Yup. My ex worked at a bank and found a state quarters missing it's entire clad layer on one side. We took it to a coin shop and piad them like $15-$20 to send it off for grading for us. You need a membership to send coins off so best to find a coin dealer who has one and pay them to do it. Anyways got it back and it sold for around $350 on eBay. Now this was about 10 years ago

@@alexbadillo9940 Beware of the fully copper ones. People can heat them up and dip them in methanol and it makes the coins cooler. Partial clads are harder to fake.

@@Tms0211 thanks I found it at work. I work in two car washes and when I clean the vacuums there are a bunch of coins. I have gotten at least $600 dollars out of them and 4 silver dimes

Awesome. BlueRidge Silverhound , it's weird I just got one, I'll make a video later perhaps you can take a quick look, It's missing both dides.. it's really odd though.. cause I'm not totally sure.. I was kinda thinking it was "Maybe" an exsperimental quarter.? I recall reading that one of the Exsperimental Quarters was like a greenish, goldish type color. Lol. Idk.. it may just be missing both sides . I found it in change from my lucky store about 2 weeks ago. I'll let you know when I made the video. I'll try to kp it at about 1 min. Thanks Blue Ridge. Just found a nickel with the entire body and head missing the plating and on the reverse just the building having plating. Never seen anything like it before. Straight into my collection. Always enjoy your videos for years now. Thank you for so much information.

I found in my change a 2013 South Dakota state quarter missing almost all of it's clad on the front and on the back. The coin is also damaged while being mint. The lower right side has a small amount of plating. This plating is on a small Washington head, facing in the same as the big Washington. The back side has the little bit of plating just to the right of the man working on the far right head. It's actually comical. Looks like the guy has painted his shadow silver 😂 There is also on the far left, on backside, Washington's head facing left and another of him facing right. There is damage to the side of the quarter. You can clearly see a letter T, R and S in one spot and then two A's and I think a T. On the front side the last A in America is Doubled.... it's the regular size A and then attached to it on the bottom is a HUGE letter A. On the backside on the upper cheek of the right head is a HUGE fancy letter E. On the same head at the very top is a letter C. Looks like Washington's head is wearing it like hair! The P mint mark is doubled along with a few other letters/numbers on the coin. Curious what it might sell for.

It seems that the plating comes off rather easily, I found a few quarters and dime in The cup holders in the backseat of my car where my kids put their drinks. The plating was mostly gone from sitting in a sticky substance aka: soda or juice lol. It could have just sat on top of a moist area for too long. Who knows, that could have been one from my car that was damaged by coke or Fanta lol. Good luck, I hope you find a good explanation for your quarter.

I just purchased a 2004 wisconsin high leaf error coin only to find it's also missing its clad later on one side, You can see the missing layer on the readed edge which is emaculate itself.. I grade the coin MS 66 at least.. Now I'm so happy.. I don't know what to do with it.. Gotta send it in.. I know that much at least.. Never seen a double Error coin like this before. Especially a high leaf..

Great stuff thank You! I have the same exact State Quarter (S.C.) that You used in Your video. Mine looks EXACTLY (color) like the one you represented in the vid and Mine is like this on the Obverse, Reverse, & the edge. I do not see any layers. The color looks identical to Your example. Is this a coin one that I should hold onto? I would assume this is in the range of a $20 or $30 dollar coin. Sean, i found one of these S Carolina quarters today an both sides are missing that layer, looks like it barley stuck in one part of front but rim is completely copper? I am not an expert an me thinking someone did this, but when I looked it up to see if anyone else had one in same S Carolina D, yeap but still someone could have damages this is where my thoughts still go! You ever seen a 1979 quarter that just looks like total Is oxidation on both sides... To me it looks like a piece of metal that sat in chemicals/Water too long... I went to look at it and the light then I dropped it I was trying to see what year it was because it almost impossible to see... When I dropped it it made a real weird coin sound that I just don't hear on quarters well at least not newer quarters

I never understood why the mint bothered with clad coinage. Why not use cupro-nickel, like so many other countries, not only fewer minting errors, but also the punched strip can easily be remelted and reused as it is homogeneous, like the coins.

Clad coinage definitely used less nickel than the 25% contained in cupro-nickel but the reason for clad coins is the coins have the same "signature" as the older silver coins and were accepted by vending machines, thus avoiding the expensive retooling of millions of units. As regards to appearance, the cupro-nickel outer layer would look the same as a fully cupro-nickel coin.

I'm pretty sure there are ways to remove the plating. I was curious about if my blowtorch could melt a quarter and it ended up ripping off the plating. Some spots were as copper colored and shiny as a new penny, the only problem is that most of it tarnishes gray while cooling down, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to stop that or remove it and I want a copper quarter so bad.

How do you know the plating is gone and that it's not just brown via chemical? What does a caliber/micrometer say is it's thickness and what is the average?

Ok so what if it's missing the copper plate ing or the copper look. For example I have a Louisiana quarter weighs5.8 but had no copper on the rim it looks like two nickel halves with a slight division in the middle, this is the edge of the coin all the way around

I have a 2021 penny, it has a ragged Rim. NO plating On either side. Then you can the zinc chipping from being minted. It's ugly, but I guess thats what happens.

I have a dime that weighs 1.6 grams and a wheat centvthat weighs 1.8 grams ive takin to local coun dealers they tell me they are not anything special vut offer to buy them and practically begging to buy them i believe the dime is dual clad missing and the wheat cent im not sure but im also not a coin collector either but also jo dummy id like to sell but cant get any trusted coin dealer for reasonable offer

I did find a 1999 P Delaware quarter whith gold coloured on the opvere and Nickel colour on the reverse but i personally grade it about 66+ I'm a south African who collects world coins but dond have Mutch help about US coins and yet its my favourite coins to collect i just love the US coins and i love this bleurich site
