This video is in partnership with Backcountry. 15% off any order with code SINTAX77 for viewers using their site here: go.magik.ly/ml...
I finally upgraded some of my winter backpacking gear essentials and made my picks from Backcountry's full inventory of outdoor gear. For detailed specs on the items I found most attractive, here are affiliate links for the three pieces of winter camping gear that I ultimately chose:
Marmot Eclipse Hardshell Jacket
go.magik.ly/ml...
Fjallraven Kajka 75 Backpack
go.magik.ly/ml...
Solomon Toundro Pro CSWP Boot
go.magik.ly/ml...
Other Backcountry gear seen and discussed:
Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe
go.magik.ly/ml...
Fjallraven Keb Backpack
go.magik.ly/ml...
Kahthoola Microspikes
go.magik.ly/ml...
1 Liter Nalgene
go.magik.ly/ml...
Black Diamond Z-Poles
go.magik.ly/ml...
MSR EVO Ascent Snow Shoes
go.magik.ly/ml...
Gregory Optic 48 Backpack (my 3-season pack seen in the summer clip)
go.magik.ly/ml...
Adidas Terrex Swift R2 GTX (My go-to 3-season trail runners)
go.magik.ly/ml...
FTC Disclosure: The links above are affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission for purchases made through these links, at no additional cost to you. Individual gear selections were made by me and all opinions are my own. Thank you to all of you out there for supporting the channel and making these future adventures possible :)
I’ll be posting a full length winter camping trip video using all of this gear and more up the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It was a pretty crazy trip with deep snow, icy mountain summits, high winds, snowshoeing, and yes, even a bunch of rain at one point. Despite the 16 degree temps the following day, I still managed to get dumped on pretty good for a while. I really seem to have a knack for attracting rain, even on a deep snow camping trip :) Stay Tuned!

Years ago I managed to close my car door on the zipper of my Marmot GoreTex shell. Goodbye zipper. So I sheepishly called Marmot, confessed my sin and asked if they could repair or replace the zipper. Not only did they say yes, they said FREE. And two weeks later they called me to say they had inspected the GoreTex layer, found it was delaminating, and wanted to replace the jacket--FREE. With anything similar from their product line. REALLY NICE PEOPLE TO DEAL WITH!

I envy the American service culture. Here in the UK they rip you off for every single penny. Yes, they sure know how to take the piss so it's nice to hear from people who have had a better experience (it restores my faith in human nature.)
@lyfandeth
@lyfandeth 3 года назад
@@oleggorky906 Marmot's service was way beyond the typical service culture. We have all too few companies who reslize that making the customer happy is better cheaper advertiding, and a better profit-maker for their company, than the couple of bucks they could save by saying "not our problem".

Sage advice on not overloading smaller backpacks. When you have to carry heavy loads, use a load hauler with dual stays and a reinforced hip belt or a large external frame pack.

You think those are old school snow shoes?! What about the "tennis racquets" with strings instead of a solid deck? *That's* old school. And arguably better in wet sticky snow.

Syntax - Please don't take this as a slam but if you every come back to Colorado don't say you saw a Mar "MOT" when you actually see one or several above treeline in a boulder field. In Colorado, they are called Mar "mitts". Big rodent, squirrel type of critters. Enjoyed your video!

What's up brother! A little surprised you're still using the Kahtoolas. We hike in Maine and New Hampshire all winter long and are constantly finding pieces of those things everywhere. We swear by the Hillsounds as they have more aggressive spikes plus the velcro strap that goes over your boot to keep them from falling off. Looking forward to your new adventure.

I always enjoy your trips as well as learn something new each video. This old guy is stuck on Osprey 38L (summer) 65L (winter) due to comfort. I enjoy how they ride on my back. I have worked hard at updating my kit and I am happy. A hammock guy here, warbonnet blackbird XLC. I want to do the AT next year, and some week long hikes to prepare this year. Right now I am weighing the options (pun intended) on perhaps a tent. Dyneema sounds great, but at 57 not sure I'll deal well with heavy condensation. I was wondering your take on solo tents, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why choose 65L or 75L? Get the Sierra designs Flex Capacitor 60-75L, at 2lb 10oz, with a heavy duty suspension, albeit no panel opening. As a RU-vid influencer, they may let you do a gear test. Your snowshoes are great, there is no new tech in the Evo. The boots are probably warm on day one, but the insulation is difficult to dry. As moisture accumulates everyday, they will turn to two blocks of ice on a cold morning. Use VBL and keep boot opening wide at night. Better are boots with removable insulation that be dried by campfire. Other than clothes and sleeping system, an efficient saw is essential. Winter camping is fun. Looking forward to your winter camping videos.

I bought a new pack, REI Traverse, it packs a little weird for what I'm used to and enjoy. That being said, my back wasn't super hot and sweaty so that's good. I upgraded my sleeping bag to a zero degree Big Agnes bag, love it so far. Kept me warm down to single digits. Also just got a warmer Sea to Summit insulated sleeping pad. Very comfy and warm. I'd like a hardshell, never had one of those.

excited to see how the gear works out in the upcoming video. Judging by the clips shown in this video I'm pretty sure I know where you went. Full Loop or partial? or Traverse? The bridge at LW and what appears to be the "ridge" as we call it is a giveaway for those of us familiar with the terrain. I went as vague as possible in the comments not to give anything away ;)

Awesome video. My 3 upgrades have a little story behind them After my new year's trip I realized my stove needs to be upgraded. I've always been fine with a small twig stove that doubles as a wind screen and an alcohol stove. It was very cold and I drank most of my water while hiking, so I needed to boil a ton of water. Well this took so long I ran out of fuel my last morning on the trail. My breakfast was lukewarm at best. I also need a dedicated winter pack. Lastly I need some actually water proof boots. I use Neos with surplus wool liners most of winter but swap for trail runners when peak bagging. I need something in between.
