I like to incorporate sweeps in my kumite, works wonders. Make sure you sweep the lower part in the back of the calf in the direction their foot is pointed (as they're stepping in with their attack)
@@dudcats During my brief exploration of TKD, I always found it weird that the one of the styles was "WTF TKD". I always read it as "What the F--- TKD" even though I knew it meant something else.
Great to see. I am 67yrs old and have been training in martial arts constantly since I was 15yrs old. I started with Wing Chun for 15yrs ending up as an assistant instructor. In my early 30s, I took up WTF TKD and reached 3rd dan but at 65yrs old, I decided on another change and started Shotokan and currently hold a 5th Kyu. If I have learned anything it is that all martial arts deserve respect and in most cases, the effort put in by the student is more important than the style!I have to say that there is a lot more to martial arts than fighting, I have trained for 50plus years and in that time I have had to defend myself only twice, successfully I am glad to say! If it was only about fighting then I put a lot of time in for little reward! But of course, it is also about self-discipline, a peaceful mind, good health and fitness and Dojo camaraderie. I follow your site and appreciate your openness as a martial artist. With young Sensei's like you around the future of martial arts looks good!
I have a 7 year old boy and would like him to start some kind of martial art. Im just not quite sure which kind will be better suited for him. Or should I just get him into whatever class near our house? How do you know if a dojo is good or bad?
So again a hook kick proves to be difficult to defend against. I've seen the same for the tornado kick and the spinning back kick and still wonder why it is so? Esp. the tornado kick takes a very long time, they still can't react to it, why? Is it because it comes from the back of the head and they can't see it?
@S K Yes, but even taekwondists tend to be defenseless. I've seen it so many times. Thing is I don't go to a Taekwondo gym anymore, but when I start again, I'm definitely going to ask someone from the more experienced competitors about this
I am a black belt in WT (World Taekwondo Style) Taekwondo. It's about how you conduct yourself when it comes to martial arts. You did well, sir. Your spirit seems bright. No martial art is greater than other. Integrity, modesty, indomitable spirit, perseverance, and honesty are all needed for a successful martial artist. Great job, sir.
Spoken like a true martial artist. Once again I commend this Sensei for trying to not compete against another martial art, but for learning how to deal with it in his style.
There is greater martial arts. What is most practical for real fight and what is most for acrobatics. ITF taekwondo is most practical for real fight, and WTF taekwondo is very agile to do in acrobatic (not effective in real fight against people who can do martial arts practical real fight). i am sambo & systema practitioners
you did pretty well my friend, very nice matches, congratulations on having the courage to fight against people of such level as national champions, not so many youtubers and overall people do so. You're brave and smart
I was thinking the same thing. Some martial art bullies show videos of boxing, bjj and Muay Thai fighting karate, TKD and kung fu practitioners that no one knows about. But this guys video is solid because he sparred with real life competitors. Not people who bought their belts from McDojos
this...is....AWESOMEEEEEE!!! Love how you are able to critique yourself honestly. That shows confidence (in your ability) AND humility (still able to learn). Exactly what anyone would hope for in a teacher as well.
What I love about your channel is that you're going out to improve your own Karate skills and try to discover ways to counter and deal with different martial arts. Taekwondo is very similar to Karate in many ways so it's a good way to experiment and improve your skills as a martial artist. Now with this experience you can teach your students how to deal with these scenerios. :)
I was fortunate to have an open-minded TKD instructor. He had instructors from different styles come in and train us. We also got to compete in open style tournaments. He realized that the more you add to your toolkit the better fighter you will be. It's like any other culture in that learning new things from other people only increases your knowledge. There are lessons to learn from all Martial Arts.
Taekwondo is such a beautiful martial art form. Its definitley the best style of kicks that ive ever seen. I used to take it many yours ago when i was much younger. Now in my late 40s i plan on returning back to it. The style has such a beauty to it like no other.
Brilliant! I like to see these kind of videos. As a practitioner of Karate and ITF Taekwondo I like it a lot! Always people ask: "who'd win between both martial arts?" I answer: "It depend on the rules" (speaking about sports) Sincere regards from Argentina, Sensei!
Becareful with McDojo. Pick a school that has atleast National Champion and registered to your National Taekwondo Organization. McDojo dont affiliate with any organizations (mostly)
@@m5a1stuart83 Mostly. My instructor was affiliated with both WTF and ITF, but was independent. Taught his own style. He was one of the pioneers of Tae Kwon Do.
It is so interesting hearing a karate perspective on ITF Tae Kwon-do. It made me laugh, not in a disrespectful way but rather because I recognized what the Tae Kwon-Do practitioner was doing and how it surprised the karate ka. Thank you for acknowledging in one of your other videos that ITF people can actually punch.
Pause at 6:44 . If this is MMA, I would have duck my head and do single takedown, posture up, then perform a combination of hammer first and elbow strikes 😂. But still, Karate and Taekwondo fighters are fun to watch. I enjoyed the breakdown of this video.
@@Samperor That’s why it is much more fun watching two different martial arts fighter fighting. Just like UFC back in the early 90s, beautiful. The fighters are expert in their respected martial art.
Man i really want to see more sparring karate vs itf because I rarely see this kind of video and also watching it on your channel is really fun to watch
@@GatodeUlthar666 We have those, but sparring rules not allow it. I definitely learned low kicks, sweeps, takedowns and even trapping in ITF. Outside sparring competitions, we can use it in free sparring tho.
I'm ahem ahem an old geek master in TKD & coach in Kickboxing. It's good to see a young Karateka who is matured , open minded & humble, that many lack young or old alike. I too learnt to be open & humble when i got swept down many times mingling with Muay Thai & Sanda fighters. My loss is my victory. #Yes my dear young man, u hav the right attitide. Every style has its pros & cons. Nobody is Master of the Universe. #Regards❤from Malaysia.
It is sooo humble and so wise of you to do this kind of interchange.bI admire and respect you for that. You are destined to become an excellent master of the Martial arts.
It's a real pleasure finding channels like yours testing yourself with sooo much humbleness and respect for the other martial arts and martial buddies, in order to share and grow up altogether. Gracias, Sir
Thank you so much for making a very cool video of taekwondo vs karate! And it's an ITF one. I can't get any other videos of itf's taekwondo vs karate from the internet. This is suprisingly wholesome!
I'm A WT Taekwondo and Yeah Lot of people get knocked out and fall like a log.😅Thank god you evaded the kick.😮Also yeah we don't punch face, But we can do short strikes to the torso part but should hear the sound or opponent should raise his hand or bend by getting hurt then you get 1 point. That's all that is allowed for us.I don't know about what happen in other countries with WT.
A very interesting match sensei! He moves very fast and has powerful kicks! But I noticed that you were surprised several times and I don't blame you. Taekwondo kicks, especially those that focus on the head (like the ax kick for example) are very "irregular" and with many variations, and I think that's fantastic! You had several chances to counter attack as well, but he was very quick to approach to clinch and not give you the opportunity to counter punches (But I saw that you tried several well positioned gyakus). It was certainly a fantastic experience to watch, congratulations to everyone involved! Ps: I am a red karate belt (Uechi Ryuu) and a blue taekwondo belt (WTF).
Been an itf practitioner for awhile now, I couldn't fault any of that from either of you, great control, awareness, reaction timing, counter game was on point, control of technique was excellent (as it's only sparring not brawling most meat heads would usually try knocking each other out) but this is truly growth between two legit traditional black belts at its best, and yup, our kicks are tricky alright and most of the time they differ with the person (height weight where they've trained etc) you simply never know what your guna get with a taekwondo practitioner but you made weathering the storm look pretty easy, solid work dude
I was a WTF practitioner for several years in my younger days, never did I realize there was ITF and that it would be more martial and less of just olimpics driven. It's great to see these kind of videos with two experienced and respectful practitioners exchange experiences in the dojo/dojang.
This is so nice to see. Karate man experimenting with sparring another style. And the post-game comments were so good and smart. I like the friendly attitude also. I hope to see many more and with other styles. I found one time when I jammed taekwondo I could do a little better, but their kicks are amazing. Thank you.
This was so fun. It's smart you are challenging other styles. Most people are too used to sparring with one style. You will never know when you encounter someone, what kind of attacks he will throw at you. It's good that you see other styles and see what to do next.
There are ways of disguising when you are switching stance, such as when you kick is already a good time to change stance with a follow-through, which you can support with a jab or backfist from your front hand.
Also, regarding switching stances. If you do it VERY quickly, it can freeze your opponent for a moment. Some 15+ years ago, there was an event at the Shotokan Ohshima Dojo in Santa Barbara, California. Mr. Ohshima had the Karate Club from Waseda University attend, lead by Mr. Ono. At the end of the practice, there was a Jiyu Kumite competition between the U.S. guys and the Waseda Club, refereed by Mr. Ono. The Waseda guys were doing very well and punching very hard (you could hear the impact from 20 feet away). Then Mr. Ohshima selected a U.S. competitor for the final bout, Dusty DePree. He was a young Brown Belt competing against a Waseda Black Belt (He also happened to be the son of one of my old teachers-a VERY dangerous fighter.). Every time Dusty sensed the Waseda guy ready to attack, Dusty would just switch his stance and the Waseda guy would freeze and try to come up with a new strategy. It happened over and over again and then Dusty would attack as soon as his opponent would freeze and he ended winning the match against the Black Belt.
its very refreshing seeing someone go to different schools to train with them.. do this more. i do jiu jitsu id love to see you go to a jiu jitsu school impressive dude keep it up
It's great that you are stress testing your karate sparring techniques. It's the only way to see if they work in real life situations. I hope you can test them against other sparring disciplines like boxing or MMA. (I saw you brought Aikido people to your dojo as well) I have tried the same, but the main issue I find is the agreement on the rules. For instance, Taekwondo won't admit leg sweeps or face punches, so when I have tried a friendly interaction I have ended with bitter discussions about me being a "dirty fighter" and trying to explain that I am not trying to see how good I am at Taekwondo sparring, but how either one of us would make it free style has not worked. I'm glad to see you have found someone willing to share without ending in these type of arguments.
Also another thing about tkd is it's use of fast multiple kicks to keep the opponent out of striking range while still being able to jump in and kick them
There is a lot of similarity between ITF Taekwondo & Karate., esp., Kyokushin Karate. But Kicks in WT has evovled alot since 1973 with the formation of World Taekwondo Federation. They have moved further and further away from ITF to become a unique & distinct specialized kicking art with the same name - Taekwondo. It is still more difficult to fight against WT exponent with the established rules. The only advantage that Karate would have is the face punch and leg sweep. If permitted, then Throws as well as WT does not practice these aspects. Keen to see you spar with WT practitioner as well. Well done with this one !!!
And the main "secret" of their kicking power is the constant use of an centering the most around use of kicks. For short a large majority of their training, that they do alot of makes their kicks more powerful and effective than most. Truly tkd is the art for training kicks.(yes ik it means hand and foot) but there truly are not any techniques traditionally from tkd that use the hands and especially in modern times they typically outsource the hand techniques from karate, boxing and other arts. , where as other arts like wing Chun have exceptional training of hand techniques
More power to Sensie yusuke nagano, & God bless to your Career, as a Karate martial arts Instructor,, ShotoKaN, & KyokushiN, are my Best FaVorite Karate Martial arts, ever,,😄
That spinning hook kick. If he wanted to land that, he would have. You don't want to try to block that because it's going to penetrate straight through your glove and still knock you out. You gotta learn how to slip, roll, etc. from boxing or that kick will take your head off. Good stuff, though, man. I love the amount of respect you show for other arts. It's a breath of fresh air, these days.
Both MA are great. My 8 year old son started taekwondo itf last month. When I was young I also trained taekwondo. I finished with 1 kup. If he doesn't like taekwondo I will show him karate or ju-jitsu. But for now he is ok with taekwondo. Training is intensive and he likes it.
For anyone wondering who the person on the wall is, its the pioneer of Taekwondo, General Choi Hong Hi. If you google him you can learn all about his interesting life (e.g. in the war he was captured by the Japanese and forced to teach Taekwondo, or when he fled North Korea). He officially created Taekwondo on April 11th 1955. In taekwondos early days, it was all just the one organisation. Then once FGMR (First Grand Master Rhee - given this status due to him being the first ever person to be promoted to grand master by the pioneer himself and also his right hand man) brought Taekwondo over to the UK the organisation UKTA was formed. Sadly he was cut off and left out of events due to apparently being to old. Now FGMR Is in the organisation ACE (Founded by Grand Master Paul Cutler). As previously stated, FGMR was General Chois right hand man and is the second father to the martial art (The way I like to think of it). Sadly, General Choi passed away back in 2002 but has not been forgotten. However, I am lucky enough to have met FGMR on multiple occasions, and have been promoted by him many of times. The most recent promotions with him was my 1st and 2nd degree black belt promotions.
