@leopardprints
@leopardprints Год назад
He treated the cast so badly. He coerced/ forced the female actress to bare her breasts. The young girl who was raped by the two main characters was only 14, and according to the director she didn't really understand what was going on. She was just a girl from a local village who had never even seen a camera before. So this young girl had two grown men with their pants down holding her down. I'm sure he intentionally wanted a girl who wouldn't understand to get a real reaction. Also the village extras were put in danger with them being inside the burning huts. So many laws had to have been broken. He sounds like an absolutely psychopath with zero morals.
@NyanCatHerder
@NyanCatHerder 11 месяцев назад
@@leopardprintsThe mistreatment of the indigenous people is what really gets me. This movie might be a little heavy handed about its "moral', but it's clear that the director understood that the native people were just normal human beings in a vulnerable position following centuries of abuse. That makes his decisions *worse* rather than better, though. He took full advantage of their social vulnerability and threw many of them into actual, physical danger despite understanding the evil involved. He was just an utterly horrendous person.
@leopardprints
@leopardprints 11 месяцев назад
@@NyanCatHerder I think there has been some misunderstanding about the 'point' the movie and director was trying to make. The line about 'who are the real savages' and portraying the journalists as the baddies, it's not some commentary on colonisation or racism. At the time, Deadato's movies (Cannibal Ferox etc) were being heavily censored and banned- for animal abuse, violence etc. He felt it was hypocritical that journalists could show real cruelty and suffering- like the Italian 'mondo' movies and also on the news. And yet his movies were getting banned. There was also controversy that journalists were staging scenes for the 'mondo' movies. So the movie is really a dig at journalists. This is why the main characters are seen to be staging and encouraging atrocities in Cannibal Holocaust (like the foetus scene, the fire etc) He gives zero shits about indigenous people. As shown in how he treated them and portrayed them in the movie.

I once went on a date with a guy, and during it I made an offhand reference to CH during a conversation. He looked at me and asked "have you seen that movie?" I tell him not in its entirety but I've seen scenes from it and know a lot about it just out of morbid curiosity. Turns out his dad is Perry Pirkanen, who was in the movie. He had been studying film in university and was casted by the director. It was his big film in acting and it traumatized him so much he gave up on acting entirely. He'd wanted to quit, but at the same time he was just a young student (I think only 19 or 20 when this was made?) and didn't want to look bad at his first ever acting gig. Weirdest coincidence in my life.

There is a Hong Kong movie about Japanese atrocities during World War Two called Men Behind the Sun. It depicts a prison camp where the Japanese do experiments on POWs and people they have kidnapped from nearby villages. Yet the message is completely lost because the director chose to include a scene where he throws a cat into a room full of hungry rats that look like they kill it (this part the director vehemently denies saying cat was just fine,) then they set the room on fire killing all the rats. To this day the director is pissed that everyone focuses on that scene instead of the message of the movie.

So I'd love to see you talk about Ghostwatch from 1992. It isn't a disturbing movie, the thing that made me think of it in relation to Cannibal Holocaust is that it is one of the few movies that people thought were real. Whereas people thought CH had actual human deaths in it, Ghostwatch managed to fool people because it was filmed and presented as a real ghost hunting documentary taking place live on air. Many people missed the text-only disclaimer that briefly played, that told them it was a pre-recorded movie. It was so immersive, and they did such a poor job of telling people it was fake, that many people (mostly kids, but also adults) freaked the fuck out thinking it was real, and the BBC hasn't aired it ever since because of the controversy. I love the movie reviews, and Ghostwatch is both a legitimately good scary movie, and has one of the craziest stories attached to its broadcast. Its a far smarter film than it first seems. CH is the opposite showing you in graphic detail 'shock' gore and animal suffering, but the world of the film itself was completely unconvincing, what disgust I felt was only with the films creators and their needless cruelty. I know some have defended it because of its message... apparently. I mean, really? 'Who were the real monsters?' cliched schlock that manages to be completely lacking in self awareness? As opposed to being eaten? 🤔 Sometimes I get the feeling that "animal" people think the "animal kingdom" is all rainbows and unicorns. Some predators are known to actively taunt and play with their prey.... I'm just kinda nauseated with it. It's so counter to reality. Like calling the planet we live on "Mother Earth". It's not a person, it doesn't have a sex. It's a giant floating rock orbiting a ball of fire and has stuff growing on it. And it routinely kills 90-95% of all life on it. So not much loving and nurture there, or motherly. Yet every koombiya hippie dippie moron talks about "Mother Earth". The give the same type of ignorant energy as those idiots who walled across the Middle East to prove it was a peace filled loving land, only for them to get raped, murdered, and dismembered.

But we were definitely laughing inappropriately at scenes. But it was either laugh or cry. I always assumed the movie was a predecessor of cannibal holocaust. I had to google background notes and it didn’t surprise me that the movie used a real indigenous colony as actors. I always hate things like that because it seems so predatory. Like, wow, shocking, demonizing humans because of their race / culture is bad. and I say all of that as a white American. honestly movies from the perspective of a person of color and depicting THEIR struggle or their side of these stories would probably be way better. one of the many reasons I hate to kill a mockingbird and how it's storyline is told through the eyes of some southern white girl who's learning that racism? is real.

I don’t often lose my appetite over even the grossest things but the whole turtle kill thing made me nauseous.

You should watch Bones and All and Raw - two more recent cannibalism films that really make you feel horrible afterwards lol (really well made though)

I could never really get myself to watch this movie bc of the animal cruelty, no way I could do it knowing it’s real. But I’ve also always wanted to know what the hype was about so I’m glad to be exposed to it this way 😅

Big thanks for not only giving a heads up when talking about some of the animal killings but also putting in a countdown. Made it super easy to skip it on phone, really appreciated cause that's a topic I cannot stomach at all ❤️

@@PK.NOiR.7You don’t visualize in your head the things people talk about? I know some don’t. For me I might as well BE watching the scene if I hear it described so - yeah - it’s helpful to know when not to listen.

Never seen this movie but the quick switch up from confusion to disappointment at 9:30 killed me

Honestly, killing animals for zero reason is just unnecessary to me. I love to hunt and do eat wild game meat but killing an animal and not using anything? Just killing it to kill it? That's stupid.

They did eat the animals, if not the crew then the natives, they just also filmed it.

Having watched this movie I can safely say it's hard to recommend to anyone. Even Cannibal Ferox is easier to recommend and I would think twice before doing that. On the upside, the soundtrack is amazing. Riz Ortolani is an absolute legend. Check out his body of work. Quite expansive. Edit: Fun fact, he did music for Mondo Cane in '65.

I guess people who the turtle scene freaks out haven't heard of hunting. They decapitated it first, that's pretty humanely. Then they eat it, classic catch, clean, and cook.

Does that fucking justify killing it for a movie?

If you want a better disturbing movie, The Last Horror Movie is an interesting one as it analyzes the perpetuation of violence by the media that films it and uses it as content and how much they’re complicit in it etc. Also Funny Games, the original or the remake, is a good disturbing movie that comments on the nature of violence in media. A lot of Haneke’s movies are good disturbing movies actually. Martyrs is great too but can’t remember if you’ve watched it yet.
