Sweet to have a real load bank. I worked for a gen company around 25 years, mostly standby sets. We got a new service manager, and he started taking in portables plus some RV work. RVs can be a bit of an issue due to the custom installation and usually they are difficult to get proper access, never mind removing one from the RV for big work.... then you need space to park an RV during the job. I salvaged a couple of cook-tops to make home brew load banks. One was around 5500 watts and the other was about 6500 watts. Just flip on a few burners and watch my meter to see the numbers. BTW, some of those Onans had leaky intake manifolds because they are cast with a top plate and gasket. I also found that RV sets seemed prone to overheating issues and burned valves.... and not always on high hour units.

This doesn’t have to do with this video but you know how much I like anything Dometic. The Montana was getting warm with but A/Cs on but the Dometic wasn’t running. So I turn the vent on the bedroom unit and it was off. The air started coming out of the far vents at 32F. I’m leaving the vents on from now on even if I have the airs on.

Excellent video! Re: the hz reading. This is the "frequency" of the AC current. AC changes direction 60x per second. 12V DC current travels in one direction. 120VAC current travels in both directions, changing 60x per second (60hz).

Clean the slip rings regularly. Bad contact can kill the volt reg and that can kill the pc board.

You can do it any way you like, but I've always gone by the Minimum of 120/240 Volts with no load at 60 Hertz/Cycles. With that benchmark set, when the average Load is applied, it usually will fall into the +/- 2% Hertz/Cycles and the +/- 10% Voltage are within tolerance throughout the rated output of the Genset. My best guess as to why that unit wouldn't respond to the changes you made on the Governor Spring, is the Spring has lost its tension from age/heat cycles.

I believe you need about 73 volts or greater to keep the unit running. The pc board has a magnetic holding circuit that keeps the unit running once voltage is above that.

They are easy to make. In fact you can tune a generator to the load it takes by using the supplied unit. You can use a good meter to tell you just about everything you need to know.

As far as the Hz, life will go on. Only affect would be motors running slightly slower. The voltage is fine, as the 120 is a “nominal” number. Acceptable from 110 to 125 volts. Nice loadbank! No, I have no need for one. Another job well done Kenny! Good choice on Bill Hilly! Best wishes!

That's one side. The other side of that coin is lower frequency =more current. This is why VFDs work by tricking the power consumption by taking 60htz and jumping it to 120-180 thus reducing the need for higher voltage. and what the rv industry calls a soft start for ac units is well ill leave it at that. Soft starts are nothing more than a shaded pole and uses another cap to supplement that drop by injecting high voltage in short spurts. I'm not an rv tech by trade but I enjoy working on them, they are super simple including the generators.
@KevinCoop1
@KevinCoop1 27 дней назад
@@ctaylor114 A VFD changes the frequency, because it ramps up to speed when starting it lowers inrush amps. If it is run at lower frequency, it uses less power, because it does less work. I have not seen one that increases the motor to twice or three times normal speed though. By going to 120 and 180, that is what you are saying. A soft start is similar in that it reduces inrush current. The way it does that is it is a pulse width modulator. So, it turns the same voltage and amps on and off until the motor gets up to speed then stops the modulation.

What you will notice most when using generators and inverters is that your 120VAC clocks will be off. None of the generators or inverters are exactly 60Hz. The Alexa Dots and other products are still good for correct time and setting alarms as they use the internet for the time of day.
@donruhl1171

You could check the hertz accuracy of your meter by checking a power company supplied ac outlet. That should be within +/- 1/10 of a hertz (I think)

@@ctaylor114 I used kitchen cook-top (4-5 burners) and made up a harness. Small burners are usually 1500 watts and big ones are 2500 watts. You can double check that with an amp probe or look at the elements for wattage ratings.
