Hellfire was one of my most anticipated records of the year so I of course I thought it would be fitting to share the first listen of it with my dad. Will he give Hellfire the seal of approval?

Black Midi is an experimental rock / post-punk / avant-prog-jazz band that has quickly became the favorite band of a lot of people. Their album Cavalcade was one of my favorite releases last year and Of Schlagenheim is one of my favorite albums of all time. The band, consisting of Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton and Morgan Simpson, is one of the most talented bands I've heard come out of this decade.
This album is no different, Hellfire improves on all aspects of their sound. I was hooked from the first single, Welcome to Hell. After hearing other amazing tracks off this record like Eat Men Eat, Sugar/Tzu, The Race is About to Begin and 27 Questions. It is no question that the band is continuing to put out banger after banger.

@@sean.anthony6044 I think it's having an appreciation for the theatrics and story telling like he said at the end. Having lyrics in your face throughout an album experience, especially if you're listening to something that is sonically not in your wheelhouse, gives you a nice foundation for the experience. Plus this album, while actually their most musically complex, is still fairly accessible due to the obvious associations one can make between the lyrics and the tone/instrumentation. So you just have to be slightly open minded I feel to be entertained in a basic way here (not a dig at dad or black midi!).

Marlene Dietrich was my favorite song in Cavalcade so i found it very interesting that they returned not once, not twice, but three times to this theme of the relationship between entertainer and audience. 27 Questions especially has been consistently made me a bit emotional, the idea of one of the hippest rock bands right now ending their album kinda saying "ok, but how long will it take for us to seem cringe?" Is pretty potent, with that imagery of an old artist desperately trying to get a last round of applause, literally dying for it, and getting nothing more than ridicule. Anyways yeah album good

I could see why someone would prefer schlag but their jazz rock/prog stuff is a more fitting direction for the band than their noisy industrial stuff imo. Greep's vocals really shine on this album, tbh he is a great singer. Also the storytelling on this album is ambitious but they pull it off so well. Definitely their best album SO FAR but I can see them topping this.

Dude my jaw was broad open during race, crazy song. I love how your dad genuinely tries to enjoy the album haha (and eventually really do). This album is hard to place cuz is absolutely more ambitious than the two previous and is more conceptual but I just love Cavalcave too much to place it under Hellfire so i'd say is a tie.

My father would have LOVED Black Midi. It's like having your best buds from childhood onwards all in the same room partying. I can here threads of Zappa, Alex Harvey, King Crimson here and there, even Blood Sweat & Tears, the jazz fusion is divine. The cabaret bridging in there is also fab. Woke me up again. I'm so glad I heard this, it's the most exciting album I've heard in years and years. And Years. I'm probably not much younger than your dad.,

As much as I love this album, I can’t help the fact that it didn’t made me cry, “Still” is such a beautiful piece and everything else is super fun to listen to. But as it goes, the search for an album that can move your father to tears must continue.

TBE 4 sure. This might have just beaten out Schlagenhiem as their no. 1 spot for me, like your dad said, the story telling was excellent, I think thats what pushed it over the edge even if it doesnt have as many bangers that can stand on their own like with Schlagenhiem. Ya they definitely upped their story telling a lot with this album. I feel like Hellfire works more cohesively as an album than Schlagenheim but idk Schlagenheim has sooo many bangers. I agree with you on Welcome to Hell, one of my favorite songs of the year fs. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

I got tickets to see Midi this September in Maryland and then Virginia on back to back nights. Its astonishing how they're becoming one of the best bands ever in such a short period of time.

My fav album of the year so far, and I think black midi's best album to date. Although I love their first 2, there are a song or two that is just ok and I skip from time to time. This album is killer from start to finish and as it tells an overarching story, it flows so well. Also helps its only 38 mins and just flies by. Glad your Dad enjoyed it, it's certainly quirky enough for a Tom Waits fan!

Hellfire is unbelievably good, it's only been out for like a week and I've listened to it more than any other album that's come out this year. I don't know if anyone has suggested this yet but I think having your dad react to something from Arcade Fire would be cool, I think he might enjoy some of their stuff. Great video!

To me this is a crazy take. I'm not British but have been living in the UK for over 12 years, and I feel like the post-punk revival movement that's been happening in the past few years continues to foster some of the most creative and boundary-pushing music in rock, not just from the UK but from anywhere.

@@el_mal_de_ojo It has its peaks but there’s a lot of valleys too, and I think the sound in general is getting kind of stale. Listening to Yard Act’s album flipped a switch in my head where I immediately thought “there’s nothing of value left in this scene”.

I know what you mean a lot of that sound has been done to death but Black Midi have never had a lot in common musically with the standard post punk revival stuff, they just kinda end up getting lumped in with it for the sake of convenience by the music press. They are completely unique, the sound has more to do with prog and jazz rock than anything.
