RDR2 really is an incredible game, I completed it when it first came out and have just started continuing my unfinished second playthrough. I also wrote a couple of blog posts a while ago on things the game really ought to tell you about mechanics and so forth but doesn't explain very well, happy to point you to them if they might be handy. You're on rails right now. Once you're out of the mountains and make camp, the whole world (mostly) opens up and you can go anywhere, explore to your heart's content.
