one of the biggest problems with the game is that important events and endings, are dependent on stupid questions you wouldn't think are important, same problem with Persona 1.

Battle system and first person perspective threw me off at first but I got used to it. I'm 10 hours in and really enjoying this title. The atmosphere is amazing
22hr?! Yo thats hella short. I do wanna pick this up doe. But I have the same problem of really enjoying something but then leaving it for months for no reason. But if its this short then I could probably binge it over the weekend or something. But I still need to go back and finish smt 1. Im legit near the end but mentally I can not force myself to boot it up on my modded snes classic.

I'm with you on this: I enjoyed it a lot especially for the manga/anime feel it has throughout the entire game. And I have recently published a podcast where we talk about the games we recommend as starters (in Italian, sorry!) and I mentioned Soul Hackers as some sort of middle ground for the series as it's relatively new in its 3DS version but as a pre-Nocturne game it holds all the classical mechanics of the series, so it was interesting getting on it for historical reasons as well. :)
funcounting The gimmick is that you can keep spamming spells at him and he’ll explode with energy. I actually just used buffs and ice-immune demons/armour and he ran out of MP. With some buffs and debuffs he dies pretty easily. Hah
So far this looks like the type of game that intrigues me from the concept alone because i love when video games delve into technology and hacking really awesome concept with Smt
Ha ha hah. If you think Soul Hackers's Loyalty system is bad, the original Devil Summoner's Loyalty system is even worse. Devil Summoner's battle system is a lot like Persona 3's in that you don't really have direct control of your party members, but have to instruct them to follow certain strategies. What Devil Summoner's Loyalty system does is it restricts the precision of command you can give your demons. Level 1 only lets you use "Go", Level 2 allows vague Offense or Defense commands, Level 3 lets you specify whether you want them to Attack/Guard or use a Skill. Only at Level 4 (the highest) can you command demons to use specific Skills, and even then, based on Personality, there's no guarantee they'll listen.
Burnout halfway through a game is what I go through on almost anything I play nowadays. It happened with persona 5 for some reason for me, although I did finish it last fall. I wonder if there are any ways to avoid or cure it. I still need to finish tons of games I started like Solatorobo, Pokémon Moon, Digital Devil Saga, Earthbound, etc.
It’s so funny, I had the same thing happen with “Soul Hackers”! I’ve been a huge SMT fan since I first picked up “SMT III: Nocturne” back when I was in college in 2004. I remember being excited for “Soul Hackers” and getting it playing a little bit, and then setting down like Fither did with the intention of picking it back up again. I did this sporadically for a few years. I liked it, but like Fither said in the video, for whatever reason it just didn’t grab me. (I also didn’t really like the whole demon loyalty thing. It was an interesting idea, but I found it more frustrating than fun). But I just recently picked it back up with the intention of finishing it since it’s one of the only SMT games I haven’t beaten. (And Nemissa is one of my SMT top girls along with Mitsuru and Makoto, LOL!)
I finished Soul Hackers earlier this year and I liked it, but I strangely had a harder time with it. Maybe because I’m not used to the older SMT combat, but this game definitely gave me a hard time. I probably just need to get good lol. Took me about 44 hours. The characters are dope, the story is silly but still good, the aesthetic is great, and the combat is pretty alright. I’m definitely glad I played it... now to play Strange Journey. I’m sure that game will treat me well :)
Fuck dude I understand you 300%, I gotta finish that bad boy up. I think I'm absolutely in love with the idea of soul hackers rather than the game itself.
Congrats for finishing it. I did the same thing with Fire Emblem: Awakening a few days and am just starting on Devil Survivor 2. I've had those games way too long.
Thank you so much Fither, Thanks to you I finally beat Soul Hackers, I got stuck at Manitou and I couldn't beat him so I really didn't play it much for about two years then you uploaded this video and I gave another shot I finally did today. Soul Hackers isn't the best ever, it has a a lot of weird and annoying game mechanics but these mechanics were interesting, I always saw the original Devil Summoner and Soul Hacker as Devil Summoning Simulators, its a bit more realistic, the plays like this is what its like to be a Devil Summoner, the demons say things while attack unlike most MegaTen games, if they don't like you they can just not listen to you, and some demons don't fight alongside other demons because of alignment. I really like this game but making the game more realistic doesn't make it better, but it still had some pretty cool ideas, as a Devil Summoner I thinks its not as good as King Abaddon but its way better then Soulless Army and I haven't played the original so can't compare it, it seems like its basically the same game. Soul Hackers a good game with interesting ideas that harm the gameplay but the ideas are cool enough that its not that big of a deal.
22hrs? Damn man, I have about 40hrs in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance in just the first chapter just in grinding for the jobs. It really sound great, I think i'll buy mine in a few weeks.

I just realized that I set down Soul Hackers a year ago, was really enjoying it, and have yet to go back to it... Whelp might as well start over, because I won't remember what I was doing.
Lol I'm on the same boat. I've owned Soul Hackers since it came out on the 3DS and never even touched it. But I really got to one of these days. Also Serial Experiments Lain is the sickest shit.
I just started playing it it's my first SMT. So far I like it a lot. Any advice? I think it's funny that you can take a waifu quiz before you even meet them.
I love this game so much. I wish it was a lot longer (32 hours for my first playthrough), but it is close to perfect as is. The dungeons are quick and fun, and give a good sense of progression. The story and setting are fun, and I LOVED the battles against the other Summoners. The graphics are also pretty much the peak of 3D visuals. The early 3D graphics from the Saturn and early PS1 are so beautiful.
One way to just kill every boss easily is just buffs since they stack up to 4 times so lower the defense enough and whatever attack you are using then just watch as you do like 4000 damage per hit
Congrats that you beat Soul hackers dude and my God your friend bugged you to beat the game too? Funny because my friend did the same thing with me only with Persona 5 and your mom saying that the girl with the blue hair is hot made my day lol. Your mom is cool for saying that.
Im doing my second playthrough going for ending 2 and getting my compendium/characters maxed. I got insta killed so many times during the dungeon with the two towers. That part for some reason was really hard even with a good party setup. I'm really hoping SMT V does very well so maybe someday we can get more Devil Summoner games. I'm honestly very worried about the Megaten series at the moment. I want to see this series glorified and advertised well but they just will not do it. They took the Shin Megami Tensei brand off of Persona for some odd reason... Which makes people who start with Persona even more oblivious to the fact that Persona is a sub series. It was honestly the worst time to take the brand off as well considering Persona 5 incredible success. I just don't understand some of these decisions. Is it Sega? I mean Its hard to tell but only time will tell I guess.
Yo, dude I feel you on leaving games unplayed for no reason. Like I also have had Soul Hackers for a long while and I just haven't finished it. The same goes for FE:A, Gravity Rush, and a few others despite my enjoyment of them. Really need to get off my ass and finish Soul Hackers now.
I’ve been sitting on this video since it came out because I wanted to beat Soul Hackers before I watched it. I might as well share my thoughts about the game since this place is as good as any. I really enjoyed the end-game. The story is unfocused at the start and a bit too “Saturday morning cartoons” for me. So many colourful badguys that have their own dungeons and then die in said dungeons. The early dungeons are also a bit too small and simple. When the story picks up and in particular after the final vision quest the dungeon design is really cool. I like the Algon Monolith in particular and the Underground made for a great final dungeon. I chose to kill Tiamat in the vision quest and that seemed to change how the final dungeon and boss played out but I don’t know the details of what changes. I found demon attitudes to be a bit simple except I never really figured out what differentiated Sly and Calm demons. Wild, Kind, and Dumb demons were too easy to get to 5 loyalty and from there their attitudes didn’t mean much. I mostly used Neutral aligned demons and only summoned Chaotic or Lawful demons for boss fights where I wanted a full party. I don’t mind that the game restricts which demons will talk to you based on your party composition but I think it benefited Neutral too much. I wish the Hero would change alignment like in Strange Journey so that there was an incentive to go EC or EL. I loved the aesthetic. The world was so cool and cyberpunk. I particularly loved the 90s FMVs. They really added a lot of charm to the game. All in all I had a good time. Like yourself I’ve been sitting on this game for years. I really loved it whenever I was playing but it never got its hooks in until the last 10 hours or so. I loved the aesthetic and the story was pretty fun.
Awesome video man! I've always wanted to play Soul Hackers but YHVH seemingly doesn't want me to do so since everytime I try, something happens that doesn't allow me to do so. Now play the Raidou games, bub.
I've owned Soul Hackers for like 2 months and i got stuck in the VR Art Museum when you go inside the paintings like Mario 64. I love the game but i get what you mean about there being parts in the game where you're like "Where the fuck do i go?" Lol. Its an awesome game though.
Been a while, but now i too can finally say ive beaten soul hackers Loved it a lot. May or may not do ng+ and try to get a grasp on some of the more complex fusion stuff etc Next up for me is raidou kuzunoha...i remember i quit that for an ACTUAL reason though >.> PS loved your stream the other day/yesterday/whenever/i should go to bed my brain doesnt work Any opinions on Raidou?
Are you gonna do reviews of the other smt games because that would be interesting for me to hear about your opinions on the different smt game (main games and spin offs)
I am doing my first run of Shin Megami Tensei right now. I am currently at "Destinyland" and don't know how long I have to go yet. I am doing chaos first so that's what alignment I am doing right now. I know last week I finally beat Metatron after a year of difficulty on Devil Survivor Overclocked.
SomnusNocturne If you're using the English patch, find a patch for that patch. If you aren't able to get guns, the patch is why. A patch for the patch fixes this. If you are playing the IOS version, this advice is of no use.
Personally I've had Ace attorney: Apollo Justice in my possession for about 4 years and I keep telling myself I'll play it but I just haven't found the right moment. Like. I love the ace attorney series and I know I'll enjoy it, but somehow it's been 4 fucking years and I still haven't played it. Damn.
I can never get into soul hacker for one reason and one reason only:THE STUPID AFFINITY SYSTEM WHERE YOUR DEMONS WILL DISOBEY YOU AND DITCH YOU BEFORE A BOSS BATTLE
Fuck this game, almost no demons have buffs\debuffs in it. I got to the last boss and turns out you actually have to use them to beat the thing. Imagine having a matador in your game but it's actually the last boss, lmao.
As someone who has even finished smt 1 and 2, Soul Hackers gameplay was just too weird for me (and boring), i might give it a go again when i literally have nothing else to play
