And I believe that your critiques are very important, not only for us to understand the reality behind the "reality show", but also for Rokas and the other organizers if they want to repeat the experience. I don't think anybody on Earth thinks violence is always the solution. I think you need to be more specific to make very much sense. Nobody ever thinks violence is the solution if you want to eat a ham sandwich or visit a beach. I am sure, in fact, that most people rarely think violence is a solution to a given situation. However, if somebody is walking around with a knife, and is willing to attack other people, then violence is most certainly always the solution, though that solution involves highly trained men with guns and a lot of support. An unarmed person, taken by surprise by a knife wielder, is not involved in that solution and for them, the only sensible option is the one most likely to allow them to survive. When a knife wielder is walking the streets then violence is always the solution and there will rarely be another, though the average unarmed citizen ought to not be involved in it.

Great video Ramsey, thank you for sharing your perspective with us. I appreciate an unredacted view of how the scenarios were for the participants, and your thought process through out. There is a lot to learn here. As for those saying that Ramsey is giving excuses for his performance... First, all of these gentlemen did fantastic. Most of the people pointing fingers in the comments section would have been INJURED in the first event, let alone come out with the upper hand. It's easy to armchair after the fact. Ramsey did especially well, and probably had the perspective that most closely resembled real life self protection. We have to remember that, despite the overlap in physical skills between sport fighting and self protection, the goals are different. In a competition, your goal is to defeat your opponent - you cannot defend your way to victory. The goal in a self protection situation is the opposite - minimize damage received to yourself or other victims. If this is supposed to be a "self defense championship", then the goal should not be to BEAT the attacker, it should be to avoid being beaten. If you can control and attacker until they give up, help arrives, or you can run - you've won. Striking them at that point may just land you in jail or prison for aggravated assault. Damage dealt should be a far cry away from the primary goal of minimizing damage received. As a final note, it's curious to see how many people are claiming that Ramsey is giving excuses. Ramsey has always spoken his mind, talked about things that we viewers may not know about (remember the videos where he talked about crummy, rigged fights in the past? I remember), and been an open book. Additionally, it's really important to consider our own limitations in real life. We like to think that we're superhuman, but old injuries, the clothes and environment we're in, our less-than-perfect understanding of the situation at hand, and many other things are important. Ramsey talked about his shoes coming off. How many of us have even TRAINED in shoes, rather than just barefoot on the mats? How many of us leave the gym or dojo and are feeling ROUGH after some intense training? Would we be ready to fight for our life at that exact moment? I won't go on and on. Ramsey, you and the gang did great. Thanks to all of you for putting your lives on hold, and your health on the line, so we can watch this series.
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey Год назад
Another note on shoes coming off. It happened to Icy Mike a number of times too. He was surprised, because he always makes it a point to wear shoes outside that he can fight in, just in case- but when his shoes came off multiple times during some of the scuffles, he started changing the way he tied his shoes so they would stay on. Now I wonder if Mike will make a video on tactical shoe tying fo’ da streetz! (I know it sounds funny, but as far as practical self defense goes, it matters a lot)

Handing over the wallet was one of my favorite moments from episode 2. Also, Jeff Chan's reaction to being able to do that. Having watched both the breakdowns so far my main takeaways are: 1. For their normal training sessions I understand not being completely aware of what you might be facing. However, as this has been gamified into a championship rules, at least towards scoring should be clearer. 2. When are we getting this on Netflix / Amazon / Whoever with full production teams, and these in depth commentaries from each participant, because between you and Icy Mike there have been so really great additional insights, and the core content has been really enjoyable.

This was very well said. A few of us back here in Canada have been watching it, and we love it. It was still a great idea, but we also think it had alot of slip ups and could use improvement. Here's what some of our thoughts were. First, you couldn't be more right about how some of those scenerious worked. Whether it was giving your wallet in a passive manner, or keeping the guy pinned. A few of us have done bouncing and have also utilized this strategy in public, unfortunately, and there's nothing more safe or legal. I bounced at a bar for a while, and have had grown men start to cry once they calmed down after a while in a pin, and start explaining how their wife just left them, he can only see the kids on weekends, he's paying insane child support, and she took everything basically. It hits you pretty hard hearing that, but it still doesn't give him any right to get angry at someone in the bar and try start a fight. Once explained, usually they agree, and they still have to go, and might be banned for a month. The best place he could of been was pinned. Not getting a broken limb, or nose, or anything. They deserve a chance. Than there are the guys that are nothing but trouble. They don't calm down, they think it's funny when you let them back up after they pretend to be good, and as much as you momentarily like the idea of them having something to mend the next day, the best place for them is still on the ground pinned until the cops arrive if their too much to handle getting out the door. We were all big dudes, but than theres was some that were paul varelans big. It happened if other guys were busy, or i the guy you were dealing with was already outside but just kept trying to damage stuff. There were many examples of when points should have been given, or even those big guys forfitting. One was Matt's theoretical kicks. That guy chose to follow him up a ladder with a knife. "He could of stabbed or cut his foot though if he tried to kick him." 🤯 Are you flipping kidding me!? No! In a life or death situation, your going to have an adrenaline dump and not feel a single thing. If that goon looses his footing or grip on the ladder from your shoving, which can happen very easily, especially if a person waits until they start to actually climb onto the base, than that person is dropping a long way down. As soon as Matt mentioned the kicks when that guy was in a close proximity, it should of counted as him being taken out of the comp. There were lots. I think we all know that. Most were explained here. If this were ever re done, than make it a real self defense situation. Not going super realistic, but seriously, alot more. Wash off markers and white shirts work just fine, with some swimming Goggles for the knife drill. We did that once a week usually in our Sambo gym back in the day. Fun, but super hard drill. No other padding needed. Or even loose the swimming Goggles and just have it so theirs no head shots with the knife, which is fairly realistic, have a guy sign a waiver saying it's his own risk if something happens. Loose all of that extra padding though. For the bat drill, use a pool noodle still, but just inset a half inch rubber dowel in the centre of it for weight and firmness. Guy gets a clean hit with that or something than it's over. A few of us know about these self defense schools that get a person all armored up and that play around, but that's not self defense on da streetz. Far from it. The safest, yet most realistic way this could go it like this. Wear a mouth guard, nobody needs to cut up their hand or loose teeth, no cup, no other gear, do it outside in a back ally behind a bar or business, during the day or at night, when things really happen. Rent off the area and have it blocked off, and have everyone dressed in what their casual cloths would be. That includes sweat pants or shorts. Whatever they honestly usually wear in public. Their regular shoes etc. Than see how it goes over, and ya, have it so guys are really swinging. I'm sure there'd be some indepth waiver signing, but have it so their really ready for this sort of thing. If I was a bad guy, I'd be ready to take a shot and vice versa, it makes all the difference when it's bare knuckle aswell. Mostly because one thing this tournament is lacking the most in those drills is an escape line. When outside doing these drills, have lines a person can cross running to be safe from the assault. I suppose there could be scenarios where there could be that option, and than not, or just have it so that options alot more difficult. Alot could of been improved. Still love watching the show, and honestly, something like that should be available for people to participate in. Everyone I know that's seen it all agree they'd love to do some of those tasks for fun. The bus bash, the hide and go Stab team drill. I know personally myself and some guys think we're pretty slick with the strategy we would have after watching this example of it and conspiring. If we get enough people together, we might actually play a personal game of that if we can rent a warehouse out. Something like this would potentially do great as a business done professionally. I'd go on but I better get back to work. Great video Ramsey.

On one hand, I feel that having very strict and defined rules will make this event feel too competitive, and as you mentioned, knowing what's going to happen is not in the spirit of self defense. There is a fine line they didn't satisfie. The orginisers could had gave them their philosophy of what they think about what counts as winning in a self defense scenario and giving points accordingly. In my opinion not giving any direction and giving them only the safety rules would be better.
@MrMagnaniman
@MrMagnaniman Год назад
There are a few key examples from the three episodes that prove your point so far. Matt's "theoretical kicks" should have allowed him to earn a stalemate. If the simulated attackers are relying upon his reluctance to kick them down a 20-foot ladder or fight on narrow scaffolding, we're kind of losing the plot. That resolution wasn't very "realistic" and it also wasn't very satisfying as a viewer. The equipment malfunctions are another good example. It's something that really has nothing to do with "self defense" or "realistic scenarios" and it's also not very entertaining to watch someone get pounded when their helmet has spun a full 180. When simulating reality, it's important to have some well-defined rules and victory conditions. And that's to ensure that it's still a simulation and not reality. If people keep escalating the force they're using, it gets dangerous. When it gets dangerous, people either get hurt and/or, hopefully, we have people tapping out in situations they might have been able to win, which, again, is unsatisfying as a spectator.

Actually as a short stocky guy, built like a Tolkein dwarf, I size up bigger opponents by they're physicality, conditioning and skills. In some ways shortness gives a lot of advantages on the inside and grappling and as we say in the south, some people are big for nothing lol.
@liammullen2144
@liammullen2144 Год назад
Yeah I'm a shorter guy, I'm only about 5'9 but I weigh between 195-200lbs most of the time and I am pretty lean. Most people are shocked at my weight and don't believe me until I step on a scale (or they feel me lol) I've always been able to bully other guys physically in sports and martial arts and I've never felt unable to handle myself against larger opponents even though their range can be frustrating and what not. I feel like there's many different variations of human beings out there and although size can be a good general indicator of someone's physical ability it doesn't tell the full story. Some people are just built differently and are dense, tough and strong. Just like some people are explosive, or faster than other people naturally. Like I generally don't feel intimidated or threatened by people that are smaller than me but there are those relatively rare individuals you meet who seem like their bones are made of rebar for some reason and they are freakishly dangerous lol

As a Muay Thai guy with a few years of wrestling as a kid, my grappling game plan is pretty much work the Thai clinch and sprawl if he shoots for my legs…. Maybe I need some jiu-jitsu training if it gets to the ground haha.

Not having things framed properly does both wreck the learning experience of those who went through it, and give everyone a chance to learn some very important information from the teaching/training failure. Ramsey's frame of reference makes sense. The 'do some damage' frame of reference also makes sense. They make sense with different contexts. Ramsey's desire not to wreck his training partners and not to do excessive damage in genuine self defence encounters is the belt and braces, safety first, approach. It is both smart and wise for most every training situation. The 'do some damage' before the situation is considered finished thing makes sense if you are told in advance that you are training a situation in which you will not be getting any backup from the police and the dude you have pinned either has friends or a girlfriend who will stick a blade or a screwdriver in your kidney and then kick and stamp you to pieces. Or the dude may be carrying a blade or a gun and may well use it on you if you let him up. Having the proper context for what you are training is night and day in terms of what you have (no choice but) to do, and what you will then need to be able to explain to justify your use of force to a court if you get pulled by the police. Having the proper context for what you are training also has huge significance for what level of force you are training and how you go about training it. Training force that will maim or kill is a very different prospect to training for a situation where you must have the specific intent not to do significant harm.

Oh yeah, I'm 5'10" and 140 pounds, there are so many guys in my catch wrestling club that are way less experienced than me but can crush me no problem. Once you start getting past a 30-40 pound weight difference, skill starts mattering a whole lot less. I got a perfect back take on my friend Memphis, who's about my height but a hundred pounds heavier than I am, and I just couldn't do anything once he rolled over on top of my leg. He's a rower, too, so I just absolutely couldn't fight his grips either. And we just kinda got stuck there for a few minutes until the bell rang haha. But in a self defense situation, I would have been fine. I didn't NEED to kill him, just get in a position where he can't kill me and I can stay there for a prolonged period of time. And man, broken record, but not being able to see the knife just again makes me think... use fencing masks!
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey Год назад

@flamezombie1
@flamezombie1 Год назад
@@RamseyDewey The way we do in HEMA haha. I'm basically blind without glasses, and I can't wear them under a mask, so I just sorta look for movement when we're at striking distance. You get used to 'looking past' the mesh after a while, but I'm biased because I've been doing this for 8 years. When we move into krieg (grappling lit. "war"), you just have to feel it out. But they don't restrict your breathing at all.
@flamezombie1
@flamezombie1 Год назад
@@RamseyDewey I'm told fencing masks have also improved a lot since then. But yeah, my main point was for the breathing. I've done a little bit of sparring unarmed with a fencing mask on, but it's all light contact so I couldn't say how impactful it would be here.
