I love the "I fixed" series since it gives a new perspective on "bad movies." Instead of just saying a movie was bad or wasted potential Tyler actually shows how it can be improved which takes a lot more work than just pointing at the bad stuff in a movie.

In the film, they have a line “If Grace is there with you -- look in her memories -- she can show you the world we come from. There's no green there. They killed their Mother, and they're gonna do the same thing here.” I think this highlights the main philosophy a bit better. I think in order to capture the magic that the original script has, then the pacing for this one needs to really take time to hone in on the worldbuilding, because I think that the worldbuilding can offer a deeper empathy for not just the people but the forest, the foresr spirits, the forest life and the Mother Tree, as if Pandora is a character in its own right- like a mother IS home to her child.

The marine was promised new legs in the original story (hangar scene). So that personal dilemma already existed. But I agree the theme was a bit weak in the finally. Since he cared a lot about his avatar, his legs were not a big issue anymore for him. It was resolved when he married.
@harrydunkwu7655
@harrydunkwu7655 Год назад
This is a great retake on the Avatar story. However, you must recall the irony in the story's premise. A crippled man gets to have legs in the Avatar world! So giving Unobtanium healing powers only makes it less of a dilemma, because Jake wins both ways. Plus, he gets to have a shot at starting life again in this new world with legs compared to the old. So creating a dilemma for him is really difficult, except maybe bringing his brother back to life!

Hm, I think in your version of the story, it would fit even better thematically if the unobtanium wasnt a mineral, but was instead a substance _in the trees._ It gives a bit more credibility to the outright magical properties it has in your version, and also _forces_ humans to destroy the local ecosystem in order to get the unobtanium (unlike the mineral, you can't extract it via less destructive means), making it more impossible to humans and navi to cooperate and coexist peacefully even with the best of intentions. And, naturally, the biggest source of the resource is in that humongous tree the tribe lives in. And lets say that humans can't simply farm the trees because they require extraordinary amounts of time to grow and begin amassing unobtanium (Say, a thousand years), while humans need it _right now._

Very good! I think the story could be even better if instead of his legs not working, Jake has a terminal disease and is terrified of death. Maybe most people in the avatar project are in a similar situation, some short of "nothing left to lose" mental state. It would make his sacrifice all the more personal in the end, although it might bring up the debate that he is choosing the life of the natives over the lives of his own species

Just rewatched Avatar and I must say it was better than I remembered. It delivers its emotional beats very well. I do agree some of the characters are a bit simple. But other than not having much depth to them I don’t think it hurts the actual story too much. I completely agree with the fact that Jake get’s taken in to the tribe too easily, even though I think the floating plant seeds being attracted to him foreshadowing his ‘pure heart’ is a great idea in the film. But it does eliminate the possibility of a bit more tension and build-up. I think some of your ideas are very good, especially the ones adding more tension (and resolution) between him and Tsu Tey/the other navi. Also increasing his conflict by potentially having the cure for his legs be the very unobtanium itself. I think Jake as a character is very well designed to fit the story as is. Him being in a wheelchair really adds contrast to the freedom he experiences in his avatar. Also him being an ex marine and having lost his goal and drive. To have Jake be someone who is eager to explore new worlds I’m not so sure of. I think the fact that he doesn’t really care much for it initially really adds to his journey in discovering and understanding this new world. Making it all the more interesting. Another great idea is having Jake not be accepted by the Navi before the battle scenes. Having him fight for them even when they want nothing to do with him reinforces his genuine motivation. Especially if this ultimately means his own death. Which also flips his first belief of wanting to do anything in order to get the unobtanium and cure his legs. I still find it very difficult to say one idea is objectively better than another though, since these things don’t just add up but can also diminish other parts of the film. Either way I think it all proves how hard of a juggling act it is to tell a great story.

I do like your version, but I think you’re kind of reaching to make problems out of some elements of the original, particularly with Jake’s character. You make it sound like he’s deliberately stealing Nyteri from Tsutae and usurping rule of the clan because he wants those things. But the film makes it clear he has no intention of taking anything at the cost of others. He tells Nyteri that he won’t choose her as his mate unless she first chooses him, and he never tries to take over the clan from Tsutae, only offering to help the people with his knowledge of the humans’ tactics and technology if Tsutae will accept him. And he is adopted in by the people, it’s not like he declares himself one of them. Again, I like a lot of things you did, but it occasionally felt you were going to great lengths to construe problems out of the original.
@D0GBOOT
@D0GBOOT Год назад
I agree with this. I didn't like the claims that Jake 'took' Nyteri or 'stole Tsutae's woman', as this feels fairly misogynistic, implying that Nyteri has no agency and is a possession of the clan, rather than an individual in her own right.

07:14 - Havent seen the film in a while, but I really disagree: Jake doesn’t just ‘take’ Neytiri - they fall in love. It’s a mutual thing. And he doesn’t just take the place of clan leader - that’s something he earns by leading the defence against the humans, and through his selfless fighting. And you compare this behaviour to slaughtering navii and destroying the natural environment? It’s easy to see how the second thing is ‘taking’ but how is the first thing? That said, I agree the film has a ‘white saviour’ trope going on, and I think your video really improved the philosophical conflict and the characters. Also, I love your videos and keep doing what you do! 😄

I really hate the idea of "fixing" someone else's work. It's a done work with hundreds of sweat and tears. You can think of an alternate version of the film, but don't call it "fixed" version. Its such a pretentious way to put it. Yeah Avatar had flaws but so does any other movies out there. James Cameron is one of the most well known movie director/screen writer out there for a reason.

Yeah, everything can be improved with a bit of hindsight, but to think something needs to be "fixed" because they didn't understand it is silly. From a purely artistic standpoint, everything is perfect and broken all at once. It's subjective. There is a big plot hole in your version. Jake can get his real leg back if he helps humans to extract unobtanium. What will happen if he doesn't? He will get to live in a Navi body which is taller, stronger and most importantly has legs. So if he teams up with Navi he can live better on a greener and more beautiful planet as a King with a girlfriend. So obviously he will choose the Navi life. So, there is no dilemma.
@Felix-mp2vj

Not saying you're wrong here, but there's another, "quicker" way to fix "Avatar". First, I have to say the man-hours they all put in is overwhelming. The basic premise is Jake Sully as a Marine lost the use of his legs. His brother died, and so Jake took his place. Simple change: make the story about "belonging" for Jake. Suppose When Jake came home, his brother took care of him, or at least was going to until the date he left for "Pandora". Then he dies. [I have a twin sister]. Jake takes his place. Maybe he can find a place of "belonging" taking over for his brother. The military man, the capitalist and the scientist then take on different roles. Jake Sully when he first arrives fits in with the military man, that's what he knows. "Belonging" looks like at first to Jake like, "I'm home, doing what I was trained to do." The scientist takes him out into the jungle and he gets lost. Then the Na'vi decide to train him because he's a "warrior" - "JakeSully". JakeSully finds himself falling in love with Nat'ir'i, and things begin to change for him as he realizes the "belonging" he wants, he's found only with the Na'vi. The scientist also goes through a character arc, though I don't know how much of that was Sigourney Weaver. Look, James Cameron didn't turn every single military person bad.

Rather its about the outsider learning the beliefs of another culture and paying the ultimate price to be honored by that culture. Rather than the usual evil-westerners vs holy-natives things, it's more about different cultural differences. Or like you always say the Philosophical Conflict.
@mcclunky3093
@mcclunky3093 Год назад
I think that giving a legitimate reason for the humans to want to mine Unobtanium neuters the message of the movie, which is to point out that in the real capitalist world that we live in, all the extraction we've done has ultimately been only for the purpose of allowing for more extraction, at the cost of our own Pandora. James Cameron wasn't trying to make a movie that explores both sides of the issue of environmentalism, he was holding up a mirror to the insane world that we *actually* live in and saying "we need to fight against this". The name Unobtanium might be corny, but it's fitting in that the end goal of capital is unobtainable, no amount of exploitation will ever be able to satisfy its hunger.
@randomdude30
@randomdude30 Год назад
Brilliantly put. Came down to the comments section to write just this, but you articulated it better. The capitalist world in order to maximize its profits while reducing input costs, is always on the lookout for cheap energy. The Industrial Revolution and the Internet Age were both made possible because of the availability of electricity. But humankind's need for energy is insatiable and cheap energy is the rate limiting factor of progress. This in itself fuels this need for energy at any cost. Least of them being the welfare of an alien species and their emotions. Even on Earth many indigenous tribes have been uprooted (clearing of forests) and relocated willy-nilly for the construction of dams and other hydroelectric projects. Cameron's philosophical question in Avatar is, at what point does this mad pursuit of 'progress' become unacceptable. What gives humanity the right to rape and pillage the resources of a planet for their personal gains? Avatar in it's current form poses this philosophical conflict beautifully and holds a mirror to human society. It also shows what a handful of people with relatively primitive technology, can achieve, powered by their courage of conviction. Also, James Cameron, apart from being a writer-director is also a Physics major and a scientist in his own right. He won't just randomly assign magical properties to Unobtanium as some kind of cure all for all of humankind's woes. Sorry Tyler I don't agree with your so called fix.

The thing is about unobtainium is that there is already a bit of a detailed explanation of why it is so important but it’s just that this piece of lore wasnt implemented fully in the movie. The Earth essentially is a dystopian place undergoing population issues, ecological chaos, resource issues and most importantly-an energy crisis. Unobtainium is valuable because is a key to solving the energy crisis and you could say that these people who have took the effort to go to Pandora to mine unobtainium are doing this to save lives back home as you mentioned. Now the whole conquer and explore thing makes sense with the colonel along with the main corporate guy you made him into a nice character but now im also thinking what if you spice things up even more by saying that these people have family members or people that they have connections with back home. So all this effort is to save them back home. But yeah I respect the ideas you managed to implement I’m just worried on how Jake’s death would affect the rest four future movies.

Okay your argument about Jake "taking what he wants" is completely false. Jake did not take anything from anyone. He doesn't steal Nyterri from Tsutey he specifically says "I've already chosen but this woman MUST ALSO CHOOSE ME" if Nyterri had rejected his advances he would have let it go and been done with it. He mated with her because they both wanted each other not just him wanting her. Jake doesn't steal leadership of the clan away from Tsutey either. He leads the defense force against the humans because he's a former Marine, he likely has more combat experience against other live people than any of them, it'd be kinda stupid if he wasn't leading that fight. But more importantly Tsutey was always going to be clan leader, only reason Jake ended up with that position is because he died in fact there's even a deleted scene where Jake is with Tsutey in his final moments and he formally trusts Jake to lead and take care of their people. Finally, I'm sure Jake likely asked to use the tree to merge his mind with his avatar body, just because we don't see it doesn't mean it didn't happen. Not only that but I'm sure he earned the goddess Aewahs respect after he pleaded for help with leading the Navi in the final fight. Jake has nothing but respect for this world and it's people, think about what he says "If Grace is with you, look into her memories and see the world we come from. There's no green there, they killed their mother, and they're gonna do the same here. More sky people are going to come, like a rain that never ends....unless we stop them. You chose me for something, I will stand and fight.... you know I will, but I need a little help here" Nothing but an honest, humble plea for help and guidance. How can anyone think this is someone who takes whatever he wants? Overall that comment was extremely untrue and misleading. Avatar is a much better film than people give it credit for.

I'll give this reworking a look but I still doubt I'll ever watch "Avatar" again. That whole mass slaughter set piece with the attack on the tree is way too intense and traumatizing for me. Fix that and I'll consider rewatching. Otherwise Cameron can go and you-know-what.

8:00 your premise is wrong. Drawing a parallel between the big corporations motivations and lengths they will go to to get what they want with Jake is pretty disingenuous… I also don’t get why you had to mention his race but I’ll ignore that for now. Jake didn’t “Take” anything. He was let into the clan with guidance, followed that guidance and then had a change of heart to help the indigenous people.

Presumably, Tyler, the motive the doctors shared doesn't mean much to you and those of similar dispositions do to complex factors, though factors which would lead to the invasion of such a world, a land, as this film depicted; as our own history has depicted. It's safe to say, in story, if their were three sides to a protest of these off world excavations, that their would be: one who was for, one against, and one neutral. Where would you fall in this? Why does this matter? Because the settlers of America were not just "conquer" or "Pale Faced Demons" they were people with a muse, mien, and milieu, which culminated in their machinations for conquering. A conquering power may not ever see or empathize with another until they have faced the same, similar, or severely different conflict. The victims of invasion are not the only ones who can see the value of a healthy environment, the doctor saw it, many fans saw it, the Na'vi could see their sentient planet better than we. Why is it ok for Jake to take what he wants? Because while people and communities posses objective and subjective desires which may not align, the overwhelming desire Jake desired aligned with that of the Na'vi; whereas the overwhelming desire of the Humans went against the Na'vi. Tyler... You should be able to see this. Though your tone expresses a hint of disillusioned dismay... The absolute delimma is, what I would agree, that Jake was depicted as being a better leader that any of the Na'vi males. But here where the human condition v. Inhuman condition lies. What he brought in experience and knowledge of humanity could be and would be akinned to how a woman selects a mate - hypergamy. Sure, the Na'vi are big, strong, fast, and skilled fighters, though as we could see, that rejected humanity. This stands as a key weakness here, even once they let Jake in. If a group hope to prevail, they observe and analyze their enemy, adapt to and adopt from without losing themselves. Humanity is not the form it's the way of the spirit. ✨🧚‍♀️Oooo 🧚‍♂️✨, I know... But it's true. How can one write about, to or for their audience if they don't know them. You're talking about a reality where most don't know who or what they are, so... Study. Study and you realize how spiritual humanity is. Once you grasp then you will see, Na'vi is more akin to let's say "Earthling" than it is to how they cohabitate with their own kind. Inhumanity is an apathetic state of being which is quite nihilistic and sadistic. The line between a river known by many for millennial taking their share and an individual or small group fencing it off, bottling it up, and selling it back to those who "owned" it. If my thoughts have flowed in the way I intended them to, think about what I've stated here. The better you know what breeds life, The greater you can write a story conserving or destroying it. Because that's really what every story is about. Do you feel like you're dying working in that cubicle, or are you one of those individuals who find it exhilarating to work in that cubicle?

The way you phrase Jake's actions as "taking" is incorrect. Jake's integration into the Na'vi culture is only due to the permission of Eywa, the supernatural force that the Na'vi worship that is connected to every lifeform on their planet. He doesn't just force his way into it.

(1) Neytiri didn't spare Jake because he has a "strong heart." She spared him because, when she was literally about to take him out with her bow when a forest spirit landed on her arrow, causing her to take pause and rethink her decision. She later decides to take him to meet her father and mother when many of these same "spirits" land on Jake, which she takes as a sign that he is different than the others. (2) It's not called "Unobtanium." That's just the word used by the RDA in the film because its scientific name is too long and its Na'Vi name is too hard to pronounce ("lingtskxe") (3) Calling Dr. Augustine's arguments against the RDA and their mercenaries as vague and saying you don't understand how it impacts the story just means you didn't understand the story. Everything Augustine says is essentially the religion of the Na'Vi. That'd be like watching a movie about the crusades and stating that you don't understand the importance of discussing religious beliefs or how those beliefs might impact the story of someone who's having those beliefs challenged. The humans spent an unholy amount of time and money to travel to a distant world so that they can make even MORE money by harvesting the minerals they need to corner the market of space travel back home, and they're willing to uproot, and even genocidally eradicate the natives of this world in order to get what they want. The only thing really standing in their way is the scientists who serve as PR for this corporation back home, because, to quote the movie 'Congo', "No one wants to be seen on National Geographic standing next to a dead gorilla." (4) You said, "It doesn't make sense that Jake would try to talk with the Na'Vi after stating he didn't think they'd ever move." It makes perfect sense. If you're tied to a chair and I tell you I'm going to kill your dog and there's nothing you can say to stop me, are you going to just accept that and let me kill your dog in silence, or are you going to still TRY to get me to change my mind? It's called pleading and it makes perfect sense. (5) Your biggest hangups about the story seem to stem from a place of appropriation and the fact that Jake is a white guy moving in on an indigenous people. It's a dishonest place of bias to see the film this way as the actual message is, culture's aren't based on what you are, but what you believe, which is why you can have someone from another race/species standing up for something alien to them (literally or figuratively). This theme isn't a new one. We've seen it with Dances with Wolves, with Enemy Mine, and a slew of others over the years. (6) Jake didn't "take" Neytiri. She gave herself to him. Tsu'Tey didn't attack Jake because of what happened at the tree. They were never cool with one another, not until the final act of the film when Jake earns his respect by uniting the clans under the wings of the Toruk. He attacked Jake because Jake and Ney'tiri slept together. He could tell by how Ney'tiri was dressed that she'd gone through the ceremony of mating. And you'll notice Tsu'Tey doesn't say, "You mated with MY woman!" He asks, "You mated with THIS woman?" meaning that he doesn't care who he mated with, just that he slept with anyone at all since he's always seen Jake as an outsider and only entertained Jake's study of their people at the request of the chief. Mother of God, man, I'm only like 7 minutes in and it's clear you didn't "watch" this movie. You did, however, succeed in getting me to comment on your video which will boost the algorithm and whatnot, so kudos for that, but the arrogance you put forth on thinking you can "fix" a 3 billion dollar award winning film is mind-blowing. Maybe focus on your own writing before you bother yourself with fixing someone else's.

While I loved the visuals, action, and James Horner's musical score, the characters were pretty shallow and its environmental messages come off as ham-fisted, condescending, and pretty hypocritical. It's like, "if you cut down trees for profit, you're a terrible person" and yet, this movie had a budget of $237 million. You know how many trees they'd be cutting down to print that much money?

So the environmentalists will have to keep their mouths shut and never make their case because of the environmental cost? That makes no sense. I don't particularly like this movie that much but it seems like your interpretation is deeply flawed. Jake didn't "take" anything, by saying that he did, you are essentially disregarding the na'vi's individual choices. Doing so implies that the na'vi are too stupid to realize that Jake is somehow being tyrannical... I think that anyone who looks at the film objectively can see that's a twisted argument. You are portraying Jake's actions as some form of cultural appropriation, when in reality its cultural assimilation. Overall this video seems like you are projecting some sort of real world racial lens on a movie that is essentially about taking care of the environment and placing importance on other cultures. It was still well made and overall entertaining, but in the future you might want to try and analyse your viewpoint thoroughly before committing to it.
