As a person with an invisible disability I truly appreciate your content. When you were talking about how people were staring at you on your mobility aid, I get that too because I don’t “look sick“. Thank you!!

I'm soooooooo happy for you!!! I too am young and have a mobility scooter that looks "too cool" and people often question if I can bring it certain places - especially in business and shops. However, I have found that if I hang my handicapped parking placard on the handles or the back, people are much nicer and it makes it so much easier to "prove" I can take my scooter wherever I need to go. I actually often use my expired parking placards for this so I can use my current one for parking!

I'm honestly so happy for you that these companies sent you their products and so now instead of having to choose, you have basically all the options right in the palm of your hand. The bike is absolutely my fav and you could so get that redone in a bodyshop to look more your style, look for places that do hotrods and that.

This series convinced me to finally get a walker so I can actually go places without searching for a place to sit every five minutes. I walked around the store with it and it’s wild how much of a change not lifting my cane every other step makes

I could imagine some sort of sticker on the mobility scooter saying "beautifully disabled" :) it would help with the staring and be super cool at the same time 😎

Chair makeover suggestion: golden for the frame and red for the cushions. It'll match your hair and you'll look like the queen you are!

I used to struggle with the concept of gears too!! Until my dad taught me this When going up hills or inclines you want the lowest number, for example 1. He taught me to think of it as carrying someone up the hill, you’d only want to carry one, not 2,3,4,5,6 as the gears on your gorgeous tricycle go. But if you’re on flat ground it’s much more manageable to carry more people (easier to push the pedals as there’s no resistance from the hill) (and obviously it uses a bit of your imagination because no one could POSSIBLY carry six people) It sounds silly but it really helped me get the hang of how they work, and I hope this helps you too!!!!

As someone who uses a wheelchair/mobility scooter in my 20/30s I definitely relate to getting odd looks for being 'too young' to need a wheelchair. I had to buy my own mobility scooter as when I asked social services they said I need to be accepted for needing an indoor wheelchair and use it for at least 6 months before applying for one to use outdoors. As I don't usually need a wheelchair inside (on my bad days I tend to use my stick - my flat isn't wheelchair suitable anyway) so that stopped me in my tracks. Am glad you've found your unicorn(s).

Ohh I absolutely looove when doctors ping pong me in between each other it's like when you were younger and you asked you dad a question but he tells you talk to your mom but then your mom tells you talk to your dad, just a wonderful experience filled with two specialists that have no Idea what is going on

Oh geez, I got teary-eyed. I'm so excited for you, these 3 look absolutely stunning! I'm so glad that those companies reached out to you and that you're now so much more independent/comfortable. You deserve this. As a matter of fact, as an able-bodied person, this series taught me that many disabled people in need of a mobility aid might have the same problem of wanting to be mobile in- and outdoors and it frustrates me that nothing quite fits perfectly... I feel like every disabled person who is in need deserves to have access to a scooter AND an electric wheelchair.

I used a wheelchair for the first time out in public the other day!!! I went to the art museum to see the Claude Monet exhibit and it felt so freeing to not worry about rolling an ankle or dislocating my hip! 😊 Just wish people wouldn't walk in front of me while I'm wheeling lol!

That motorcyle scooter is the coolest damn mobility aid I have ever SEEN!

Two bits of safety advise since you haven’t ridden a lot 1. Always always always use your back breaks before your front breaks (otherwise you’ll go head first over the handlebars) 2. It’s a three wheeler do not make a sharp left or right turn when you moving at any decent speed (you’ll flip the bike in the opposite direction of the turn you turn left but your body will go straight ahead or to the right). Other then that congratulations I’m so happy for you!

I am so happy you were able to find your unicorn! And a retro scooter that will work for you to go out and about! AND A TRICYCLE! It will be amazing to see how this affects your energy levels and general life. Claudia, Tilly, and Walter are going to have to try to keep up!

Yeah, I got diagnosed with fibromyalgia years ago and I've gotten NO long term care. I need mobility aids, I need treatment, I need feeling like someone cares yet all I've gotten is I was mocked for using a cane by a physio therapist, got told I absolutely cannot take painkillers and got told I'm only in pain because I'm crazy

I'm so happy for you, I think most of us crossed our fingers that one of these companies would reach out to you and provide you with the dreamy vintage scooter and the E-Tricycle! So very glad it happened, you deserve it. Can't say I learn much in this series because I've been through it as well and I pretty much know that the prfect solution is.... SEVERAL expensive mobility aids. Which I can't afford... BUT I loved watching it, and I found it useful to have videos that explain everything when I don't have the energy to, and it's just nice to know you're not on your own struggling. Countless of your videos helped out in the past, so it's just really cool to see your hard work paying off lately, and this is just a really cool example of it all! Can't wait to see tons of video and pics of you and Claudia riding along, and enjoying the extra bit of freedom and mobility

As a long time cycle commuter the most important is: make sure everyone knows where you are. On a road with cars? Make sure they can see you! Passing someone on a path? Announce to them your approach. And of course be respectful. If you can get out of the way of the vehicle or pedestrian when you share their space, do. As for gears, Higher is Harder but faster. The rest you will figure out from trial and error. Just like the rest of us! :)

"Video calls are the future." And then, three months after this was posted, video calls with medical professionals became the standard way of doing things. I really hope it stays that way.

I am so happy for you! I legitimately teared thinking of all the places you can now go. So incredibly liberating! Also inspiring (in the none condescending way). This is a huge decision/change and I’m so impressed with how you handled it! As for the gears: I have vector related memory issues. What I ended up doing was taking a pretty gold paint marker and writing which way the gears shifted right on the gears themselves. Unless you were riding the bike it just looks like a little decorative flair. Have you considered designing a sign that says “this is a mobility aid” in a more stylish vintage way of course. You could put it on your scooter to avoid glares and also sell it in your store for people who are having similar issues.

As an Occupational Therapy student I have been loving this series, it's been really eye opening to see what goes into choosing an aid and how difficult it can be to find something that allows you to fully participate in everything you want to do! Also I squealed when you mentioned Occupational Therapy and really loved the video interview with Jo Southall! Thank you for allowing us to follow you Jessica xx

Regarding the gears: If you're in a high gear, you'll need a high level of energy to pedal, if you're in a low gear, you'll need a low level of energy to pedal. Same goes for your engine. Thus when it goes up and it's already hard to manage, you go in a lower gear to compensate, whereas on flat surfaces, you want to be in a high gear to get the most speed out of your energy :)

I have dysautonomina and Ehlers Danlos so I need a mobility aide at times and I was so hesitant to use one but once I was able to keep up with my family and not be the wet blanket of the family, I began to love using a mobility aide. Unfortunately I only rented one and do not own one. I have looked into it but the cost is too high at the moment. I haven't comes to terms with it enough to see if insurance will cover it at all because that would be admitting my limitations and I am just not there yet. However, you looked adorable on your mobility aides and so HAPPY. I hope they give you back all the freedom you have been missing out on.

On the gears: Going up hill - gear down Going down hill - gear up

Yay for supportive companies. And yes, this really is a good solution - I have a recumbent trike, a powerchair, a manual chair with powered wheels (currently being fixed) and a lightweight manual for around the flat. I'm seriously considering a folding wheelchair in the future as currently none of my mobility devices fold which is a... disadvantage. Very few wheelchair users I know have only one chair - partly because they break so bloody much and partly for different situations. On the being stared at in the park - I'm not surprised - have you consider putting a disabled/wheelchair user sticker on it which would possibly make it very slightly less cool but potentially make people less confused. On the gears, I'm not sure this will help but think of it as they are trying to make it so you have to put in the same amount of effort all the time - so lower gear = easier work so it's for when other things make it harder (i.e. up hill), higher gear = harder work so for when other things are making it easier (down hill). Also when going up turn gears down, when going down turn gears up.

So happy for you! My son is only 5 but finding him a suitable wheelchair has been a nightmare, thankfully the wonderful people at Whizz Kids are helping and we his chair in February xx

Gear rememberance thingy- when you go uphill, you’re slow and want to be low (low gear), if that doesn’t help up is slow- slow DOWN (down aka low gear). When you’re going downhill you’re fast. When you’re fast you’re speeding UP (up aka high gear).

That intro was the most epic thing I've seen in a long time. We stan our vintage rainbow queen.

The section talking about video calls being the way of the future is eerie as all hell nearly one year and a whole entire world pandemic where we cant leave our houses later lol. You two were right!!!

GOSH I wish I knew those power tricycle existed 10-5 years ago when my EDS legs were still working a bit sometimes! Yours is soooooo cool! Anyway, I have now a foldable power chair like yours and it's all I ever needed (I wish I could have a scooter too to look less 'disabled' but I don't have enough room in my house for this). Your stable of unicorns is perfect.

When it comes to bike gears, do the opposite of what the terrain is doing! Going uphill? Gear down. Going downhill? Gear up! Xxx

I have epilepsy and other comorbidities. Recently I bought myself a tricycle. I call her my Red Lassie. She's enhanced my quality of life so much. The weird thing is by pedalling her, I've got more energy than ever before and I'm more active at home. Lassie has been a real life changer.

I wish I had this series years ago. I had a catastrophic car accident and spent close to a year bed bound then wheelchair bound. I was supposed to spend another several months on a walker doing PT but I was so self-conscious that I skipped that step. I’ve been paying for it with chronic pain ever since and now my knee has me barely able to walk across a room. I let the judgment of able bodied people affect the decisions I made for my health and safety, and it’s one of my biggest regrets.

I can't believe they won't send you to an OT! I've been going since I graduated from high school. They help me by filling in where my executive functioning lacks, they help me advocate for myself and make sure that my school is following my accommodations. They'll help you with applying for jobs paying bills and doing the things you need so you can live independently. They had a practice apartment in the same building I lived in. They would help people with disabilities transition to independent living.

Ah you look like you are having lots fun. Congratulations lovely. I too have awful looks from people that are older than me. I am 37, I used to use a 4 wheeled walker a lot, and old ladies would spit lava at me they were horrid. I use a powered wheelchair now ........ And it's even worse!

I've got PCS and would die for that tricycle; I can't stand on one leg without falling over much less bike on a two wheel bike without giving myself another brain injury 🥺

This is amazing! I’m gonna have to look into it. I’m getting a manual wheelchair with a smart drive but it’s been since June trying to get everything through. My insurance finally overturned my appeal last week, my occupational therapist and physical therapists rejoiced because they really want me to have it... so now I have to wait for the appeal to make its way to the medical equipment company and be custom manufactured.... sigh. The process is ridiculous. This mobility aid is the cutest ever

It gets so upsetting that 60% of what we struggle with as disabled people with judgement from others. Like living with these chronic conditions aren't enough and all we pay out for doctor bills and medications. And then if you can find a way into a store that has a cart for you to use then you can't even access half of it because the aisles are so cluttered. Bleh. I'm so glad you found all the mobility aides you needed and that your life can become a little less problematic! ♥

My mother is an occupational therapist who works with children who are both home bound and in the school system. I’m always happy to see the job be talked about! She does great things!

Literally smiled so much throughout the entire video! I'm so happy for you that you found some great aids to help you move better and retain your independence (and have some fun!) :) I would suggest for the GreenPower scooter, to stop people glaring, perhaps put a large-ish sticker on sides or back that says "Mobility Aid" or something like that, so people can clearly see it's a mobility aid for you. That might help a bit!

Honestly, what I love about this video is that next time I meet someone who needs a mobility aid I can show them this for ideas. I wish I had known about the foldable chair few years back (for someone in my life, not me).

As a current occupational therapy student, I absolutely love your videos! They are so educational both for the general public and for therapists. I find that I have learned so much from your decision making process for mobility aides, your views on "function" and "normal", and your wonderfully well put video on the problems surrounding the plastic straw war.

I'm so excited for you!! I know the last time I tried to ride a bike I definitely took out some flowers and felt horrible about it. I didn't feel safe and ended up walking the bike back and decided that it was just beyond not safe to do that anymore. It's hard to accept that the things I did as a child with ease are just not a thing I can do anymore. You looked so happy though.

Congratulations on finally getting not one but three mobility aides that you legitimately need for yourself. They are truly amazing, and fit what your looking for at this stage in your life. I am so proud of you. Really, if someone is looking at you and Claudia and your dogs in the park, I would only assume they were admiring a lovely family outside enjoying beautiful day.

that last bit with the tricycle made me actually start tearing up. as a kid, one of the few ways my dad would successfully bond with me was by us riding our bikes together (admittingly, because it was one way we could be together but not have to talk, because he was p awful. but i still craved good memories with him, just like all kids do with their parents. and i got the luxury of having good memories with him through bike riding, where, because we couldnt talk and bike at the same time, talking couldnt spoil anything). but as my chronic pain in my legs got worse as i got older, i kind of succumbed to the fact that id probably never get to go on a bike-ride again i found this channel relatively recently thanks to a friend recommending it to me, as i was looking for more disabled youtubers for comfort and advice as i struggle to get a diagnosis and, hopefully, mobility aids. which part of my journey of accepting that im disabled meant cementing the idea of not being able to do certain things, and though that is true, i had fully accepted until this moment that riding a bike again was one such impossibility for me since it drains my chronic fatigue too much and worsens my leg pain. and, tho i dont know if i want kids yet (in no small part because i want to make sure i have the emotional capacity/stability to be a good parent to them), the idea of not being able to ride a bike with them was an idea i apparently suppressed. and i hadnt realized how much the idea's possibility meant to me until i saw you riding one, and i realized "I could ride a bike with my future kids" and started crying before i even finished the thought i felt like Pam Beasley, from the US version of The Office, when she realized via talking aloud she would have to give up on her childhood dream of a terrace, and not realizing until she spoke the words how Not Okay with no possibility of the idea she was as she started sobbing mid-sentence. thanks for pointing me to a possibility for me, so i can keep the idea alive. it means a lot. i definitely have saved this video (and the others in this series) for future reference, should i decide i want beyond a possibility, that i want a reality, with that dream. thank you for that. thank you so much ♡
