The whole bit with Rick Moranis only doing the James Earl Jones' "Darth Vader" imitation when the visor was down was an on-set improvisation by Rick when they were filming the first scene. It cracked up the entire crew, including Mel Brooks himself, and Mel told him to keep doing it for the whole movie. 🙂

On an additional note, Mel Brooks did plan on a sequel to this, but Rick Moranis's wife died, and he took a long break from acting. Moranis would have returned for the sequel anyway, but his asking price was higher than the studio was willing to go (He wanted a payday high enough to provide great opportunities for his kids in his absence). The sequel was to be called Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2, and it would have leaned harder on Star Trek than Star Wars.

Fun fact - if you ever watch the director's cut with full commentary from Mel Brooks, he mentions the idea for Mr. Coffee came from him filming movie AFTER movie and having to reshoot scenes when people would notice a styrofoam cup lying around on the set. My apologies if you have brought this up in the past, but for John Hurt, if you watch(ed) Doctor Who at all, particularly the 50th anniversary special ten years ago, he played "The War Doctor" in that as well. He was also the head of the government in V for Vendetta. In short, he had an amazing career and died too young...even when he was in his 70's!

"I knew it I'm surrounded by assholes!" 13 year old me was on the ground laughing for several minutes at that joke. Still the funniest part of the movie. Mel Brooks went to George Lucas to get his blessing to do this movie. His only condition was no merchandising as spaceballs action figures would be too close to star wars. Mel had no plans to do any merchandising but that condition gave him the idea to make it a gag in the movie. By all accounts George Lucas loved the movie. Rick Moranis ad-libbed the scene playing with the dolls. They were part of the merchandising gag and just grabbed them and he did that.
@shuboy05

Technically George Lucas had a hand in this movie. All the post-production (special effects and sound) was done by the same companies that made Star Wars! Hence why those effects look so good.

High Anxiety is one of my favorite Mel Brooks movies for the simple reason that it is one of his only movies where Mel himself plays the lead. Can't recommend it enough. Also, both versions of The Producers. I personally prefer the remake since I saw it first but holy shit, they are both amazing.
@melenatorr
@melenatorr 7 месяцев назад
The problem with "High Anxiety" is that you really need to know your Hitchcock to get what's going on: the first time I saw it I hadn't seen anything other than "Psycho" and the "The Birds". "High Anxiety" came off as dull and nonsensical. After seeing a few Hitchcock movies, I got it and thought it was really, really funny and also well done. I like the original "Producers": it's clean, spare and wastes very little time in getting us from one point to another; the script and the priceless cast sell themselves deftly and with dry, dark humor. The re-make is wonderful but, I think, overdone; and whether or not he's dated, LSD from the original is part of what completes things, and not having him in the newer version unmakes things for me a bit.

Had a feeling you would like this. I love that there's no effects on Rick Moranis's voice when the helmet's down. It's just a voice he does. 😂 Also, the guy who plays King Roland is Dick Van Patten, who was a big comedic actor in the old days. One of my favorite moments in this film, which I didn't even catch the first time (you may have noticed while editing), is when they're reading back the combination to the air shield and he's just staring at the camera and nodding, but he almost loses it. You can tell he wants to laugh so bad, and it always makes me wonder about the takes they didn't use. This movie is VERY funny, but I still think I prefer Young Frankenstein (which also stars Gene Wilder btw).

Great reaction. I read the book before I saw the movie and it was also great. The opening with Spaceball 1 was because all the Star Wars films opened with a Star Destroyer and started off the 'big ship' trend. In the book, they carried that off by having an entire half page dedicated to the line "the huge engines pushing section, after section, after section, after section, after section, after section, after section, after section......" etc.

Two quick notes. First, I don't know if you watch Star Trek, but the Spaceball using the Afro comb in the desert and calls out, "We ain't fuond sh*t", is Tim Russ, best known to Trekkies and Tuvok from Voyager. Second, you may be amused to know that all the references to merchandising in the movie are a subtle jab at George Lucas. Much a Al Yankovic doesn't legally need to get permission from an artist to parody one of their songs but does so anyway to maintain goodwill, Brooks didn't need to get Lucas' permission to parody Star Wars, but did so anyway. Turns out Lucas loved the movie and gave permission with only one condition, that the movie not release any merchandising material. I guess Lucas didn't want it to be confused with Star Wars stuff, but one has to imagine there is a link to the condition and the continual references in the movie. This movie even gave us the "Not a flamethrower" flamethrower from Elon Musk.

11:40 that is Michael Winslow a very talented actor and commedian who also can do just about any sound effect he puts his mind to. If you want to see him playing a role where he basically never stops doing the sound effects, watch the Police Academy movies. He is in most of them. Also 14:12 if you ever watch it again, when Dark Helmet says take a 5 min break. Take notice of the time of the movie that has progressed. It will be exactly 5 minutes to the second before you see the Spaceballs in Spaceball 1 ship again. 22:57 The only movie I know this guy from for sure is as the Insurance salesman from Groundhog Day, his name is Stephen Tobolowsky.
