In this writing vlog I finished worldbuilding for a new epic fantasy series! This worldbuilding will lay the foundation for my first epic fantasy series of the year and I was itching to start!!
The writing vlog includes worldbuilding the three main cultures of the story world (at least for book 1), brainstorming mysterious world history for these cultures, figuring out languages for each of these cultures and how they name things, and creating a wiki to organize all the worldbuilding for this setting 🔥
It was an exciting week and I managed to make tons of progress!
What do you think of this writing vlog? Do you like when I share details of my own epic fantasy series? Let me know in the comments below and I'll get back to you 🙂

Which element of worldbuilding do you like creating most?? Cultures? History? Names? Something else?

Gathering photographs of the settings, clothes, vehicles and headshots of the characters. I have an ongoing and ever growing list of character names.

Ah that does sound like a fun step! I haven't done it much myself, but maybe I should try it out ;)

@@john_writing_ I am not gifted at descriptive writing. Looking at images is helpful. I watch RU-vid videos of places and eras to glean ideas for vivid language.

"It took a whole month." Oh my God, a MONTH? (casually glances at the world I've been building for 6 years).

I imagine my worldbuilding was a hollow iceberg and yours the full thing! But to be fair that month was one of multiple hours a day one day after the other

I've been reiterating on the same world since I was a kid paging through my parent's 2e AD&D books. . . I've got more notebooks than I know what to do with, the oldest of which are so faded, I'd likely need to scan and digitally enhance them to read them, and after that, they're probably obsolete from new "better" ideas I've had since I wrote those down.

What really bewilders me is that some writers (like you) will just create a long text-only document about the world. If I had to do something like that, then I would get lost in the worldbuilding. Say I want to describe the government. I would just draw a picture, a diagram, a chart of all the major players in government. Then, I will use my drawing-and-painting skills to make clothing designs and character sketches and character color palettes.

Your work is so motivating for us authors. I have to world build and research this month for my own novel. April NaNoWriMo is around the corner. Would you mind sharing the some platforms that you used to build your world? 🧡
@john_writing_
@john_writing_ Год назад
I'm happy you found this motivating! Thanks for watching :) I keep it really simple. Most of what I used is included in this video: Google docs + Dokuwiki. But I also created a map using this site: www.redblobgames.com/maps/mapgen4/ I talk more in depth about the cultural worldbuilding process in the video where I tried worldbuilding like N.K. Jemisin (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZuxLFE2YXc0.html). So that might be useful too! Oh and I also use Plottr for tracking characters, places, and plotting the story (plottr.com/?ref=323; note they do support my channel when people purchase from my link) It's kind of a patchwork, but I feel like the more comprehensive platforms are overkill for me and require too much work to organize. Is there anything specific you wanted more info about??

Might I recommend Obsidian for every note-taking and keeping task? It's absolutely amazing, lets you create links to other subjects and mindmaps and also has thousands of community made plugins to help you navigate and better organise your notes. Even a GPT powered plugin that reads your entire notes and then you can ask it questions about your entire document.

Sounds interesting, how is the learning curve? It would be good to organize things a little better 🤔

i also love obsidian! Learning Markdown can be a little frustrating but once you learn, it's a breeze (plus then you'll have learned how to write HTML too ;))

Idk why I was imagining NYC vs LA when you were explaining the differences and characteristics of the East vs the West 😂 well I do know why but Idk why it's the first thing that popped up in my mind 😂

It inadvertently makes sense, I guess it's a pattern we see among large cities in a country. There's also Glasgow vs. Edinburgh or Tokyo vs. Osaka. Humans love their tribalism 😂

@john_writing_
@john_writing_ Год назад
Thanks so much for the kind words! If by the template you mean the cultural worldbuilding stuff I filled out, a lot of it came from the process I went through in the video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZuxLFE2YXc0.html) where I tried N.K. Jemisin's process. If you're just looking for the list of cultural attributes and what not, it's nothing fancy just this: Religion, Government, Economics, Fashion, Food, History, Rites of passage, Hierarchy, Languages, Taboos/mores, Military tradition, Greetings, Swear words, Customs/traditions, Types of art, Education, Sports and Leisure. Hope this helps and thanks for watching :)

*looks down at my worlds that are multiple continents, cultures, thousands of years of history and often entirely unique biota, rarely taking less than 4 months to get even the bones established, some having years of work* Hmmm, yes, 1 month is a long time for world building.

Love how your video editing is getting better and more engaging with each video nice. Plus those tidbits of your world's lore sounds amazing. Also I tested that bit about the pronunciations comparing the western words vs Eastern and man it worked perfectly. Really got a softer side from the west than the east. So cool!

I found your channel this morning and I'm glad I did. I've already watched 4 of your videos lol the stuff you say, the way you go about your process, really speaks to me and right now I need that kind of inspo. I wrote a 300 page fantasy novel when I was 12 and then started book 2 then gave up and forgot all about it. Now I'm 27 pregnant for the 4th time and got lots of time on my hands to fix the AWFUL book I wrote as a preteen 😂 The idea is good but the way it was written absolutely is not. Nothing flows, lots of "purple prose", the world building was not properly thought out, I stole details from other authors' books, etc. So now I'm starting it from scratch but at a total loss on where to begin so watching other authors explain their processes is really helpful. Also curious, do you have any published books? Would love to check them out

Thanks so much for watching! I'm happy you've been finding my videos helpful :) If I had ever stuck with a project when I was young, I can only imagine how much work it would be to try and fix! The most I ever wrote back then was one chapter, then I didn't know what to do haha I haven't published anything yet, right now I'm focused on learning the skill of writing. So I'm just focusing on playing around with different ideas, experimenting, and figuring out how to write novels more effectively. My goal is to write something this year that I'm excited enough about to revise and publish :)

A lot of work to go yet, bud. Complete several conlangs with the alphabets. Teach people to speak them. All the gods. All the religions. The different types of government and their law books and scrolls. That's a taste. The work of a world creator, a god, is never done.
@john_writing_
@john_writing_ Год назад
haha, it is a never ending process. Since I'm just a human and not a god, unfortunately, I only have time to create as much of the world as is needed before writing. Anything else important will have to reveal itself while drafting.
