Train wheels don't rely on the flanges much. They rely on being tapered so the whole vehicle self centres. It also works as a differential for corners.
I love that someone else was out there doing the same thing! I kind of wish this could become a whole industry for people who wanna chill and see some cool scenery.
It will, this is like the 3rd video to come up on my feed in the past few months of people riding on homemade carts on abandoned tracks. Give it a few years and I bet this stretch of track will be full of DIYer's fighting for track space on their little go cart trains.
Need conical wheels, they will keep you on track without the flanges rubbing constantly, the flanges are mainly to prevent derailing from turns and bumps. It will also reduce the stress on the wheels. Your best bet is probably to either weld some cones and the support structures or buy the specially made wheels. If you somehow got a hold of 4 of the right type of rims, you could cut them in half and they'd be pretty easy to mount. Some cheap go-kart rims would work.
Yeah, I expected that to be a problem when they tried to turn, but the way the video is cut, I'm not sure they ever even made it to a significant turn.
i can't believe guy that wasted so much time didn't google or watch single 10 minute long video how train wheels work, he could make just long cones and not worry about track gauge
@@RadzPrower I did some minor research using context clues from the video to figure out where they started, which was from Dos Cabezas, maps.app.goo.gl/BKNF2Cxmc7vzX2k4A. (At 10:19 you can see the water tower and track switch in the background). From there they headed two miles in the opposite direction from the water tower, so roughly North-West. Their journey ended roughly here at the Goat Canyon Trestle Bridge Parking, maps.app.goo.gl/ULkeTEJnPb2YeMnu7. And indeed there are no significant turns on that route, only minor curves. The real challenge would have come a bit further up the track with a significant almost 180 degree curve
Railway wheels have a conical profile to counter centrifugal forces at turns. Also it helps with improve the stability and tendency for the wheels to oscillate. Maybe worth considering next time.
Right, train wheel designs are qualified to be used on train tracks…kinda like how certain submarines are designed and built within standard specifications.

Having no solder experience nor heavy tools and absolutely ZERO workshop, I still want to make a railbike from an old bike to bike some good old railroads around here, possible with a motor attached ... Guys like you give me hope though. And inspiration! Thanks!
Probably one of the most entertaining videos ever! No joke! Please continue on with this crazy but fun endeavor of yours! I along with thousands of others want to travel with you across the great trestle!
Ya know, they sell train cart wheels for way cheaper than that, even without switching to polyurethane. 3 minutes of searching, and I found a set some for $26 a pop on Zoro Select, and sets of 4 for a similar price elsewhere. I think you could redo this project with proper train wheels for less than the cost of replacing the engine. This is an awesome project, and it would be a shame to give up, when you're so close to success! One other idea: you could easily incorporate some friction brakes, applied either directly to the wheels, or to the track. One final thing to mention: it probably wouldn't be extremely difficult to devise a "reverse gear," if you switched from a chain to a tensionable belt-based system.
I agree with the tension belts, but I also think more complexity probably isn't the thing you want many miles from help, in the desert especially. +1 to Train wheels though. Even the $200 ones are cheaper than doing all that work when you value your own time.
Also, train wheels have a specific geometry that keeps them on the track using a solid axle and mirrored bevels on them. The flange on the outside it just a safety in case something goes wrong with the wheels tracking.
@@1SweetPete I agree about added complexity being liability, especially in a remote, inhospitable environment, but part of the appeal of the idea I mentioned that I didn't expound upon is the ease of repair of such a system. A belt is easier to replace than a gear chain, and you can carry multiple sets with basically no extra weight. Hell, a leather belt could be used in a pinch in most such set-ups. Also, with the right set of belts, you can cut entire sections of the drive-train out if they give you problems. I've seen "bamboo carts" that use a similar idea that can be completely dismantled and removed from the track in SECONDS, axles, platform and engine in separate pieces, with a slip on belt. It's reduced complexity, when you take into account chains and adjusting tension.
@@FeedMeAQuarter Indeed. The beveled wheels and flange were critical to making modern trains safe and workable. There's a lot of theory behind such a seemingly simple concept.
honestly for what its worth i feel like they could even just make some wheels out of some scrap plywood and patience, as long as its round and vaguely in a trail wheel shape (and not made out of what appears to be the crappiest cast metal available...)
The BEST integration of a Sponsorship Ad I have EVER seen! You should give lectures to other RU-vid Creators on how NOT to piss off their loyal viewers! Not ONLY do I feel more positive about the channel, but also about Shopify!!!
Yeah it was actually entertaining and made me want do download shopify lol 😂 most of the time I just skip past youtubers ads but this one made me want to watch. More youtubers should do this
Please pleeease film your next trial! I just loved the story! No lies there, I had goose bumps watching this video. I lived the adventure with you guys! And hats off to Mo for being THAT friend that pushes you not to stop
Absolutely do this again. I really want you getting to the impossible bridge, that would be epic. Also you should hit up any of the guys from the Safety Third podcast to help you with the engineery bits
You guys are awesome. Love your songs with clever lyrics! I admire your determination. Thank you for the inspirational talk to "not give up". Well done guys. (Sorry, the comment was meant for the vid where you get to the bridge).
you should totally do this again! when you do, i suggest using brake drums for the wheels. they’re all one part, and you can find them for pretty cheap!
I agree you seriously need to do this again. This is one of my favorite videos I have seen this year so far. Can't wait great video with loads of laughs. Great job fellas. Gonna sub so I don't miss any more of you great work. Thanks for sharing.
13:41 I've said this before and I'll say it again. THIS IS WHY I WATCH YOUR VIDEOS! Even though you didn't succeed the goal, you uploaded the video. Other RU-vidrs *_only_* upload their successes, so the moment you hit play, there's no suspense. But with your videos, I never know if you'll make it or not!! Which makes the ones you do succeed, that much sweeter. Take care buddy! Looking forward to the next video!
And yes, I want to see a part 2!!! ( I'm saying this in a reply so people who read the comments before/while watching the video, don't know the outcome )
If you would like to try this again, I will give you a bit of info, train wheels aren't actually designed that way. There is a slight curve between the riding part of the wheel, and the flange. meaning it can navigate curves easier. the best thing to do is to rebuild the wheels entirely, because even without the broken wheels, it would have been very hard to navigate the curved without banging them up. If you need more context on wheel designs, search up a picture of railroad wheels and you will see what I mean.
Jeff Bridges in the photo, as an editor, I approve 😂 Also, just wanted to say I love your videos. The songs you create, the mission you go on, you really inspire me man, can't imagine how long these videos take, thank you so much for all your hard work 🙏
I've never had a favorite content creator, but seeing that you uploaded a new video really makes my day. Thank you for continuing to do what we all enjoy here
Legendary concept man! Seen this guy rolling around on railroad karts on Instagram and I knew if someone with a lot of knowledge about youtube content would try this, it could turn into an absolute banger! You did it! 🎉 Keep it up!
that is amazing. A very bit of advice, train wheels are conic for a good reason. If you want to go faster without issues, is a must. I wish you a lot of fun!
Do it again! I'm into trains, and I've seen these types of videos, so I really want you to see this in person. Even though I live in Canada, I still have the internet to see it.😊❤
One thing you could have done to improve the wheels to keep centered.. is to make it them conically shaped so that they will move themselves towards the center when they wander off, or you come a cross a curve.
Okay holy dang. You and I are newly instagram pals but I hadn't watched a full one of your videos until now. I have a best bud who I go build natural dams with and drink beverages. Some kind of obsession with scouting great stream locations, altering the ecosystem, shooting for the highest water level differential before it gets dark, before ultimately destroying our dam so we don't actually ruin too much of the earth. This video seems to have that energy and now I'm gonna go watch the rest of your entire catalog, thanks, very great, goood job.
My first watch! I’m here because Eric’s IG congratulation to your 500k. Love your energy and been looking for a new RU-vidr to follow. “Keep building they will follow”
Showed up in my recommended... glad I watched!! Don't know if I was just too high or what, but your singing had me waking up my wife by laughing too loud😂😂
amazing talent. the major 7th 2 chord riff with autotune and close harmony vocal explaining what had happened was amazing funny. the shopify commercial was sublime. you're engaging the audience in all areas. wow. i love youtube.
We have a lot of that here in the Philippines. It's one of the transportation of people near our railroads, we've been using that for decades now. We also have a lot of abandoned railways.Yours are a bit modern.
Hi PP, I just want to say that this video ,and all your videos, are tremendously entertaining! The way you stay positive within all that trial and error, that you not only solve, but embrace it the video. It allows the viewer to ride every wave and take us along for your journey in a way that even the biggest RU-vidrs can’t do. I can’t wait for you to eventually venture across that bridge and for your new posts in 2024!
I love when creators actually put effort into their sponsorships when they do that I never skip them, and it actually makes me think about the service.
I love watching people build stuff because they can. I always see people put a lot of effort into making something that's probably boring and making it entertaining. I really want to see more.
This is a great video I enjoyed it immensely and well-produced very entertaining ! You and your friend are awesome and I'm looking for part 2 where you make it to the bridge!
Awesome idea. Rail is almost zero rolling resistance, super efficient. Can you source an old railroad handcar? Big strong platform and wheels. Add the electric motor and the platform is so solid I bet it could take a couple of comfy armchairs and you'll have a great little transporter !!!!
There are a lot of folks who rattle through pretending to know what they are doing on here. This however was so great to watch. Seemed like the out of the box gearing worked great
I really hope the next time you do a project, you remember the time you lost an entire day because you refused to find a set of railroad tracks near your house to slap a tape measure on.
I also love bridges so I would love to see you try again. And it would be dope if you branded it something clever like you did with the Scootcase, I loved that!! And no lie, I just so happen to be wearing my put more engines shirt today.
the only thing that would make this better for a basic working machine is to make the wheels conical in shape. this would allow it to dynamically adjust and travel around bends/curves much smoother. even if it's DIY for them to reach said shape, it would be much better than the setup used for the wheels here.
some villagers in the borneo island have this private motorcycle train (I found 50+ train as this sized one) for their own daily transportation purposes, because there is no road but railways. they use car and motor cycle hub bearings for main wheels on the rails and inner wheels between rails (for not to be derailed).
I have no idea how this video has not become #1 on trending. you're my favourite RU-vidr because you keep on surprising, and even make a video out of it even if it doesn't go to plan Keep making great content.
RU-vid has a problem as the video documents a felony crime now classified as domestic terrorism by Homeland Security. It is felony trespass and interfering with transportation. Clearly the line isn't in service and it should be fine but the federal government doesn't have a sense of humor. The video can get RU-vid into legal trouble and the creator put in prison. It is a stupid situation, but pirating the rails is highly illegal.
I love that he’s got Eric on speed dial. To be fair, if my friend texted me late at night that they needed help loading their homemade train track car onto a trailer I’d be very interested to come help
love your videos and would love to see you try to do this again, just some feedback in my opinion the songs can get annoying which caused me to skip a portion of the video, aside from that keep doing what you are doing and i can't wait to see more!
Why do i get the feeling you were the kind of guy who a lot of people said no to as a younger person. Because of this you always try to achieve everything without asking for help
I can't tell you how long I've wanted to build a railcart and go exploring abandoned tracks. Sadly in the UK there aren't all that many left as abandoned rails either eventually get built over or turned into trails. Still, there's a binch in Yorkshire so I've heard! Great video, smashing build and interesting railways! P.s. the music video of the mistake was brilliant. fair play for owning up to the sort of mistake most have made but won't own up to 😂 I think I'd have just had a trantrum😢, stuck the seats on the other eay around and called it a day. What, me, lazy?!
Alright this is the first video of yours I've come across. I came for the train track go-kart, I'm staying and returning for the custom songs. Keep up the great work!
Yes, definitely do this again. TIP: I noticed you were using cylindrical wheels (bc they’re cheaper ik) but that might be why they broke down so easily. If you git conical wheels it’ll be more stable on the track. Just look up a youtube video of why train wheels aren’t flat.
