I've recently finished my career, retirement is an odd word. I can tell you that 40+ years after I finished my degree, I could never have predicted where the path would take me. In hindsight I can tell you that this zig zag career path took me exactly where I needed to be to find my passion. Good luck on your journey, don't forget to explore the forks in the road.

This plus you never know if actually working on your degree will make you happy for the next 40+ years. You might like it but after a few years you might not enjoy it anymore or the pressure will become too much to deal with and you might find a new passion. There is nothing wrong with that and you shouldn't limit yourself to what you can do

I spent my late teens, all of my twenties and early thirties studying medicine, specialties and subspectialites, and at the end of it all when I finally got all the degrees, I had an existential crisis, and am now “finding myself” among other things. Congratulations to you on finishing your degree and best of luck!

I find it strange that people have to explain why they want to stay living with their parents. there is absoulutly nothing wrong with that, it is actually wonderful, and you and your parents are lucky to have each other. I wish you all the best xx

Dear Ruby and all other viewers this may concern: NEVER ever let anyone tell you that you shouldn't live with your parents, that you're too attached to your parents or that you should be embarrassed living with your parents. I lost my parents super early and now, at an age where I could be a parent to most of you myself, I'd give an arm and a leg to have my parents back. A good relationship with your parents is special, unique and unlike anything you'll ever have in your life. Cherish it, embrace it, be proud of if and protect it at all cost. And NEVER apologize for it!

Ruby, I'm so glad you happily addressed the stigma against staying at home to figure things out properly and not being 100% certain about an occupation and lifestyle. It brings me so much comfort to know that others are like this, and I've always believed this sort of thing is so much better than quickly making an ill-informed, life changing decision due to pressure than taking a bit of time to discern what's truly right for you. (I'm studying liberal arts with an emphasis on Humanities in university, and am in the same boat, though I know I want to do something within that field, whether it be a local museum curator to some sort of official community service position.) Can't wait to see all of your upcoming content, and I'll always be supporting you over here in the US! 😄

Why not just take a job right after and try it and if you don't like it then leave the job? Idk but in my country you can leave a job without even giving a reason with the leave time being usually 1month (so if you inform your boss for one more month you may be legally obliged to work that job if your boss wants you there until he can find someone instead of you) and then you can just try another job

In my country to be with your parents till 30 years old or even more is very normal! People work and study but still live with their parents and that's totally fine! I hope this stigma will disappear soon, there's nothing wrong in living with your parents as an adult 😊 I wish you the best in your new journey Ruby, you are such an inspiration to me! I’m crying so much watching this. I finished my degree for English literature and creative writing yesterday and I was so happy- I felt I could accomplish anything, whereas today I feel sad. I feel sad/ relieved for my mental health because for years it’s been under pressure by the system. It’s been under pressure because of the deadlines and expectations. I’m finally free but yet I don’t know what to do with my life. I don’t know where to go next and that’s beautiful but yet so scary ♥️

I have studied in engineering (computer, electrical and software), then I tried actuarial science. Then I dropped out of university, and took a 2 year off to ponder about what I truly wanted to do with my life. I went back to university at 28 years old to complete a nursing bachelor degree, and I'm now studying to earn a phd nursing degree, 10 years later. Life is wonderful, no matter the journey :)

this give me faith. I never managed to finish Uni since it wasn't easy as someone with ADHD. I've been working ever since and I feel like such a failure. Hoping to find a uni path that's better suited for my brain than the one I was at.

@@romycullen17 As someone diagnosed with ADHD as a child and diagnosed again last year, at 26, I thought I could also share my journey. It was difficult for me to complete university degree and it took me four years instead of standard three and two changes of majors (switched from Italian to Russian and Polish and ended up earning BA degree in just Polish Philology). After that, I have switched majors and universities almost every year, I have spent some time pursuing degree in Social Work, Education, Gerontagogy, Polish again, Veterinary Nurse and Management. And since ADHD usually comes with other mental health problems I could not focus on both school and work. I was very anxious to attend in class lectures, because I did not want to meet other people, so I was missing all of the classes, while thinking that I was a failure. Last week I have started online MSc. in Marketing, while teaching languages online as my main source of income. Studying online and choosing the time when I want to study, while limiting myself to finish maximum of three 20-minute lessons per day was great option for me, since I have a short attention span and I am focused in many different topics, In addition to pursuing degree in Marketing, I also attend classes on Cybersecurity, Online Teaching, Graphic Design and Programming, which can be all used while working on my Marketing projects. You are not alone and I wish you could find study path that suits you the best :)

I love living with my parents too! I get along with my mom so well, we are very close and my dad is chronologically ill, in hospice, so I want to spend as much time with him as possible. People definable judge but I fail to see the problem. Good job on doing what works for you!

Took me 7 years to do something with my degree. I just worked easy jobs because I thought it was easy, but the monotony was killing me slowly. Now I’m in the career I’ve always wanted and life has never been easier. Ignore the pressure and you’ll be grand!!

Found it so amazing to hear about how happy you are and also how mindful. I’m graduating high school and have felt so much pressure in trying to find a college to go to. So I’ve decided to take at least a semester off just to really see my options and decide on what is best for me. I did a BA in Applied Linguistics, a MA in Translation and now I'm doing a BA in Graphic Design ;) While doing my BA I already knew that I didn't love the course, but I stuck it out bc I felt like I'd gotten too far in to change courses. Then did the MA bc we were told our BA alone would get us nowhere (lol), and finally decided to do graphic design bc I knew I'd resent any of the jobs I could get with a linguistics degree. Now I'm doing what I absolutely love! Only took me five years to figure out 🤣 I briefly considered my current course fresh out of high school but stuck with my original plan bc I wasn't ready to step out of my comfort zone at 18. Now I am, slowly but surely ;)

I so appreciate your talk on us students not having to have it all figured out yet right away! I took a step away from school to focus on my mental health this summer and at the time it was like the scariest thing in the world because I felt the pressure to succeed and to graduate on time. But in the end, everyone who truly loves me like my family and my real friends supported my decision to get better and my need to focus on my mental health. I will be going back this Fall because my college has been really accomodating so I'm blessed in that way! You are giving me so much motivation to do well in school. I was failing an advanced course and now fingers crossed I'm hoping to finish the course with an A-! Thank you Ruby for always encouraging us! Much love from America! 🇺🇸❤

I finished my master's last November but I never felt the closure you feel. I was so hard on myself and on the idea of what's next?. I found your channel just in the end of 2021, but I have binge watched so many of your videos, because your journey is so empressive, and so amazing to watch! I just started my own journey last summer to take an education. Ruby, you're such an inspiration to me! You just do your own thing even if it is unconventional. I'm 25 now and I really feel your words on living at home/with your parents. When I was 18 I really felt the pressure to move out. During my first year at uni I felt very home sick and went home every weekend. Even though I got used to living alone by now and moved even further away, I still love to go home and spend time with my parents:)

I’m so happy for you and it really feels quite surreal that you’re “already” finished, it’s been such a joy to be able to follow your academic journey this far. Also, I just wanted to say that I relate very much to the feeling of wanting to stay at home rather than move out, simply because I feel so comfortable and happy living with my parents, and we get along really well. It’s so cool to see that your degree is finally over after all these years of watching your videos! Congratulations and good luck in life. I just finished my first year of college and I feel like my life is starting in a way. Kind of strange to feel this at the end of my first year and not the beginning but haha it’s whatever. I like to hear that you’ll be spending your gap year writing and honing skills! I’m gonna try to spend the summer honing skills as well as a music major by playing and writing music as much as I can. You're not alone in having felt odd after submitting your dissertation. I remember when I submitted my PhD dissertation. After the viva, revisions, etc., I submitted it one night and just like that, 12.5 years of university study was all over. It was such an odd feeling. I stared at the cat and looked a bit lost for awhile.

I’m in a similar boat to you. I’m on my last draft of my dissertation and then I’ll be finished so next week hopefully! Although I’m also turning 40 next week eeek.

Congratulations Rudy! So well deserved! I have really enjoyed the study vlogs, as they motivate me to keep going in my academic journey. I recently took on a B. A program for communication disorders to become a speech-language pathologist assistant, but did not work out for me. Hey Ruby! I've been watching your videos for four years now, and it's really great to see how much you've grown as a person. I am just done with my A-levels (my last exam was four days ago), and I am also planning to do a gap year next (and I will also focus on writing, as I too desire to become an author). Very lovely Ruby: I agree, how one defines success differs from person to person and I, like you, define success by personal characteristics and passions and how I impact those around me in whatever capacity they exist in my world. I think it is beautiful that you are intentionally taking time to, for lack of a better phrase, “discover yourself” in the context of the bigger picture whilst still pursuing things that bring you great joy. Hi Ruby, I really liked the changing of location! And of course congratulations!! And about moving out, I had a similar situation. I moved in with my dad after I finished my degree and it was really important for both of us and also the best option. I spend a lot of thoughts about it beeing considered a failure and came to the conclusion, that it doesn't matter what others think, time to spend with your parents is limited and we both valued it, so it was a good decision. :)

Awww! Congratulations Ruby!!! There may be different periods of your life where you won't know what you are doing. It can last for years. And THAT is okay. When people have just graduated, I will ask them what they are doing next. Selfishly, it is partly to live vicariously through them and partly it's to see if what they are pursuing is something I might me interested in. It's never meant to put pressure on them. So keep that in mind when people ask.
