I Found Malaysia's Portuguese Descendants 🇲🇾 🇵🇹 

I have known this even when I was very young. I am a 4th generation Portuguese-Spanish Filipino . Both grandparents came from Northern Portugal and spain in 1860. I speak straight Portuguese and Spanish. I go to Portugal every year and visited all over the country, my fave is Porto especially Matosinhos. I love the fact that Malaysia keep this as part of their cultural identity. Muito obrigado pelo vídeo!

Yes there is intermarriage between the malays and Portuguese right from the beginning..cant deny that

I think its not 4th generation but 14th generation of Portuguese descendants as Portuguese came to Malacca back in year 1511, more than 500 years ago, so 14th generation is make more sense. Portuguese came to Melaka back then for 3 missions; Gold, Glory and Gospel so their men married locals and converted them to Catholic, but not so much Dutch and British later. Similar happened to Dutch in Indonesia or Spain in the Philippines, they married locals. Since mostly Malays already embraced Islam during Sultanate of Malacca Empire, so most Portuguese married Indians and Chineses at that time. They are not Malays, but they hold status of Bumiputra (son of soil) similar to Malays, Orang Asli (indigenous people in Malaysia) and indigenous people in Borneo; Sabah and Sarawak. Most Kristang since then intermarried with other Christian communities in Malaysia; Chineses, Indians or people from Borneo or even foreigners. Only small minorities of them converted to Islam and married Malays. So most Malaysians sometimes confused them with Malay-Muslims due to mixed blood.

Some Brazilians who came to Malacca can understand Malaysian Portuguese here and there. And some words came from Old Dutch that is used in the Malaysian Portuguese language such as atapel (potato), kalkun (turkey), kukis (cakes) and doi (money).

Malaysia choose the path of integration and not the path of assimilation. Thus why all the different races held on to their cultural heritage so well.

They are called gragok in the streets and they speak "kristang" , they're also known as Eurasians.. I myself am Eurasian , Muslim however but have relatives who are catholic .. were from Singapore. Most gragok Eurasians , primarily Dutch, Portuguese or both have Malay in their blood , hence the darker skin tone or features ... Those who don't know about eurasians , often mistake them as Malay or Filipino .. some have lighter skin tone and those maybe have a closer or new Caucasian ancestor in their genes not too far away.. maybe just a generation away .. like for example their Eurasian mother marry a British man .. one thing is for certain .. most eurasians are proud , and don't like to be associated with Malays .. some kind of arrogance .. not all of them but somehow in them they have this pride . Haha . They confuse Islam and Malay also .. oh well .. to me race is just a race .. nothing special . Good content anyway ! Keep it up

Malaysian Portuguese (Melaka) is just like Sri Lankan Malay. Malay speakers in SE Asia no longer understand the old archaic ancient Malay spoken by Sri Lankan Malays. Just like Portuguese speakers in Portugal and Brazil no longer understand the old archaic ancient Portuguese spoken by Malaysian Portuguese.

Maybe a bit of a correction here. Malay is an ethnic group. Kristang is a different ethnic group. So for them, they are not Malay, but decedents of Portuguese settlers in Melaka. So Malay-Portuguese is not entirely correct term to use to refer to them. (unless of course they are actually married to an ethnic Malays, but that's a different story). You can say they are Malaysians (as a nationality) but definitely not Malay in that sense. Additionally why the lady mentions that they are the 4th generation there, is because the location is quite new. Kristangs themselves are not new to Malaysia and spans back generations. But as you say, the location is gazetted as a Kristang area in the 1930s, i would guess the family has been staying there since then.

I am a Kristang or Eurasian from Singapore like my sisters but my parents are from Malaysia!!!! The Eurasian communities can be found between Malacca, Malaysia and Singapore!!!!! These are the only two countries that are connected and intertwined together between Eurasian Kristang community of South East Asia!!!!!!!

Back in the good old days, living side by side Malay neighbourhood, we called them GRAGO, only in Malacca. Don't know where the term GRAGO originated. Maybe they were off shore fishermen. Don't know if GRAGO today is offensive, like calling South Indians KELING. Hope they still accept the term GRAGO cos it's heritage that can be recognized plus unique, especially Malacca is historical city. Sadly Portuguese Settlement undergo modern housing, no more half wooden homes, lighted with bright Christmas trees, comes every Disember. Missed my friends there, where ever they are.

The Melakan Portuguese speak Kristang (16th century language). Even the modern-day portuguese (in portugal) can’t understand them. Portuguese soldiers & kapitan intermarried locals to spread the catholic sect. At that time, Melaka already multi-ethnic kingdom. Most of their wifes were non-muslim. Some muslim women such as the slaves, maids, artisan & farmers also force to leave their religion to get married. Life is very hard for local women during the occupation.

It's called Portuguese Settlement, not Portuguese colony. The language they speak is Kristang. There is a school in the settlement called Canossa Convent and it has a long history of Portuguese heritage all the way from Macao. The Canossian Sisters from the Canossian Convent have been invovled in the community in Malacca since the late 19th century before establishing the school in 1905.

FYI, Malaysia has also got Alexander the Great's descendants

The first mix of them started of Portuguese n Malay....but after second generations they only married only to among them so they face n fiscal look like 70% malays...then after that they married with chinese,India n Malay...n fiscal n face be totally similar malay...but they religion remain as christian....but who married with malay they converted in islam as muslim.

The Portuguese start to travel after defeating the muslim empire in iberian peninsula where the got the navigation knowledge from the library of toledo. Prior to 1500 they know nothing about science. Once muslim defeated, they start to rebranding the knowledge found by muslim scholar

Old Portuguese language

It is strange, in Goa - India, the policy of the Indian government is remove everything Portuguese from Goa even since India took over in 1961. We are taught to hate the Portuguese as the focus has been on the conversion of mainly Hindus to Christianity. The Indian government with the RSS took down a lot of Portuguese structures trying to wipe away anything Portuguese. In Panjim, the capital city, the RSS walked thru the streets breaking all the beautiful azulejos tile work for the street names. The government of the current PM has spoken of a "homecoming" for Christians to convert to Hinduism. The RSS also is demanding some sites that have churches need to be demolished as they were Hindu temples on them. A lot of harassment of Christians that gets worse every year. Most Christians are choosing to move to Christian countries overseas. When a recreation of Vasco de Gama's 500 year anniversary of his initial voyage was planned, the ship from Portugal was received by all former colonies except Goa. The Indian government refused entry into Goa. However they were allowed in International waters off the coast of Goa. We the people of Goa have moved on and not harbored hatred for the Portuguese and so the locals got on boats and went out the ship throwing flower garlands in peace. The Portuguese also did a lot of good that we are grateful for. The current PM of India also has said that anyone saying "Viva Portugal" when Portugal is playing in World Cup Soccer will be arrested and jailed. Last year his Chief Minister of Goa stated that they will "wipe away anything Portuguese in Goa". All this hatred because some Hindus 500 years ago chose to become Christians during the time of the Portuguese. They have one billion Hindus in India but i guess that is not enough? The schools today have a curriculum that focuses on conversion of Hindus and portrays the Portuguese in a bad light. They refuse to be equal and teach of the great legacy the Portuguese left in Goa. Only because of tourism have the old Portuguese buildings have been saved as the RSS wanted them all torn down when India took over in 1961. Hindu icons/sculptures are forcefully put in Christian neighborhoods. If they try to remove them because they are blocking traffic a whole group of thousands and thousands of men from the Bajrang dal show up showing their might threatening to harm the locals in that area. i wonder if the Christians that fought against the Portuguese ever thought what would happen to the Christians once India took over??? The Christians in Goa went from over 75% Christians at the turn of the 19th century to less than 23% Christians as Goa has had half its population today coming from the rest of India which is Hindu. And with the constant threats more and more Christians are choosing to leave with Portuguese passports. The Portuguese felt sorry for abandoning the Christian community and offered Portuguese citizenship to all people from Goa for up to three generations from 1961. Unfortunately when you are a minority in any community you will be constantly bullied and you will not have peace. This is why the Portuguese colony of East Timor fought to be independent. It is the only way to survive. The majority will always put laws in place to take any land or resources away from you. i wish this community the best of luck.

Fyi. To be a Malaysian malay, you have to be a muslim, speak malay and practice malay culture. If a malay choose to denounce islam, they too would not be considered a Malay even if they are ethnically from the malay race. Thats according to our constitution.

Cuba kita lihat contoh nya ada beberapa negeri barat yg pada masa dulu pernah di perintah oleh orang islam tapi, apabila mereka jadi memerintah negara sendiri mereka hapuskan atau mereka ubah semua peninggalan orang luar yg memerintah negara mereka dahulu. Jadi jgn lah kita bangga yg kita pernah di jajah jadi lah negara dan rakyat yg pernah menentang penjajah dan tentu nya banyak benda benda atau pun tempat yg di tinggalkan oleh pejuang perjuang rakyat kita terutama bangsa melayu yg menentang penjajah, jadi kenapa itu semua tidak di tonjolkan atau di pamerkan kapada umum atau pun kapada pelancong yg berkunjong ke Malaysia. Malaysia mungkin terlalu bangga jadi negara dan bangsa yg pernah di jajah kerana itu lah sampai sekarang pun Malaysia dan rakyat nya terutama bumi putra ia itu melayu maseh di jajah dari segi ekonomi, budaya pemikiran dan juga politik. kita seperti tidak boleh melaksanakan sesuatu keputusan untok negara dan juga rakyat dan bangsa kita sendiri Soalan nya sampai bila?
