I would anticipate that PPF would be the best move. It’s a film over the paint itself. But once a year isn’t often at all 😂

Beautiful Model Y! My rule of thumb on all of this is PPF is to protect your paint from scratches and rock chips. Ceramic coating doesn't do that. Ceramic coating protects the paint from bird droppings, tree sap, and water spots so it always looks glossy and clean (think of it as a semi-permanent wax). It makes washing it so much easier too. Hopefully they did a ceramic coat on your wheels too...that really helps with keeping brake dust from sticking. If money is no issue, the best option would be to get a PPF and then a ceramic coat on top of that film.
@RyanShawtech
@RyanShawtech 4 года назад
Yeah, PPF is ideal. Money is currently the issue and why I’m waiting, but I desperately want to get it soon!
@rohitzambre
@rohitzambre 3 года назад
Shouldn't it be the other way around -- ceramic coat first and then the PPF since the ceramic coat needs to chemically bond with the paint while the PPF is a physical barrier?
@BecauseTesla
@BecauseTesla 3 года назад
@@rohitzambre Nope, it's the other way around. Think about what each one does. You wouldn't need a ceramic coat at all if you're just going to put a PPF on top of it. You put the PPF on first to protect the paint and then ceramic coat on top of that to keep the car looking clean, shiny, and repel dirt, tree sap, bird droppings, etc. The ceramic coat also bonds with the PPF. Some brands of ceramic coat make a special version specifically to be used on top of PPF.

Both my wife and I’s Teslas (2018 X 100D and 2018 S P100D) had similar issues with chipped/missing paint in corners where body panels meet, clearly damage done during the build process and then still passed final inspection. Given that both were well over $100,000, that’s simply unacceptable

I am getting PPF right away. That is what I have on my model 3 and that has saved my car....have had people open up their doors onto my car, ram shopping carts or similar things into my car, and had someone swipe my front with their car. All of those incidences would have scratched my paint pretty bad, but the PPF absolutely saved my paint from those scratches. I will take a look at my Y when we get it.

Glad I got the advice from my PPF guy to tell Tesla NOT to touch the car prior to delivery. I got lucky with pretty good paint on my Model 3. But I still had fit and finish issues I had to work out. Even today quality control on a Tesla is a roll of the dice. Still worth putting up with. Can't see driving anything else.

I also ceramic coated my Model Y. And though it looks great, it does NOT protect the paint. you can still get chips from rocks or road debris. If you want paint protection, a PPF should be installed with ceramic coating on top of that if you desire. cool video, I recommend getting yourself a power washer, they are fairly cheap and foam cannons are, as you said, very satisfying to use lol
@RyanShawtech
@RyanShawtech 4 года назад
Well it protects the paint in the way that a wax or sealant would but actually lasts. PPF is what’ll protect from scratches and such. I definitely want to get a pressure washer when I can. I have a foam cannon for a normal hose but it just isn’t the same

Right on, semi-protection we'll say. If I could do it over I'd have gotten at least a front end wrap put on before the coating. Too late now unless I strip it off or wait until it wears out in a couple years

Don't get a pressure washer just for this. Go to a local self-service car wash. Here in Washington state we have Brown Bear, it's cheap, has all the materials, and it's super convenient (zero set up, maintenance, or clean up). Just park the car, take the hose - set it to foam, water, high pressure wash, etc... and spray away.

Ceramic coating will not protect against rock chips so at least a partial (hood, front quarter panels, side mirrors) PPF should be done. That should cost about $1500. I detail my own car. The paint is so good and hard on my 2000 BMW M Coupe in Immola Red that just going over it with a one step polish made it look like deep red water. By the way, clay is abrasive so you don't want to use it on any area that already feels slick to the touch.

@@RyanShawtech I stand corrected. It's more like $2000. Ceramic coating makes it harder for the PPF to adhere. The ideal is to ceramic coat over the PPF. I learned all those paint correction steps by watching the right people on RU-vid. Then I spent $3000 on tools, chemicals, and microfiber rags. I keep two cars looking like new. It's work, but it's rewarding. It's possible to use a polymer spray sealant and renew it 3-4x a year and the car will look great. It's important to keep the car washed....at home. A one bucket, not two bucket method, using multiple wash mitts is the way to go. Look at RU-vid videos by Dallas Paint Correction.

From the videos I've seen, I don't plan on letting Tesla touch it after delivery. Elon: How about fixing this mess!!!!! Thanks for the video and looks like you hooked up with the right detailer. Will Giga Berlin raise the Bar - fingers crossed. Tesla are smart the obviously know the finish on the Cars are lacking, no point having best tech this and best batter pack that if the Customer is looking at issues and disappointed. The engineering seems let down by the fit and finish and that needs addressed, it’s probably an issue born out of this needing to pump out silly numbers of Cars at any cost.

Just hate to let it go for a song! 12 year old G35 that's a better car today then any new car previously purchased. Hopefully, paint issues will improve when they're up an running again. Right now in California the DMV is closed for business so I cannot even get an expired license renewed, which is an issue when buying a new car. Nothing that affects reliability, everything that's been fixed has been cosmetic or an annoyance, but it has been a *lot*. Both headlights, both front upper control arms, steering rack, some chrome trim (SC damaged while replacing windshield), the back window (back when there were stress crack issues), had to have basically the whole car repainted, dashboard has had to be touched up due to damage from the SC, both front a-pillar covers had to be replaced (originally because they were warped, a common issue with early 3's, but then needed replacing because while fixing the dashboard, they damaged the pillars)...i think that's it.

Hey Ryan, I'm mid video here so sorry if you cover it later, but just so you know ceramic coating will not protect against scratches and rock chips like PPF will. Ceramic coating is basically just a permanent wax coating (helps keep dirt off, and lets water bead off, etc). Also, it is more difficult to PPF over top of a ceramic coating (if not impossible). So it is generally better to PPF first, and then ceramic coat (if you plan on doing both that is). Otherwise they'll probably strip the ceramic coating, apply PPF, and then charge you to ceramic coat again.
@RyanShawtech

I wonder how ceramic coating compares to simply doing a wash with a good soap that has wax in it (like Chemical Guys), wax washes off yeah, but here in California we get rain 1 month out of the year... and if you wash your car once every few weeks you will definitely have the wax on it the entire time from just doing the wash. I feel like wrapping/PFF arent worth it, as you can just wrap or repaint the car for probably around the same amount of money (maybe even cheaper) by the time the factory paint actually starts wearing through or having issues. I did not do anything to my factory paint (and I have black) and its been perfectly fine. Also, a note on the wax washing off part, in our So Cal weather, it definitely lasts upwards a year, at least mine does.
@RyanShawtech

It’s essentially the same, but doesn’t wear off. Wax will wear off in the sun in California. If you wash once a week and wax, I suppose it could be the same. Sounds like a lot of work haha. Took my Y to Clear Auto Bra LLC (St louis) for full coverage XPEL PPF with ceramic over that. Took three days but outstanding results. They fixed a couple issues in the process. Couldn’t be happier. Several other cars they were working on were 3-5 times the price of mine so it was like going to a upscale car museum! Pretty neat. ****Also word of warning about the rear cargo door. Ryan Shaw I’ve found 6 square shaped patterns of what looks like adhesive residue on the inside of the glass roof (not really that noticeable unless looking up through the roof in sunlight). I assume there was some protective covering attached on the inside of the glass after it was built and for transport. I’m wondering if I can safely use rubbing alcohol to try to remove. I assume the dealer prep folks were supposed to take care of this prior to releasing the car to me. Any thoughts on this - did you notice anything like this in yours? They are evenly spaced on both sides of the glass in pairs 2 forward 2 middle 2 aft. About 3 inch square I’d estimate. The manual has a lot of restrictions on what to use to clean the interior including the glass....

Ryan, some questions about protecting the paint on your car. As you have just bought the car the paint was quite new and not hardened fully I presume. Did the people who did this job warn you about the paint being fresh? Does it make any difference applying a ceramic coat on a fresh coat of paint or on a hardened paint? Did applying a ceramic coating so soon have any impact on your warranty?

These sorts of issues with the paint and build quality are my biggest anxieties with getting my Y. The prospect of receiving a brand new car and then immediately having to take it into the shop for days or weeks and just the extra hassle fills me with all sorts of dread. At this point it sounds like 50/50 chance you'll have a broken door/seat/lift gate but 100% chance you'll have paint issues. Is it even worth sending to Tesla to fix the paint? It sounds like you would just be better off sending it straight to a detailer.
@RyanShawtech
@RyanShawtech 4 года назад
Yeah. Those things won't be broken, but might be misaligned (like my back seats), and need to get it fixed at service. I still absolutely love the car though...Autopilot alone is worth it for these things. I think that is what most owners are willing to sacrifice. A couple (free) service appointments to have the driving experience in the car. But ultimately they need to not have any sacrifices. In my case it was worth sending to Tesla to fix the paint because they actually had to add touch up paint where it was missing, and they needed the right color, but it was obvious with swirl marks where they fixed it. So if the detail shop has the right paint to do it, then it would probably be worth just doing the detail shop.

With the Model Y being my third Tesla I've come to accept the paint issues from them. But I've also never been one to obsess over a paint finish on a car which is daily driven. That being said, I've always had full frontal PPF (Xpel) applied to every one of my Teslas from day one. To me a chip or scratch from flying road debris is much more annoying then swirl marks that really aren't noticeable from a few feet away...but that's just me. I haven't seen any paint issues on my new Tesla Model 3 (white) just from watching closely around the car. If i can't see anything, that's fine for me. A professional could maybe see many small paint issues, but i don't care AT ALL. If i can't see them, where's the problem? I have the car to drive it, not to always search for tiniest paint issues. Maybe with a process like yours the paint could be much better, but after 1 year of driving the chance of getting small rock chips or something else is pretty high (i already have one at the front having the car for only 5 months). So sooner or later your car will have scratches and noticeable paint issues. Of course, your car looks amazing now, but spending hundreds of dollars just that you know you don't have any paint issues, is nothing for me. That's my opinion on this topic :)

I see this method of snow foaming a lot in American detailing videos and it still makes me uncomfortable. The whole purpose of snow foaming is to 'pre wash'. It loosens the dirt and pulls it off the car as you say, but to then go straight at it with a mitt without any prior rinsing is a bad a idea. You're just dragging that loosened dirt across the paint.

A new car requires absolutely no mechanical decontamination (clay bar) and there is no benefit of foaming it 3 times, (the reason to do this is to soften any dirt and dust so that it will not scratch when the wash mitt is applied) they foamed it repeatedly so that they could charge you more, because they know people who buy Tesla’s don’t know much about cars, don’t go back there. Spend 5 minutes watching Chicago auto pros, the detail geek, chromatic auto detailing, etc and they all foam one time and refuse to clay a brand new car.

I was wondering about the cost too. It's already a big stretch just to be able to afford the car before adding $1000 to $2000 for paint correction, ceramic coating, and PPF seems restrictive. It sure looks great though. The actual material cost doesn't look that high but the amount of labor needed to apply every thing is what really makes this expensive. No way to avoid that unless you do it yourself and that doesn't look very friendly for beginners. I wonder if you can recoup the extra $4k (plus interest) spent for the red color ($2K), corrections, and protective coatings on the resale value. The red color really does look fantastic though.
