While exploring Google Maps I came across an old broken spillway in the woods. I knew I had to check it out. I took my tiny boat and some fishing rods and headed out for an adventure. This turned out to be one of the coolest places I have ever fished.

At one point in time, the state record smallmouth was caught there. The steel radial gates were removed a couple of years ago due to structural concerns. This allowed water to flow through the gates for the first time in many years. It's my understanding that there's an effort underway to remove the entire dam.

It was definitely one of the cooler ones I've been to. I'm sure there were bigger smallmouth. I just didn't catch them. I never do that well the first time I fish a river. It usually takes me a few tries to get the hang of it. Thank you!

Ya, it was cool to see it in person after drooling over it on google maps for so long. The fishing was so-so but I think the low water might have had something to do with it. Or I just don't know how to fish this spot. I guess I cracked the code on the thumbnail. I guess an overhead drone shot of a cool spillway is all you need to go viral. 2k views per hour - loco. This always happens in a video where I didn't really catch that many good or interesting fish. Next video 31 lb flathead = 450 views. Thanks!

What a great place to fish. Beautiful area for sure. I thought you would have hooked into a nice walleye in one of those deeper pools. Super cool drone footage. That place is a keeper!
@BackroadsAngling
@BackroadsAngling 8 месяцев назад
I was surprised not to catch a walleye or at least a pike. The one thing I would have changed is to bring heavier jig heads and weights. The depth of this place caught me a little off guard and coupled with the heavy current it was tough to get down to the bottom without getting swept out. Now I definitely have to return to figure this place out! Thanks!

@BackroadsAngling
@BackroadsAngling 8 месяцев назад
@@DarrinOchsner It seems like the locals do fish there a fair amount but overall it seems like a good spot. I talked to a few guys when I was going back to my truck and they pointed me to some areas above and below the dam that they thought were better. I didn't have time to get to most of them. I've never fished this river so I didn't know what to expect but my takeaway was that the smallies average on the small side. I think a 15 incher would be a big one. The walleyes on the other hand avg pretty big according to DNR surveys. Many fish 21 inches or over. Thanks for watching.

@BackroadsAngling
@BackroadsAngling 8 месяцев назад
I think I visited during the perfect time to catch peak fall colors. This is indeed in the Driftless Region so your eyes are not deceiving you. I'm sure I will return sometime. I talked with some locals and they said the low water was keeping some of the better fish from moving up to the dam. Maybe after the spring thaw next year would be a better time for catching bigger fish. Thank you for watching!

It was a beautiful area to fish. You sort of made be nervous when it was almost too shallow for your boat. LOL! I counted 13 Smallmouth Bass, 2 Brown Trout, and 1 Sucker Fish. I am not a Fly Fishing expert, though, that area looked great for catching those Brown Trout on Flies? This was a great video!
@BackroadsAngling
@BackroadsAngling 8 месяцев назад
Ya I wouldn't recommend someone to float through an area that shallow. Especially with a canoe or kayak but this pontoon is very hard to tip so I knew that as long as I could keep moving forward I was going to make it. I caught a whole lot of smallmouth on this day. I edited out most of them so it didn't get too repetitive but they were everywhere. I wish I would have had more time to fish for trout but because of the long drive I didn't have as much fishing time as I would have liked. There are a lot of really great trout streams in this area that deserve my full attention on a future video(s). Thanks!

I can't find the answer to this question maybe you will know can you eat the freshwater clams that grow in the small Creeks of Western Pennsylvania they are loaded with clams you can make a living off it if you can eat them I don't know if you can
@BackroadsAngling
@BackroadsAngling 8 месяцев назад
I actually looked this up not too long ago because I was finding a lot of them. Most of the resources I checked said not to eat them because any toxins in the water become concentrated in clams. They also said that they weren't particularly good tasting.

So you caught 2 fish on a jig and you are talking about switching to a crank bait? lol Try parking the boat in slack water and cast a small jig into the moving water. Keep a tight line as it moves with the current and concentrate on the taps on the line. With a spot like that there are no needs for others.
@BackroadsAngling
@BackroadsAngling 8 месяцев назад
This is edited footage so sometimes when I switch to a different bait I might have been fishing the first bait for a long time and if I didn't catch anything I didn't show the footage. I fished this spillway for more than 4 hrs but condensed the footage down to less than 10 min. I didn't show much footage of me bouncing bottom because it wasn't producing. I parked my boat in the slack water on the far side of the spillway and casted to the eddie that I highlighted in the video for a few hrs. I mostly fished the pulseR on the bottom but tried all levels of the water column. Caught plenty of fish but they were all smallmouth.

I have no idea what the size limit is for smallmouth in that area, but, it seems obvious to me, a LOT of those smallies need to be caught and kept, to promote larger growth for the others.
