"Kamen" (仮面) literally means "mask" in English, so both "kamen rider" and "masked rider" are correct translations. The official English title was "Masked Rider" until 2010. From Kamen Rider W they started using the original Japanese pronunciation as the official English title.
Has anyone ever tell you that super Sentai and Kamen rider does crossover? Often times it's done in a movie, but on rare occasion it's on a canon episode of a certain series.
0:20 The original Showa Era, which began with the og Kamen Rider on April 3, 1971, and ended on September 24, 1989, with Kamen Rider Black RX. 1:14 Gradually over decades. 17:09 Start of Heisei Era Phase 1, which started on January 30, 2000, with Kamen Rider Kuuga and ended on August 30, 2009, with Kamen Rider Decade. 33:39 Start of Heisei Era Phase 2, which started on September 6, 2009, with Kamen Rider W and ended on August 25, 2019, with Kamen Rider Zi-O. 48:08 And now the start of the current Reiwa Era, which began September 1, 2019, with Kamen Rider Zero-One. The current series, Kamen Rider Gotchard, is scheduled to end soon on August 25, 2024, with the next series, Kamen Rider Gavv, scheduled to air on September 1, 2024. 49:33 Kamen Rider Saber is the first KR series I watched from beginning to end.
For those of you guys that didn’t know, just throwing it out there, that Kamen rider ryuki opening was sang by Rica Matsumoto, aka the VA of Ash from Pokémon.
@@adaraka345 ok relax the reason why saber was made because it was the pandemic and they want to cheer things up so don’t blame the show blame the creators who made it
I once dislocated my shoulder, and I just sing the part of kuuga's opening "no fear no pain" and it suddenly goes back to normal. But I got weak after that
In case you're wondering, here are all the main riders' names. @@Zeppeli11.618 ZX (Pronounced Zee-Cross) was introduced in the 10 Rider Special. It was an attempt to get a series off the ground for him, but it didn't take. Then 3 years later, we got Black and Black RX (Same character, RX was a sequel series) and then the franchise went off air for about 10 years, during which we got Shin, J and ZO as specials. Once we hit Kuuga, the series hasn't missed a year.
Fun fact: The one who sing kamen rider drive is actually the same actor who act as kamen rider eternal in w. In the end of the music video, You can see "A Blue flare turn into a Red Driving!" Which represents Mitsuru act
The story is lighter and easier to understand than the complex and heavy early heisei phase, That's what's liked by 250 million years old parents like you
Your guess was correct! Ryuki does indeed translate to "dragon" so Kamen Rider Ryuki is "Masked Rider Dragon." The anime, Fuuto PI, is a direct sequel to Kamen Rider W, so it's recommended to watch KR W first.
Also, fun fact, well one, you were sorta right with Ryuki since it’s basically a translation of dragon, and knight, hence the last one being called Dragon Knight, the only other rider series to be adapted
Instrumental openings are sooooo underrated! Hibiki’s first intro rocked by using its instrumental weapons influencing its opening. I’m just a sucker for instrumentals 🤷♂️
@@Zeppeli11.618 People only bashed Gotchard at first because they had high standards after Geats. Gotchard generally became better received when it started doing two part arcs.
That Saban's Masked Rider is ass BUT KAMEN RIDER DRAGON KNIGHT IS REALLY GOOD ACTUALLY. IN FACT JAPAN LOVED IT SO MUCH IT GOT AN ORIGINAL JAPANESE OPENING & A JAPANESE EXCLUSIVE SEQUEL NOVEL.
Regarding props and merch. There are a lot of really high quality toys (Bandai Japan puts Bandai America to shame). There are only a few gimmicks, belts and weapons that don't have toys. Most do.
Fun fact: The singer who sung "Be the One" the theme for Kamen Rider Build is fluent in English and has an English version of the song on her own RU-vid channel. Her name is Beverly. No last name.
This isn't really true. At all. Japanese doesn't really have the same concept of cursing as English does. It does have words that could be translated as curses, or as more child friendly word, and fan translator often translate them as such, but in Japan, they aren't considered that at all and are child-friendly word. There are some words considered non-child friendly and those are not used, or even legal It think.
The series is divided into Eras The Showa Era was its start, with the crew figuring out exactly what they wanted the show to be as they went along. Some filmmakers like James Gunn admire the originals because of their stories and underdog status at first, this was a show with a fraction of Ultraman’s budget because the network didn’t believe it would last and now 50+ years later it’s a multi billion yen franchise! Showa is very classic with cheesy sci-fi action and was only hampered by the ‘74 oil crisis and tough competition from anime, which was reaching a new level of quality and action with the rise of the Super Robot genre. This resulted in a stop and go pattern after Stronger with it being replaced by Super Sentai. It happened again after Super-1 did not wow crowds, so it was replaced by the Metal Heroes starting with Gavan. ZX was floated around in radio dramas, manga and a TV special but no interest was given for a full show. At the peak of Japan’s economic boom in the mid-80s, Toei tried again and created the beloved Kamen Rider Black in ‘87, followed by RX. Ishinomori got bored with his creation and wanted to do other things, so the TV series went dormant for 11 years. Three movies came and went that kept the brand alive and sadly Shotaro passed away from a heart attack in ‘98 just as he was planning a revival for Kamen Rider to ring in the new millennium.
Heisei is divided into two; Phase 1 was an effort to find out how to make Kamen Rider appealing in the 21st century. Initially, Toei was just going to make Kuuga out of respect to the final wishes of its creator and end it there, but then 9-11 happened and the producers, seeing how scared everyone was, decided that the world needed heroes to comfort them in dark times and kept the series going. Since Bandai was a sponsor, new innovations came to sell more toys. Despite this, writers treated the series as a superhero J-drama with darker elements as it was the style of the era especially in Hollywood with their comic superhero movies. Phase 2 saw the show go back to basics while upping the ante for toy gimmicks. Due to a financial debacle from a failed licensing spinoff, Ishinomori’s company became partly controlled by Bandai in earlier in 2007, which meant more toys had to be made to keep the brand profitable for the toy maker. It embraced being fun and a bit silly again and not apologizing for it while keeping some drama. Once the Emperor of Japan was too old and unable to perform his ceremonial duties in 2019, he abdicated his throne to his son and a new era dawned.
Reiwa (2019-present) was off to a rocky start thanks to the pandemic, with Zero-One being delayed midway in the show to go on a one month hiatus so proper safety protocols could be implemented after the Red Ranger actor of Kiramager contracted the illness. Rather than be stuck with an empty lot, Toei pooled its cash to get new technologies that Disney’s The Mandalorian utilized for its production to create digital environments to make Saber. The 50th anniversary was celebrated with a three year long jubilee, which made special projects for the occasion including a modern remake film of the original Rider. Geats amazed the audience and Gotchard quickly disappoints soon after. On the horizon is an alien gummy man and his chocolate armored ally, coming out in two weeks!
Here my recomendation : 1.) Gaim 2.) Ryuki 3.) Blade 4.) Geats 5.) Kabuto 6.) Faiz 7.) Drive 8.) Fourze 9.) W 10.) Build 11.) Decade (need to watch at least 1st 9 heisei season since this an anniversary theme) 12.) Zio (need to watch at least 9 2nd heisei season since this also anniversary theme after Decade). For mature theme : 1. The First The Next Duo Films. 2. Amazons trilogy 3. Black Sun
35:55 There was the Imajin Anime, which was basically just some shorts featuring some comic relief characters. And in the 80s there was SD Kamen Rider, which was a comedic series featuring chibi versions of the Showa Era Riders. There are plenty of Manga though. I'd recommend Kamen Rider Spirits which is basically a massive crossover featuring all the Showa Era Riders and it's still going. It has a really awesome pseudo-rider called Taki Rider.
Fun fact, the Imagin anime was the second time KR and Ultraman had a crossover as Ultraman Taro did appear in the anime (voiced by his official VA), the joke being that he was the fifth Taros
Trust me, this is the start of an incredible journey, following the stories of these bike riding fighters, a story between a constant struggle of good and evil, right and wrong
OK, quick bits of trivia for a lot of seasons: Kamen Rider Super-1: We're probably never going to even hear about his actor again. Shunsuke Takasugi got into a lot of legal bother around 2013 (he'd been caught scamming people to the tune of 50 million yen overall, roughly $450k equivalent) and as of 2017, the man's a fugitive who's managed to disappear. Kamen Rider Den-O: The four monsters that were singing the song in the second version of the opening are collectively known as the Taros (all their names end in -taros) and are the means by which Den-O gets his various base forms... usually by possessing the main character. Those four people walking around the room each with a coloured streak in their hair? The various possession looks, meaning those looks are all the same actor. Den-O was also so popular that while most Riders have 1 or 2 movies featuring them, Den-O's cast has about 10 movies where they have major roles (three of which are compiled together as the 'Cho-Den-O Trilogy') Kamen Rider Kiva: They formed an in-house band for this season: Tetra Fang. All of the vocal songs for this season are done by this band. Kamen Rider Decade: At 31 episodes, it's the shortest season of Kamen Rider since it returned with Kuuga. Only Amazon has a shorter run (24 episodes). Kamen Rider W: From this point on, the style shifts a bit. Main difference is that we actually have clear villains at the start... although whether they stay as the main villains is heavily dependent on the season. From Kuuga to Decade, we typically had the threat established at the start, but there was frequently not a 'face' for them until the later parts of a season. From W onwards, we typically have a villain in place at any time. Kamen Rider OOO: This season featured the 1000th episode of Kamen Rider. They took two episodes to celebrate it and the monster was a tribute to the Showa era. Kamen Rider Fourze: The female lead was ultimately revealed to be part of a cult. Not the character, the actress is part of the Happy Science cult and was raised in their environment. Kamen Rider Wizard: Thanks to the last two episodes being a special that aired in the show's normal timeslot, Wizard is considered the longest Heisei era show at 53 episodes. If you don't count those two, then it matches Agito at 51. Kamen Rider Gaim: If you enjoy Fate/Zero, Madoka Magica and/or the first season of Psycho Pass? Check this one out, it's the same head writer, Gen Urobuchi. Kamen Rider Drive: Because of the main rider's collectible gimmick being car-themed, this is the only season where the toys tributing previous seasons are themed primarily for the secondary rider's gear, since his is Bike themed. Kamen Rider Ghost: This series has a defined time-frame throughout the story, being around six months, thanks to dealing with two 99-day countdowns. The first of these was also mostly handled in real time, unless an episode was a multi-parter. Kamen Rider Ex-Aid: At 45 episodes, this is the second shortest Heisei era season, behind Decade. This is because Wizard debuted in September 2012 and Gaim was October 2013. Drive, Ghost and Ex-Aid were all October starts, and with Build, it's back to September. Kamen Rider Zi-O: This is a somewhat-sequel to Decade. Decade is a prominent fixture in the series, albeit a recurring cast member. Kamen Rider Zero-One: This season got affected by the Pandemic, losing about 5 weeks worth of time and resulting in numerous rewrites. It also meant that the summer movie got pushed to winter, meaning Zero-One didn't get a crossover movie with Kamen Rider Saber. Kamen Rider Saber: This is the first season in over a decade to feature an end credits sequence. Kamen Rider Revice: 50th anniversary of the franchise, so all of Revi and Vice's forms have some design references to previous riders, such as the look for their Eagle Form being themed after Kamen Rider W or their Mammoth form referencing Den-O. Kamen Rider Geats: Due to the format of the show, this season has the most named riders in the franchise. The vast majority are known solely through name cameos though. Kamen Rider Gotchard: This is the first season where Eitoku, the suit actor known for playing the secondary riders, took the lead role. Tjhey made a big point of this. He would not retain this position for the next and current season, Gavv.
My favorite OPS are ex aid, build, w, zi o, kiva, revice and geats. They are just so good Oh yeah at 37:04 the hand is like that season's (ooo/os) monster's hand that got sliced years ago and now the monster is just a floating and talking sliced hand and the one who gave the main character's transformation device or driver Oh and also at 51:40 that was that season's (revice) main character with his "inner demon"
35:50 Fun fact about Kamen Rider W: Two People, One Suit. The main suit wearer is Shotaro Hidari (the one wearing the fedora) while Philip's (the one constantly holding a book) consciousness gets transported into the suit.
Just so u know next month on the 1st The new Kamen rider series Kamen Rider Gavv will be airing on tv in Japan 🇯🇵 and yes their are all ready trailers for it so u might wanna check it out I just hope you don’t get hungry for some candy 🍬

I don't know if anyone said this yet, but there is an official english version of Kamen Rider Build opening song. Also, it is possible to buy some of the belts, but I don't know if they have the transformation device you might want, but you could be lucky.
quick fun facts about some openings: -the first one were sang by the same main characters... until ZX (movie) -The Kamen Rider Kuuga op had an english version, called Masked Rider Kuuga, it only appears in the full music album collection -kamen rider blade is the first season to had 2 opening songs -Decade's op is sang by Gackt, one of the oldschool rockstars of japan, most of the ppl knew him because he was the lead singer of Malice Mizer. -Fourze op was made by Anna Tsuchiya, the same who made the NaNa opening and seiyuu. -Drive opening's singer was also a kamen rider back in W's season, he was a movie exclusive named Eternal, and it has the best suits of all time -build opening clip is a major spoiler, no one knew that until the final episodes.
The Kamen Rider anime, Kamen Rider Fuuto PI, is a direct sequel to Kamen Rider W, which incidentally is also one of the better introductory series to the genre, so I highly recommend starting with W, especially if you want to get to the anime.
So just to make sure you're aware, the anime op is there because Fuuto PI is a direct sequel to Kamen Rider W(Double) which came before it. The anime is based off a short run manga series that was the continuation, but came out a bunch of years after W originally aired, and only got one season so far so we might not get to see the full story.
so you know for a few good years in early 00 Kamen Rider always had a "Masked Rider" branding beneath it but it was stopped early 2010 because i guess it never sticked
In Kamen Rider there were 3 Eras; first being Showa era (Kamen Rider Ichigo to Kamen Rider Black RX) second being Heisei era (Kamen Rider Kuuga to Kamen Rider Zi-O) and lastly being Reiwa era [Kamen Rider Zero-One to the current Kamen Rider Gotchard. (I don't count Gavv yet)] Each season is unique to their show like Kuuga is an ancient warriror with ancient monsters, Kiva is a vampire fighting vampire monsters. Kamen Rider Decade and Kamen Rider Zi-O are special shows where Decade is the 10th Anniversary for Heisei and Zi-O being the 20th Anniversary, and in these shows we get to see other riders from previous shows appear. But of course both have a theme, but idk if telling would be a spoiler or not?
My first modern Rider series was Gaim, which is S Tier no question. Then I watched Den-O, OOO's, Faiz, Kiva, then Drive, Ex-Aid, Build, 01, Geats, and finishing Gotchard in the next few weeks before the new series starts. Older shows I watched were the original then Black and Black RX.
34:56 Indeed! kamen rider 2(pronounced double because japan loves puns) got an anime sequel based on a manga called fuuto tantei (fuuto detective(s)[japanese doesn't distinguish between singular and plural so this could also be word play]) or fuuto PI in english
Ok so the first 3 themes in the extra themes are for movies (Kamen Rider Shin Prologue which is NOT related to the Shin Kamen Rider Movie, Kamen Rider ZO, and Kamen Rider J). They are some of the only Kamen Rider media from the wilderness years of the 90s where there were no rider shows outside of the American adaptation of Masked Rider (which was made by the Power Rangers people). Kamen Rider Amazons is a two season with a movie modern reimagining of the showa era Kamen Rider Amazon that was made for Amazon Video and aired in Japan. It was available on Amazon Prime Video in North America for a while as Amazon Riders but not available there anymore. Prime Video does have Shin Kamen Rider and Kamen Rider Black Sun (similar situation to Amazons). One thing I love about this video is how not matter how different the songs are an how many styles they go through, you vibe to them all.
Kuuga was the first one I saw beginning to end on Tubi, that opening song and the horror element to it was what got me hooked, and the suit got cleaner as the season went on
idk if anyone commented it yet but fuuto pi is sadly the only anime so far but it is getting a movie soon, the anime is a direct sequel to kamen rider w and the movie seems to be half prequel to the series
21:47 you're half right, ryuki is derived from ryu meaning dragon and kishi meaning night, making his name dragon knight, which is how the american adaptation got it's name
You may or may not have noticed that the shows have veered away from motorcycles, to either sparsely using them or using CGI vehicles (like Ghost's lizard thing). That's because Japan has strict modded vehicle laws.
The Showa Era (1971-1994) was mostly cyborgs because creator Shotaro Ishinomori was fascinated by the concept, in fact one of the predecessors of this franchise is Cyborg 009, a superhero team that had several anime adaptations including one that aired on Cartoon Network. Skyrider was his name and he was initially part of a reboot. The creator has been speculated to have seen the Richard Donner Superman film and decided to make his next Kamen Rider be the first to have the ability to fly, but that was dropped midway in the series because Toei was horribly cheap which left Shotaro dissatisfied. With ratings dropping because of stiff competition against Super Robot anime, the writers decided to bring back the old Riders to help the current one, who dubbed him “Skyrider” and the writers abandoned the reboot idea in favor of keeping the old continuity going. Super-1 was the first to have a non-Japanese manufactured motorcycle for the hero vehicle, as the V-Machine was a Harley. It is still rare to see a hero bike that isn’t made by other countries, mostly because Suzuki was the main sponsor in the Showa era and Honda has been the main sponsor since Agito.
8:33 ok so, kamen rider got put on hiatus following stronger. In 1979 the decision was made to revive the show with what was originally intended to just be a reboot, titled "kamen Rider" (or occasionally in maketing "Shin Kamen Rider" which I am not going into that names complicated history). Originally the show had nothing to do with the past 5 seasons, but in the last 3rd of the run it was decided to tie the new show back into the old one, with most if not all of the previous main characters returning. Typically most people now refer to the 1979 season as "Skyrider", the name used to refer to the main rider of the season. 11:14 "I know he a snitch" Oh you dont Know... you dont know. 27:32 Hibiki is really good... for the first half. Second half is rough. be warned.
Somebody here probably mentioned about the eras already but just in case-- I havent touched upon Showa so I cant say much about that. But Heisei Phase/Part 1 is more focused on the drama aspect of the show while-- --Heisei Phase 2 is a subtle reset to cater towards future audiences by toning down the drama and raising the kid-friendly aspects. As shown by Kamen Rider W/Double as the first rider in Phase 2. Not to say that Heisei Phase 2 is any more boring, in fact it's fun to watch actually. Kamen Rider also has side series for their main counterpart which often focuses on secondary riders and so on (Kamen Rider Rogue from the Kamen Rider Build Series). Since it's not airing on mainstream TV in japan, they can actually slightly up the gore aspects a bit (As people know from Amazons, Black Sun(not sure about this), etc) Some Kamen Rider Series has movies inbeuded INTO the story like Den-O (Kamen Rider Den-O: I am Born!) So if a arc stops at one episode without a resolution in the next episode, it's most likely in a movie or so Edit: While I personally enjoy Kamen Rider Decade, as a meme and some parts of the story. Kamen Rider Decade's story will be somewhat confusing to understand due to the fact that it ended early because Kamen Rider W/Double was being produced at the same time.
All the main Rider names in order. And each is numbered in tradition with the first two being named Number 1 and Number 2 Ichigo (#1) Nigo(#2) V3(#3) Riderman (#4) X(#5) Amazon(#6) Stronger(#7) Skyrider(#8) Super-1(#9) ZX(#10) Black/Black RX(#11/#12) Shin(#13) J(#14) ZO(#15) Kuuga(#16) Agito(#17) Ryuki(#18) Faiz(#19) Blade(#20) Hibiki(#21) Kabuto(#22) Den-O(#23) Kiva(#24) Decade(#25) W(said as Double)(#26) With its sequel anime Fuuto Pi OOO(Said like Cherri Os)(#27) Fourze(a pun on40 as its the 40th anniversary)(#28) Wizard(#29) Gaim(#30) Drive(#31) Ghost(#32) Ex-Aid(#33) Build(#34) Zi-O(#35) Zero-One(#36) Saber(#37) Revice(#38) Geats(#39) Gotchard(#40)
So that show that was just called Kamen Rider at around 8:22 was a soft reboot after a 4 year hiatus. And he was later dubbed Sky Rider for his power to fly
You should watch the upcoming season that starts in September, Kamen Rider Gavv. it's snack-themed; his main suit is based on gummy candy, he uses a potato chip sword and his other forms include a chocolate cowboy, lollipop mech suit, and a marshmallow muscle suit. plus there's a second rider themed around chocolate with a gun that looks like a partially unwrapped candy bar. its gonna be fuckin WEIRD
My favourite kamen riders are Kamen rider ghost, ex-aid, build, zi-o, Saber, and Revice, and Geats. Im just waiting for the new kamen rider gavv to air on September
Revice had me hooked because of that intro. If youre looking for a series to jump into for a full watch, if say kuuga, kabuto, hibki, kiva, zero1, revice, and geats are my go to's. Havent touch gotchard or saber yet.
