I finally started using a mono astrophotography camera

In this video I'll be using a new mono astrophotography camera and a duo-narrowband filter to capture the Cone Nebula.
The Altair Hypercam 183M is a monochrome astronomy camera with a 20MP Sony sensor. So far, I am very impressed with the data this affordable un-cooled CMOS camera has produced.
Full Post:
astrobackyard....
I will be sure to publish a full review of this astrophotography camera in the coming months, as I have more time with it under the stars.
In the video, I also set up a second astrophotography rig to capture some wide-field views of the Orion Nebula using my DSLR while I still can. The telescope used for the Orion shot is the Meade 70mm Quadruplet Astrograph, which I reviewed in late 2017:

I use to gaze up as a kid me and my dad, got out of it ( life happened)! I'm 43 now , and found your channel and my wife notice me watching and saw how interested I was and for our anniversary she got me a Celeste on Astro master 130 eq , nothing extravagant just basic. But I find myself upset when there are no clear skies. Thanks for the inspiration! Found an old (NEW) hobby! I see Astro photography in the future!

The reason your channel is so successful? Because you are down to earth, and an excellent presenter. Plus you're Canadian. Canadian's are always cool lol

"Just a dude in his backyard" uhuh... But sharing your hobby\obsession with so much enthusiasm and humbleness. You sir are an inspiration to a lot of people for a reason. Because you love doing what you do. I'm getting into astrophotography myself. And you made the difference. I was always fascinated since my childhood, but always thought this hobby to be way to complex and costly. Getting older gives me a different perspective on challenges. But your way to "teach" has me hooked. Jah! Coolest flippin hobby in the world. 😛

Dude you rock. I am totally inspired to get out and get back into an old hobby. I was 17 in 1978 and worked summer jobs to be able to buy my celestron c8. I dabbled in astrophotography back when hypersensitised film was required for long exposures. No stacking My best photo was shot in 1997 when the Hale Bopp comet came through. I piggybacked a canon A1 with a 90mm on the c8 guided 8 minute photo turned out great. Looking to squezze in m42 before it is gone. M31 and galaxy season are a definite plan this year. Cheers

Hi mate, I also found your channel and I find it to be very educational. I am starting astrophotography in my later years and you come through in your vids to be passionate young man and love doing what you do. When you paused to towards the end to thank your subscribers with a little bit of emotion is what done it for me. I have subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great work and a big hello from Australia.

I too was very touched by Trevor's emotion at end of video when he was reflecting on his 16k+ subscribers. It was a beautiful moment, and that is what makes the difference for me, when a person is so true to their feelings and sincere. Seems to be an increasingly rare quality with people these days... I live up in Ball Ground and there are a lot of places where there is very little light pollution. Last week I got an some really awesome pics of the Orion Nebula. Milky Way and just random constellations. All I have are kit lenses and Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens and a Canon T3 as well as a Canon XTi. I finally got a couple wireless shutter remote setups so I don,t have to use the camera timer. I really want a 14mm wide angle as well as a 24mm 1.4 lens. I have a question what is a good affordable star tracker setup that I could use just for my Canon T3? My settings have been setting the FE lens to infinity with an iso of 1600, tungsten AWB, with a 30sec and BULB with wireless trigger exposures.

@@ventravoo12 Hi James. I used to live in Dawson County and wow do I miss the beauty of No. Georgia! I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on an iOptron Sky Guider Pro tracking setup. As far as I can tell it's one of the most cost efficient ways to point a camera at the night skies and get some solid long exposures. Enjoy that gorgeous No. Georgia night sky!!

Not a bad way to jump into narrowband imaging with a mono camera, Trevor! I have an older SBIG mono with LRGB/HaSO filters. I've used it a few times and it's blown me away each time. I wish I had better narroband filters. I live in the heart of white zone country - and my "Budget" narrow band filters just can't block all the sky glow.

March 6, 2018 Trevor, I've been enjoying your astrophotography videos for about six +/- months now... WOW! all the hardships you endure. I was happy to hear that you purchased an iOptron Photron™ 6" Ritchey-Chrétien Telescope. In December I purchased a GSO 6" Ritchey-Chrétien OTA (and a BRESSER Exos-2 German Equatorial Mount Tripod) in order to - hopefully - get into more serious astrophotography... now that I have a decent DSLR camera; so I'll be watching closely the videos that you make with this new purchase of yours. Collimating my RC has proved to be an obstacle (good hardware for accurate collimating is beyond my budget presently) so I'll be interested in how you might address this issue if it comes up in your case. Thanks for all the sharing. Wishing you the best. Bill Lathrop North Central Florida

I don't know how much you're willing to spend, but look up the sigma SD1 Merrill. The camera is about 6 years old now and the price is around $2,000 ($10,000 when it first launched, and for good reason.) It houses a Foveon sensor, basically its layered like film. Instead of the bayer layout, it has 3 individual layers of RGB. So you're getting true depth and true color. Foveon is 100% Red, 100% Green, and 100% Blue. Instead of bayers 25% Red, 50% Green, and 25% Blue. I found out about this sensor because I opened up a thread regarding why digital can't be emulated accurately to look and feel like film. The highlight roll off, dynamic range, and tonal gradation can't be emulated. I've made some advances to a more natural and realistically acting film grain emulation, though. But the Foveon sensor looks promising for emulation, and I can see it suiting your needs for better and more accurate color reproduction. Sigma holds the patent on the Foveon sensor, so who knows how long it will take for it to spread into the mass market. Shame really, so much potential in digital sensor development.

Good episode Trevor. I agree that the processing time is longer on mono + filter combination however much of this is the repetitive nature of having to process each stack separately, The pay off however is a deeper, more detailed image in my experience. For example, only 30 mins of Ha will still look spectacular (and that is even before you spend time other than stretching). Everything is a trade off - however, I do like the simplicity of my DSLR on an old 80ED refractor every now and again :)

Nice video. A few comments: 1. How did they design such a nice RC scope with such a terrible dust cap? It happens to my 8" all the time as well. It's so aggravating! 2. Going forward: Please put your counterweights on before your scope! I've seen clutches unexpectedly fail before. 3. In general, it doesn't make much sense to use that dual narrowband filter on a monochrome camera since you won't be able to separate the Ha from the OIII. For the Cone Nebula, it actually won't make a difference since there is no OIII signal, however, it won't work on something like the Veil unless you're trying to make a luminance layer. Anyways, keep up the good work and clear skies!

I totally agree with you Trevor, you like me are probably dealing with so much cloud that you would feel lucky to capture a 3 hour run on full RGB colour never mind chance taking a gamble on tripling that time to capture each colour... not everyone is lucky to have clear skies are they do further south..

I haven't begun using a mono camera yet but I understand from reading that mono users produce four or more images (light, Ha, SII, OIII, etc), introduce the filtered colour into the appropriate image during editing and then combine the images with each colour and the lights captured. Of course the process will be slightly different when using the filter you mentioned in this video. Does using the filter that captures two narrow band colors at the same time complicate the editing process?

Hi Trevor, I know you're a busy guy, but if you could find the time, I'd ask for your thoughts. I am interested in knowing how this STC DUO filter performs on a one shot color camera, and what types of targets this will be suited for. ie, obviously emission nebula, but what others, and what would be its use, if any, for shooting galaxies? Second question/subject. I was looking at the wavelengths of this filter vs the wavelenvgths of the OPT Triad Tri-Band filter. The sectra look very very similar. I'd be very interested in seeing the SCT filter in use for one shot color. Thanks sir. Hope to hear back.

Have you tried color filters over the front apature in primary colors of red, blue and green with the monochrome camera? Color them in photoshop and combine with some normal monochrome and it will make a nice color image. 8 bit guy did one with an old CCTV camera. So could be worth looking into.
