Um, maybe because it wasn't THAT great? When people babble about the Oscars, do you actually know anything about acting? Not that John Goodman isn't a great actor, but this was nothing special, jesus christ. When Gene Hackman doesn't get nominated for The Conversation, THAT'S when you act surprised, not when it's the dopey "Big Lebowski", jesus christ almighty you're hilarious. People and their hilarious Oscar "outrage". 😅 And always by people with the worst taste, and who know the least about movies and acting and basically anything other than being a lumpen couch potato with a remote control. "The Big Lebowski" was a DISAPPOINTMENT after "Fargo", cult of Lebowski or no cult of Lebowski. This was the year of Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line; "Lebowski" wasn't even a BLIP on the radar that year. It's so hilarious that you'd think a movie like "Lebowski" would be considered for an Oscar. "Fargo"? Different story. That one has got Oscar written all over it (and sure enough, it was nominated for a bunch, and won some, quite rightly) . You can't tell the difference, huh? Hilarious.

@@jeremiahfrench94 Also agree. I’ve always felt that the ‘cash machine’ line flew unnoticed under most folks’ radar, just judging from the invariably muted reactions from virtually all the different audiences I’ve happened to watch it with. To be fair, it *is* one of those movie quotes that you could totally innocently drop, fully contextually, into any conversation whilst out on the town, and nobody would bat an eyelid, whilst you enjoy a crude little in-joke moment all to one’s self. You know, just if that happens to be the kind of thing that one enjoys doing…

Two bits of trivia: 1) Jeff Bridges has pointed to this as his favorite role, even proclaiming "I am The Dude." 2) The song over the end of the credits is "Dead Flowers" by Townes Van Zandt. It's a Stones cover, owned by Allen Klein, who gave it to them to use for free after "I HATE THE FUCKIN' EAGLES!" line.

One of those movies that either you click with or you don’t… and thankfully, it seems to click with lots of people. My favorite detail in the whole movie is Philip Seymour Hoffman’s portrayal of Brandt. He is about the only new person The Dude meets who actually calls him The Dude or Dude. Virtually everyone else calls him some variation of his “real” name (Jeff, Jeffrey, Mr Lebowski, etc), but Brandt with his proper speech uses The Dude’s chosen moniker. The juxtaposition is hilarious.

When Donny is dying you can see how much Walter cares for him, and you can hear it in his voice. As for the dialogue, every word is from the script-every "um", "uh", stutter, all from the script! What I love about Coen brother's films is the fact that they are so dense, and that lends itself well to multiple rewatches. Initially, I thought Walter was really unlikable, but on 2nd viewing, knowing what I know about the story, he became my favourite character.

Walter always acts and sounds crazy, but if you notice he always had his friends back. He actually cared about them. Especially Donny. Yeah, he always ripped on him but at the ending fight scene you see his attitude change by keeping Donny calm, saying there's nothing to worry about, and holding him back staying out of the situation.

I’ve seen this movie more times than I can remember and it gets funnier everytime. So many small little details that you notice on multiple watches. In the beginning, the goons broke into the dudes place asking “where’s the fu#$ing money Lebowski?” At the end, the dude does the same thing to the Big Lebowski. The dialog is brilliant. The ever evolving situation is crazier by the minute and the cast is phenomenal! Also, a quick note, the reason Walter keeps telling Donny to shut the f#&@ up, is an inside joke with the Cohen brothers. Steve’s character in Fargo never shut up so they thought it would be hilarious to tell him to shut up all the time in this film. Comedic masterpiece!

You also saw John Goodman in "O Brother" as Big Dan Teague. Great reaction to a great movie - I have a fond memory of dressing as The Dude for Hallowe'en one year (in my mum's beige house gown and a wig) and having "The Dude abides!" shouted at me while walking around town. Since the Coen brothers are really doing it for you, I'd like to suggest either "Burn After Reading" or even better "Barton Fink" - the latter has John Turturro in the starring role, who played Jesus here and Pete in "O Brother" (and also has John Goodman in another big 'n' shouty role).

Great reaction. For another excellent Coen brothers comedy, try ‘The Hudsucker Proxy’. It’s a quirky story and the cast is fantastic, including one of the last roles by Paul Newman. For whatever reasons the movie didn’t register as powerfully with the public as most of their others, but it’s still great. As far as I’m concerned, it deserves more exposure, and reactions will help do that, because it has all the usual Coen brothers magic.

I saw Raising Arizona (1987) as an kid with my dad and found it hilarious. Of course, i didn't know who The Coen Brothers were back then. Over 10 years later, i learned who and how great these sibling auteurs were. This was an incredible piece of work. Not your average caper and then some. One of Jeff Bridges' most iconic films and roles. As "The dude", it sort of matches his off screen personality and also he's surrounded by a great cast. Most wouldn't believed that this was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Huge honor for any cult classic and it is much deserved. There is a spinoff, "The Jesus Rolls" (2020). It's also the remake of a French film Going Places (1974), John Turturro reprises his role as Jesus Quintana and is writer/director of it

Great reaction to this cult film! This is one of my absolute favorite comedies. It delivers on so many levels and the story is just incredibly creative and fun. The backstory to the plot is even more entertaining when you know some of the film noir classics referenced here by the Cohen brothers, particularly many of Raymond Chandler's novels with some confusing plot twists.

@@trevorgoddard2278 Yes, the original is considered a classic comedy but is not nearly as colorful or funny as the Coen Brothers' version. A classic. 27:28 Another classic, Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In). He was a GIANT Country Star, but this one was from earlier in his career when he was trying to make a go of Rock music.
