With 6 different mechanisms for walking toys/automata. I designed and made these in the early 80's. Each one has a different level of complexity. One was exceptionally good fun. One was just hopeless. The rest are amusing novelties.
Derived from vintage wooden toys each of these “walking” toys demonstrates a different movement.
They were cut with a hand fretsaw or with an electric Hegner scrollsaw. All were painted with watercolour “poster” paints and varnished with solvent based polyurethane varnish. The combination of water based paints and solvent based varnish prevented smearing when varnishing. Today I use acrylic paints and water based varnish to similar effect but much more pleasant to use.
