Atlus/SEGA should take advantage and port SMT IV/Apocalypse to Switch.

P4G on steam led me to Atlus, then I found P5R now this blessing and I never have played an SMT game before and Im having a real blast! Atlus is the 🐐 of jrpgs in my book

After 89 hours, I'm gonna say GOTY 2021, easily.

I'm 60hrs in I been loving it. My 1st SMT game highly addictive. The loop just goes together so well. The fact that the demon you get you need to make new stronger demons and those then unlock newer demons to fuse. It's endless. Then the exploration is rewarding the environment definitely have a BOTW vibe that reward you with the Miman and the treasures.

As my first SMT game, i have to agree... That game has such an amazing & challenging world that you can easily lose time in.. I love almost everything about tgis game.. The best RPG ive played since Persona 5 Royal..

Yeah, it's super addictive. One thing I've noticed (and you touched on this) is how the game repeatedly gives you clear goals to work towards and it dangles them in front of your face from early on. Like, yeah, there are super bosses running around on the overworld from the start, but along with that, the reverse compendium fusion function for example lets you see demons WAY before you can actually fuse them as long as you've already recruited/fused the right demons. That to me is such a smart way to keep you hooked. I'm looking at demons that I won't be able to get for another 20 levels, and I'm already planning ahead and thinking about my future parties. New possibilities are constantly being unlocked, and that's what makes the game addictive for me. In general, the game is good about quality of life features too - granted there's no autosave but that's by design and I appreciate the added wrinkle of having to return to save points. But lots of little details just FEEL right. Like how you pick up items on the field automatically when you run by them or being able to pay to Miman locations, etc. Lots of little things like that that make the game fun without any unneeded filler or wastes of time. You can tell they put a lot of thought into what things are automated vs. what things the player has to do manually and prioritized ease of play and enjoyment. Very smartly done. Beautifully designed game.

My first SMT game and im loving it. Recently got xenoblade chronicles definitive edition and fire emblem 3 houses as a gift so I think I'm set for the next 5 to 6 months.

With persona 5 and smt5 this is why atlus is my favorite game company

It's crazy how the journos did this game such injustice. For JRPG fans, this game is absolutely exquisite. Lower than a 9 is criminal, IMO.

As a Pokemon fan since gen 1, I've been consistently disappointed in the franchise for many reason ever since Sun and Moon. I had never played a SMT game before, I decided to pick up SMT V and I'm a extremely happy that I did. Just like OJ said, it really is one of the best JRPG of all time. If it wasn't for the fact that I didn't pick up Pokemon BDSP I probably wouldn't have played this game.

Pre ordered a while back. Had no time to play til 3 days ago when I got Covid. Now I’m just quarantined up playing SMT5. It’s definitely the best JRPG I’ve played in a while.

Fantastic video OJ!! I agree with you fully!! Before the game came out I was already seeing the potential for it to be the best game of all time for me. I won't say it is yet since I need to complete the game (45 hours in) I am nearing the end of the main plot. I have to say though it's the most addictive game I've played in a long time. It's everything I wanted. Its too addictive that I can't get other things done. I could relate and agree with everything you said in your video which made me smile. Also funny that you had the same team as me lol. Alice, Yoshitsune and Idun (swapping with Artemis at times)

The game's just that good. It has been years since I stayed awake the whole night til dawn playing a game. I haven't felt burnout after 30 hours and I know I can keep up feeling the same for at least other 90 hours.

I swear to God, if Cyberpunk is best RPG of this year over SMT V, I'm gonna flip.

I've been watching your content for years and I've loved them! I previously only played the Pokémon Games in terms of JRPGs. I purchased Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition and I'm level 25 in it. I'm loving it so far. I also started p through Persona 4 Golden on the PC. Also loving that. Do you think I would be able to play a more niche JRPG like the SMT games? They look amazing but idk if I'll be able to play them. Thinking of giving it a try and who knows, maybe I will be able to easily play it. Thanks for all the amazing content you have provided throughout the years!

I'm in at 87 hours and I've enjoyed every minute of SMT V. Playing it is one of those rare experiences where a game feels like it is the perfect game for me to be playing at the time and all of the time spent playing it feels like a huge eruption of joy. Even encountering frustrating obstacles feels less annoying than usual and only makes me feel more determined to overcome them. It's a feeling of being "in the zone" while playing a game that just really connects with me and I hope others have found games that have made them feel a similar way while playing them.

So far I like this game better than persona 5 Royal I love them both but I do like SMT 5 better.

My problem with this game, sorry but after playing Persona 5, I am left scratching my head... where is Joker? Where are the Phantom Thieves? Seriously? Not even a mention of them??? What? Plus, all the darkness?? The game starts fine, in your Tokyo classroom. I had high hopes. Boom, completely dashed. Suddenly, NO classroom, NO friends, NO social link opportunities, NOTHING. I want my damn money back. This game is NOT what it was advertised to be. I am literally about the break my switch in half now, I am THAT upset here.

I'm about 50 hours in and enjoying it, but I feel like the level design holds it back. The Da'at areas are incredibly same-y and sometimes obtuse to navigate.

Coming off of games like ff7 remake, tales of arise and Ghost for Tsushima. This game really lack Character progression and storytelling. I went into this game with the mindset of this game being in the ranks of the 3 mention above. I was quit disappointed. You're not wrong. I've got 65 hours in so far and just got to the 4th region in Da'at and it's just a fantastic experience. The addictive gameplay loop keeps me going and the freedom helps avoid burnout. The customization makes it fun to build up your favorite demons and the presentation is top tier (performance issues aside). The constant challenge makes every encounter meaningful and not just "mash a to clear mobs". I don't think it's an exaggeration to say it's one of the greatest games of all time already! P.S. Hard Gang report in!

SMT V is my game of the year is HAND DOWN the best RPG of 2021 and definitely a big step up from other SMT games.

Im just so happy that decent turn based JRPGS are still made, using brains rather than mash the one button attack maybe a dodge and and block if lucky.

Never played any SMT before, and this game has reached my top1. Really, I'm +70 hours in it so far and not planning on stopping anytime yet. OJ's review is spot on, no exageration here, this game is special

underrated MVP

I'm on ng+++ about to be 4 and did every side quest, found all miman and there's STILL so much to do. Even after getting lv99 I'm still out here getting beat by the superboss. They make sure there's always a challange no matter what lv you're on. all that's left is to beat the superbosses and get that secret fourth ending

When I first played it I wasn't feeling it (desert starting area felt drab). I'm in the 4th area and its great (hard to say whether its one of the best games of all time). Solid 9/10

I’d never played a SMT game prior, or really anything like it as far as turn based style and collecting. But I gave SMTV a go, and man it’s addicting. It took a little time but once it clicked it made it hard to put down.

It’s my first SMT game and I’m completely addicted!! I love the game play loop and fusing demons is so satisfying!

I too have fallen into the trap of forgetting i have to do real life when i play this. Also am i then only one who feels more anticipation waiting to see what miracles i get from abscesses than what demons i can get? Dont get me wrong the latter provides a huge amount of antocopation but the miracles can really change things up

It just refines every single element and even classic gripes like exploration into something enjoyable. The world feels alive with monsters on the field and being able to run around and platform is something I never even knew I needed until now. It's addicting for sure. Normally ill turn a game on and turn it back off because I dread some of those slow burn mechanics but this game is just a well oiled machine.

It's pretty good, but I'm not in love with it like some of you. I find the challenge is just customizing your team for each boss, but to me it feels like busy work. Classic style RPGs like dragon quest have more involved plots and bring more of a sense of adventure and for challenge I prefer tactical RPGs like XCOM or Fire Emblem on higher difficulties.

No doubt my favorite RPG since XBC2.

I don't get it. The game is great. The gameplay is really addictive... but it's not THAT great. The battles are good, the mechanics are good, and the art direction is good... but everything else is bad or mediocre. The story has an interesting premise, but it's so short and minimal that it's not really memorable. The music sucks. Yeah, I'm sure most of the people here like the music, but I don't. That said, I do like the way the music kicks up when you select your first attack, or when you fail a negotiation and the demons attack you. The characters are the worst thing about the game. They're all almost completely forgettable and worthless. I didn't care about any of them, except Miyazu and Khonsu and even then, I barely cared. Seriously, when I say I didn't care about any of these characters I mean I didn't care AT ALL. I didn't even hate them they were just completely boring and useless. I mean I sort of kind disliked Abdiel I guess, but even then barely. I'm sorry, but it's a very bad thing when you don't even have enough investment in the characters to fully dislike them. They sort of make up for it with the demons and demon conversations, but the special ones are rare enough that I never even saw any in my playthrough, and only know about them because of RU-vid. It doesn't make up for an impression less main cast either. Again, I really liked the game, but one of the best RPG's of all time? One of the best games of all time? I disagree. It's not even just that I disagree with calling it one of the best, it's that I wouldn't even call it special. It's just a standard good game. It's not the type of game that will stick in my mind or affect me in any meaningful way. That said, at least it's better than that overblown too popular for its own good knockoff series, which shall not be named but it starts with a P... and ends with an okémon. I wrote this post before actually watching the video, but now that I've watched it... well, I won't argue with your opinions, but personally it's not hard for me to think of other turn based RPG's that I liked more than SMTV. As far as ones on the switch, then off the top of my head I liked Octopath Traveler more. That's saying something because off the top of my head, I can't think of any other turn based RPGs I played on the Switch. If we talk about some turn based RPGs that aren't on the switch then there's a bunch of them I liked way more than SMTV. I'm not gonna say it, but one of them starts with a P... and ends with an aper Mario. I also liked Persona 4 and 5 way more than this game.

This is my first SMT game and I can say it is a pretty solid game. Sure it's not Persona. No power of Friendship. But that's what makes it Shin Megami Tensei. I don't know if that made sense lol. I love the story a lot. I like the design of the protagonist. I love the environments. The demons have pretty good scaling and the music is sick! I actually am currently replaying the game right now trying to get the hidden ending(on new game+ though since theres no way i am grinding 1 to 99 again lmao). That's why I stumbled on this video.

i think that the only problem i see on this game is that some characters are not developed enough, i know that it's not a persona game with social links and those things, but some characters like Miyazu Atsuta, her story is so interesting and still we don't see her until the end of the game, and it's only a side quest... but everything else it's an amazing game.

I beat the game and all side quests. You are Cap'n crunch, as you say at the end of the video. Gameplay loop is solid. I prefer pressturn/enhanced baton pass system over any other system for RPGs, but the gameplay loop isn't the game. The characters are some of the most flat and poorly executed modern atlus has done, being a huge step back from SMT4. The story has amazing ideas that make you feel like a BA, but the execution of individual beats and lack there of weakens the core themes of the game. SMT has always been about choice, but the route split doesn't even happen until moments before the final boss and the characters/decisions are so underdeveloped that you can just choose your ending last second from what is essentially a checkbox.(other than true neutral) after the first area you get a more offensive info dump for dazai, atsuta and Tao than I have ever seen in something I would call a "good game". Pacing suffers horribly from demon king's castle to area 5 with a 20 level jump in challenge. I had to grind every side quest in the game just to get back to an appropriate level (I was around 70 when I fought vasuki) There are too many meteor sized holes to call the game GOAT in any way. These aren't small problems' they're part of the fundamental structure of the game, and inform every way it works, but yes the battle system is amazing and I prefer it over every other jrpg system if you include the challenge and battle balancing. It's just a shame that around the awesome boss fights, great battle system and fun world design we couldn't have gotten something more fully competent to tie the great ideas together. I think it's an 8 for me. Maybe 8.5

I'm sorry but if this was really one of the best games of all time then it wouldn't have been so easily forgotten in the public consciousness... especially since it's the bestselling SMT game but it's far from being the most loved one

I hope they port it to ps5 or PC so the game can reach its full potential. Kinda sucks that SMT is basically trapped on Nintendo consoles for now

SMT has always been my favorite after playing SMT II. It's exploration, it's lore, and sometimes its rather controversial story just sit right with me. The Social Link system (or rather any JRPG with a set of characters that Talks ALOT actually) makes me exhausted mentally. Which is why Mainline Megaten sits so well with me (aside from IV Apocalypse).

I was really hyped about this game ever since it was announced and I am somewhat disappointed in the game in terms of story. gameplay and mechanics is good, but story is lacking in my opinion, I liked 4/apocalypse way more in terms of story and unique fields. I would not go as far as saying is the best game, but it definitely is 1000% better than pokemon lol. Im a big fan of this series, its just the story is lacking for me. My personal fav game of this year is tales of arise. They did everything right.

after spending close to 100 hours. It is an 8.5/10. It is a good game, but definitely not that amazing. I dont think it is even the best smt game, much less one of the best of all time. The story is what holds it back. If the story didn't fall flat on its face, it probably would be a 9.5/10 type of game

This is my first megami tensei game and I think if I played nocturne first I wouldn’t even be here right now. I couldn’t be more relieved and happy that this was my first one now I might actually go back and play nocturne. Amazing game so far I’m only 40 hours in myself

SMT 5 was a very fun game, but in my opinion it was spoiled by it's happy light hearted atmosphere and half assed story. Felt more like a spin off then a mainline game. Now I really understand what the IGN dude was saying by calling it Persona without the heart.

Lol that's true this game is addicting, I will not play it in the morning if anything I'll play Pokemon Shinning Pearl. Still a cool game, but it ain't SMT V

I 100% agree with this. It's the only JRPG, that I know of, that doesn't hold your hand but give you everything that you need. The addition of platforming elements on this game makes sense. Every collectible is important and necessary including those items that you can buy from Gustave. Every quest have an interesting story arc or lore behind it. I am 40 hours on it, collecting everything from vending machines, Crystal loots and essences, Mimans, and demons, creating strategy whatever demons I have on my roster. I took time to learn every skill from everyone thru battles. I only use demon fusion when I'm stuck with a boss. I love the challenge and the hard difficulty that can come out on any battle. The story is great as well and very relatable, somewhat intriguing that makes me question the established norms and dogma that we currently have that it is somewhat even believable. I love Shin Megami Tensei V. It is a perfect JRPG for me. Thank you Atlus and thanks to the uploader and reviewer of this video.

Atlus should start publishing their games on all platforms. It's such a miss opportunity to play this game on a higher end system.

I absolutely love Shim Megami V. Is it better than Xenoblade 1+2 or a Dragon Quest 11? In my humble opinion I would say no. This game is in my top Five RPGs on the Switch. The game is awesome. I love the different demons and the quality of life improvements of the previous games in the series. Leveling up and the continuum is very addicting. The spy glasses are clutch. This games rules. I will say I’m only 19 hours in though.

SMTV is def GOTY for me, but I'd have to really think if I liked it better than my GOTY last year (Hades). That game really blindsided me with how much I enjoyed it. But SMTV is very close to that level.

When a game takes 30+ hour from you, and you still haven't scratched the surface but you still want to play more. Shout out to Disgaea, Persona, SRW and more.

This is a fantastic game, and I love it. Although I wouldn't say it's the best SMT game or even one of the "best of all time"... That title belongs to SMTDS Overclocked

Bought the game at Walmart to snag the last copy because people are buying it at the lowest price. I am new to SMT series and SMTV, for me, feels worth of my time and price and I’m less than 10 hours and at level 20 before reaching Nuwa boss fight.

I do think that nocturne is better…but this game brought a lot of “quality of life” updates that make it easy to get into (and addictive). Persona 2 eternal punishment is still my favorite game in the megaten franchise, though. I loved persona before it became a life sim. It was very comparable to SMT at that time (dark and serious)

I haven’t had this much fun since Dragon Quest XI S. The game is a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Lord knows I didn’t like SMT3N. I lose track of time easily!

I’ve decided to pick this game up during the weekend if it doesn’t sell out at the store (cart collector). This was shortly after realizing skipping BDSP was a more sound financial approach this time around, plus I haven’t beaten Let’s Go and purchased the SWSH DLC so that’s my “BDSP at home” 😅
