusty and never got back on the road but taught me so much about driving , under the hood etc at a young age. I still have that owners manual. I loved that car. I did have a 84 240 Diesel I drove in high school , that’s another story lol. 💙 I’m glad you are so passionate for these special cars.

A lovely old car. I can't wait to see it brought back to rights. The 2 litre Red Block survived well into the 80s if not the 90s in other markets. I learned to drive stick on a 1972 144S that had some 250,000 miles on the clutch. It was this same colour combination. Old Betsy was a faithful old girl, and that is what helped my Mom to buy our first Volvo in 1981. Guinevere was an 81 DL wagon with the 2.1 with single side draught Zenith carburetor and 3 speed Borg-Warner 3 speed automatic. A faithful steed. I'm now driving the second 240DL wagon Ma bought in 1990. Just coming up on 400,000 miles. Arthur seems eternal.

As a Volvo dealer tech back in the day, the '73, 74, and 75 B20F engines with the CIS fuel system were a nightmare for us. From dislodged piston-pin clips to flooded crankcases and washed-down cylinder walls, this engines were our headaches. CIS was not exactly a beneficial change. Give me the old D-Jetronic.

Nice to watch a Volvo enthusiasts in USA. No need to guess about the second survivor : The hand brake between the drivers seat and the door and the steering wheel tell me that it is an Amazon. My dad owned a four door 1965 Amazon in the 1960'es -- The many 'snakes' (rubber tubes) in the 240's engine room was not present in the Scandinavian versions I have come across. It is probably due to special, US-requirements like power steering.... -- The rear lights really indicate that this 245 is an early model: They are similar to those used on the 145 model... I've been a keen Volvo owner since 1986: 240 Van 1982 240 Estate 1988 940T Estate 1999 850 1992 850T 1997 Current cars: V70T 2007 S60T 2005 Thus, I wish you the best. Nice to know that you will take care of this old girl from Göteborg in Sweden. /JD

Such a cool car, pretty much all the older Volvos here near the Illinois Wisconsin border have all been grabbed and saved (unless it's too far gone from the rust). If it was me I'd be so very torn between keeping the patina and shine it up or re-paint it. At least I got my foot in the door with my 04 V40 that I saved and rebuilt from copart for my "keep me sane 2020 quarantine project" the previous owner hit a lane dividing curb cracked the oil pan n continued to drive till it locked it up, after getting a same year V40 that was t-boned in downtown Chicago and did a engine swap I now have one of the best sorted Wagons I think I've ever had. Sorry on rambling lol absolutely love the video and instantly subscribed👍

I remembered learning how to drive in one of these. No power steering so you had to be strong 😂 A couple of things is different from the Swedish version; we didn’t have a roof rack, instead we had 2 bars going from one side to another. The spare wheel was under the carpet in the luggage compartment, not on the side like you have. Take some detailed video of the inside, would be fun to see. Glad to see it’s a manual also. Hope you restore it!

She has the big, square headlights, and the rear side indicators that were only on the “american” models. Mine was imported from Sweden to the Netherlands by her previous owner. It is my dream car. Together with my dad, we are doing literally everything. Bodywork and welding is almost done. And someone please save that amazon😊. That’s a beauty as well.... My dad has the wagon version for over 40 years now. Also the V70, had a 480 too.... I drove/drive them all now and then, and all are great. But not as great as the infamous 245 bricks......😊😊😊

LOTS of years ago, very early 80's I was at a dealers looking at their cars and they had a bright green #118 245 with brown vinyl and in your face orange upholstery with stripes down the centre. Wouldn't have been a B20 as we didn't get that 1 year model in the UK. Although I'd previously had a B16 Amazon previously, I chose a 1977 Mk I VW Sirocco instead. Had a 240 much more recently and now have a 2000 P1 V70 to go with my Dark Blue 1967 Amazon Wagon. What colour is this one? Shenandoah Green? That colour came up when Googling. I've never heard of it before.

Hello! This is color 110, Cypress Green. I believe 1975 is the only year with that color on the 240DLs and I’ve seen it only on the 140 cars prior. It’s the evolution of 94 Dark Green, which is Ivy’s original shade of green under the hood and in the door jambs. Actually today at a Volvo Cruise and luncheon we ran across a local 242 in #118 and it was just beautiful. Also known as Berkshire Green, used in the late year 164s!

I had a 1967 Jeep Wagoneer with the same exact roof rack as on that 240. I looked up photos to confirm and yes, same design. And I see online that it's on some early 70s Wagoneers as well. Do you know if that's an original rack on the Volvo?

had 5 Volvos, 2 x145 a 245 DL with a LPG conversion and 2 X 244 both with LPG conversions. Not one of them did under 300000 miles. Great cars, apart from some areas prone to rust, the steering racks are the weakest point. Would not have a modern Volvo, would def go back and get a 2 series or an older Saab 900. My 77 244 was that colour and brown interior. Good luck with the restoration.

David, David, David, I'm starting to think there is a little masochist in you. But it does look like an interesting model. OMG. It looks like as much work as Ivy. Don't go near that Benz. You're right, the cost of restoration is higher. I fancy the 280CE W123, but I know it would be more work, money energy etc than a Volvo. You must really love these cars. You are remarkable. I used to have a '75 Volvo 242 many years ago. Very reliable, but a little under powered. Mine had a B20A engine with a manual 4 + OD transmission. I sold it at 270,000km, because they changed the rules for safety and emission inspection where I live. It became to annoying and expensive to daily drive an old car.
