Inspired by Turning The Tables, I made my dad listen to the money store by death grips. My dad hasn't heard anything like this in his life so having him listen to this was such a wild experience.
Death Grips is an experimental, industrial hip-hop group that is pretty much the wildest thing anyone can experience when it comes to music. The Money Store is Death Grips debut album and this is a Dad Reacts to Death Grips. This is a Death Grips Review. Sort of? I guess my Dad Reviews Death Grips in this video. But at the end of the day, this is a Death Grips Reaction. do you guys think that's enough key search phrases? lol

love this video, obviously. Gotta start getting more into the lyrics though man, not that u aren't but separate yourself from the meme culture side of their fanbase and look into the heart breaking and mind bending stories and concepts he deliberately brings up in his lyrics and you'll find a lot of beauty and release through life experiences in them. Very deep and brief flashes of wisdom and poetry and the songs will make so much more sense to you along with the titles even, often times. Your dad is actually doing a good job of reading into it more, and found myself relating to his interest in the lyrics, meaning, and backgrounds of the artists and the art. You can tell he has some experiential wisdom. Great video!

Ya I completely agree with you. It's a habit that I need to break but I always find myself being more interested in how the songs are made, the production side of things and how the song sounds overall. I come from a music production background so that might be why but the lyrics are there for a reason! and I need to start analyzing lyrics better. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

I always find it funny how showing death grips to your parents is made out to be such a big deal, because when I showed my dad death grips he immediately liked them. Turns out he was a fan of experimental stuff like NIN and Aphex Twin back in da day, which explains a lot, especially the fact that I never even saw Death Grips as weird either, I just immediately thought they were cool the first time I heard Takyon 💀 Like father like son i suppose

I’ve always wanted to do this with my parents but I’m sure they would throw their headphones off and disown me before get got was over. Anyway, it was fun to see your dad actually pay attention and even be interested enough to look into the artists and lyrics a bit to try to understand it better. I always respect people who give things an honest chance before just writing it off as something they don’t like.

Appreciate you read the lyrics while listening. DG always published their lyrics w their albums, I assume mostly because they assume they’re easy to mishear and miss in the mix. The lyrics are just as powerful as the beats tho

I feel like his delivery is so striking to new listeners that they immediately assume he's just saying nonsense, and a lot of times it's pretty indecipherable but like most of his lyrics i feel like if another rapper said them, while it wouldn't sound as cool people wouldn't think it's nonsense at all, like how does "Forensics on that wild goose" not make sense, you can literally sit with it for 10 seconds and be like "ok, wild goose = wild goose chase, forensics as in crime forensics, i.e. he can't be found, he's dangerous, etc," which is mirrored pretty clearly in the lines before it I know it's different because I've had like over a decade to sit on this band but it's so weird when people insinuate that he's not a good rapper when outside of his shouted delivery, his vocabulary, and the topics he works with, he's pretty much following the syllabus to a t and excelling at it too

Just out of curiosity, did your dad grow up in a catholic traditional family? Glad you're showing him confronting ideas, but maybe a tip would be to push him a bit harder when it comes to his reductive views on music and song-writing lol One thing I found is teaching orchestral listening to non-musicians really helps with understanding song concepts and ambiance, instead of just focusing on one element of a song such as the lyrics.
