I went out for a trail ride on the xr400 and came across some new logging tracks leading to the old state Highway 6

Omg! What a find! While biking along highway 2 on a hybrid street/mountain bike, I had noticed a steel gate that was about 75 yards across some property, and was obviously a very old railroad crossing. Got the courage to dart across the property one day and over the tracks and outta sight. Went down over a creek, then up quite a grade, on barely a trail. At the top I came to a 'dig' to prevent motor vehicle travel, popped over it,-- and I swear I heard the angels sing! I had come to a previously unknown network of old logging roads! In an area I thought inaccessible! They went for miles, even across a decent size d.o.t. concrete bridge over a big stream, and actually linked up to the end of a paved road that linked up to a nearby town from which I could loop back and eventually to home. It was the best day ever.!😄

When I was a teenager I rode a 1980 Honda XL125S and one of my favorite places to go were the old railroad tracks where they took up all the rails and ties. What was left was like a racetrack through the wilderness... until I almost rode off a cliff where they'd removed a long bridge over a canyon and didn't put up any signs or guard rails. Fun times!!!

I feel your pain. Pulled a similar stunt in 1980. Wound up swimming my trike to the other side. Thank the lord the old crossing was short and shallow. Pulling a water logged ATC 110 out of the hole after the rotten ties failed was like wrestling a calf. The ballon tires floated but getting up the cut bank was not fun. Good thing I wound up in the little stream because I had pissed myself on the way down. Terrified. My guardian angel deserved a Six of beer and a pack of smokes Weekly when I was a teenager.

No place for anyone that couldn't . 😋 . Seeing I'm almost at retirement age . Those times are mear memories now . . Wouldn't have had it any other way . Rough and ready , but decency was instilled by our parents . Father was ex military . So his word was law . We stepped out of line you had to take the consequences ,, way it was . That was normal life for us and everyone else who lived there , if anyone needed help , you gave it unconditionally with no reward , a thank you was enough for us . Probably a section of old State Highway that has been bypassed when the road was upgraded. The old roads would follow the landscape ,no matter how twisty the route. Those sections tend to get bypassed with viaducts and sometimes tunnels.
@ralphmills7322
@ralphmills7322 3 года назад
@@paulg3336 I had a similar experience on a bit of bypassed road here in Maine back in '60's/70's. The old road followed a stream, where the new bit ran straight up and over a hill. As a kid with a single speed bicycle the choice was to go along the old road under the shade of trees in a gentle slope or push our bikes uphill in the full sun. Even then the asphalt on the ld road was cracked and broken with patches of grass and small bushes and quite narrow in spots. I assume there is nothing left by now but random chunks of tar..

I used to have an old SR500. That had no starter. Kick only. No key. Cable release (compression release) like the old-timers used to have. If you could figure out how to start it, you could steal it. That thumper had torque for yonks. If the chain would have stood it, it could have rolled off a dead stop in high gear (and it had a high sprocket at that). Your Honda has dual valves though, you can hear in the exhaust tone, how much better it breathes than my old SR500. Thanks for the great content. Keep up the good work. בס״ד

I never watch driving videos but it's Marty so WTH... added bonus it's overcast and bone-chilling in Canada so seeing a beautiful spring day in New Zealand did some good

Something is very strange going on in this country - Abandoned tractors, excavators, bulldozers, boats and now a highway

Marty, just out of curiosity, which island(north/south) closest town, city do you live? No, I'm not flying from USA to steal your excavator. Lol

Sweet. I'd name it _MartyT_ road, put up signs and see how long it would last.

At the first junction you turned left, where does right lead to? At the second junction you turned left again, the original road going under that stone bridge ahead, where does it lead to? At the third fork you turned left again, but the right track went uphill, to where? These and other thrilling questions will be answered in future editions of Marty T.

It's funny how this looks exactly like some roads and trails up in the Oregon (USA) coast range that can also be taken to state highway 6, here, in Oregon. The world is so much larger and smaller than I thought.

you can literally see Tillamook Bay from them. In fact, until I saw your name, I thought someone was in my area.

Sometimes the old highways could help you get around the rush hour gridlock or when there's a major accident blocking the entire highway.

Must have been a good road at some time bro I see where there was a cats eye near the camera in the last shot or is that poop on the road. Safe travels
