Hey Rene, I really liked this video. With everything laid out on the tables like that we got to see not only what you got but what you didn’t get. Please come back to this flea market!
Renee, my husband's mom's side of the family came from Germany in the 1880's. They saved every letter written and we paid to get them translated. The earlier letters before they changed the writing cost way to much to translate. Some of the letters are pretty sad after WWII my husband's great grandmother sent food to Germany, I have the tracings of some distant relatives feet as they needed shoes. The letters after the war have these seal type things that were put on the letters depending on what country was controlling that part of Germany after the war. I store all these letters in acid free sheets in the big white notebooks. Husband's family on both side saved every letter they got, Homestead deeds, stock certificates, and all kinds of paper. I have given some to the Fort Benton Museum in Montana. They have a wonderful research library there. It has taken a lot of time to sort through all the stuff that was saved! On an interesting note my husband's great great grandfather was on his way to the US when his ship was hit and sunk almost after leaving port by a British vessel a coal ship. He died but his daughter came a few years later. She made the trip and arrived safely. I have her citizenship papers from the 1890's?
Great story. I translated a lot of German scripts for my former girl friends family who immigrated in the 1890s from Germany to Idaho. Of course for free, because I was part of their family at that time. But they paid me very generously sending a lot of neat stuff which I collected like stamps, postal history, coins and other historical paper items. Yup, after WWII there was a lot of starving in Germany, and U.S. relatives sent a lot of CARE packages to the Old World. The letter seals you mentioned were fixed on these letters due to military or civil censorship.
The letters are gold and I envy you the fun you are going to have going through them. If the people writing were in Germany - they may tell an excellent tale of the interwar years - the economic collapse - the rise of those who promised better things. That's quite a flea market. We have some indoor stuff here, but it's not nearly as big and organized as Columbus. Hope you have a great rest of your Monday!
That's what I was thinking of with the letters, even if they consist of everyday chatter, it will be interesting to read about life between the wars. Also, just thought, that's a whole lot of letters! Now I must learn German ASAP :0) I wish Columbus was a bit closer, about an hour & forty-five minutes away. I was told summer is a good time to go, with even more sellers. I'll have to make the trip again in a few months! Picked up your package today!
@@PaperandMooseyes, the translating will be tedious but hopefully exciting. Like you can’t wait to see what happens next. Glad the package made it. Hope you like the contents. Can’t remember what’s in there. Might be rocks 😊
Loved how you stopped to look at the vitamins but then opted for the sweets 😄 That was a great deal for the paper. You're for sure going to need Babel now.
Love Love Love Ephemera! Those papers are so fun! Can’t wait to see what you uncover between the lines! I’ve been finding some here and translating. Nothing jaw dropping just gossip and holiday wishes. But still fun! Bucket list is a hand written journal! Finding it in the wild is challenging. Thanks for taking us along! I had a blast watching!
I love shoo-fly pie but I have never had shoo-fly cake before but it looked good as did the broccoli salad. That looked like a nice flea market with a good variety of things and that indoor shop had some great looking things to eat. Thanks for sharing!
Congratulations on the German papers! I hope they are all as interesting as they can be! It would be wonderful if they gave the pre war story of a German family! Once again I was glad I was only an observer of this flea market! I spotted several things I would have grabbed if the price was right and the food!!! Oh my, it looked fantastic! Please be careful and stay safe! ❤️❤️
Your inquisitive nature brings many projects into your life. One day, down the road we may get to hear what you’ve learned about the people in that big stack of letters. Such fun!
I still think the BEST deal you ever made was Civil War diaries for $25. That was such a steal you should have brought a gun. Still and all, love the video.
Renee I'm loving every second of your flea market tours. I want every vintage paper, photo and toy! How do you restraint yourself?! 😅 It amazes me how the plastic junk of our lives today are more valued than the history of the people that came before us. I wonder how much the dumpster diver made on the vitamins and processed junk food..? Thank you so much for sharing!
Not sure if that is a dumpster dive or if they purchased an overstock/pallet of health & beauty. The one bottle of melatonin I picked up was opened and over half the bottle was empty, another bottle was still sealed but expired. I think if you have the time and could find unopened and unexpired items, it would be worth it. While I'd love to try out dumpster diving, the legal implications scare me as most of the dumpsters around here have cameras.
Shoo-fly and pretzel rolls... forget Stuff, I'd stuff myself in the farmer's market! I understood some of the German paperwork, but would have been nabbing some of the old highway maps for a friend. And a shoo-fly, naturally.
My guess is that it's overstock or they purchase pallets. As long as bottles are still sealed and not expired, much cheaper than the store. The one bottle of melatonin I picked up was almost empty and the seal was broken, so that's a no for me.
Ms Moose, I have a bone to pick with you because you caused me much distress and hunger pains to the point after watching this video I went and ate a donut all because of all the delectable food you showed us causing me to loose my school boy figure ( actually lost it a long time ago if I’m being truthful). You walking thru the food building was almost to much for me take in with all the glorious food items on display. Cornbread for not much more than $4 while 2 days ago I paid $3 for a slice to go with my soup. I almost experienced cornbread rage when you passed by it, but my rage has abated. The handwriting on the letters in German was so nice to see and maybe you can find a good story to share with us if you can translate it. What a great video and thank you so much for it even if I experienced cornbread rage.
@@Paula_KentuckyRed I so agree with you about cornbread and like your husband I use to eat it all the time. However times have changed and I eat it when I can get it. That $3 slice tasted like cake which was so disappointing to me. But is not Ms Moose’s channel the best to watch. Thanks for your comment.
@@just.j5302 I agree but the problem is that it is hard to only eat one slice because of the wonderful flavor. It’s apparent you know what is good in life! Keep living life to its fullest.
@@simsjef I have a griddle on my stove , soo 🙄, if hubby asks for cornbread to go with something I’m cooking, I mix a small batch and drop a few spoonfuls on the griddle. If the griddle is hot enough you do not need oil. Eww, one of the 3 ingredients is Not sugar 🤢. No sweet cornbread for us ! I do sometimes add Tony’s Cajun spice, depending on what it’s going to be eaten with, especially red beans and rice.
The German letters are interesting. Will be curious what project you do. I have cousins last name Hoffmaster. Columbus is huge, will have to get there once this year.
You look cute in your little hat. Glad you found you some papers. I would not even know one word in German. Glad you found a big old stack. Your broccoli things sounded good. Have a nice day. Thank you for your video. I enjoyed it and I’ll catch you on your next one
Hello Renee. That’s a lot of German to decipher, but it’s going to be well worth it. There was so many great photos there, and other items. I would have loved to been there but I would have been broke before I left. And don’t get me started on all the baked goods. But the broccoli salad looked delicious. It’s one of my favorites. Take care I hope you’re week is full of fun and treasures. 🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️🕵🏼♀️☕️🫖☕️🫖☕️🫖🥰🥰🥰🥰💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
The broccoli salad was wonderful!! I would go broke at the baked goods and food section, too many yummy baked goods and treats! They also have a large stand for lunch, including a full "chicken dinner". People were eating chicken meals at 9:30 in the morning, it's that good!
That sort of embossed copper plaque next to the wooden elephant thing looked nice - probably wasn't vintage. Looked good from this side though. Paper haul was great mind you. Glad you got that and that range of relishes in the food market. Wow. My lunchtime sandwiches would never be the same...
We used to go to Columbus every week, used to have it on the other side of the building where they sell the plants now Was always a good market and I found some great stuff there Long drive, we used to go up the night before and get a room
I love your flea markets Renee, but i wouldnt know where to start or when to stop, lol, because there looked like so many wonderful items ❤ it thank you 😊
Last Weekend we opened a Big trunk in the celler of my parents. My greatuncle left Germany before the 2. W world war. He died in the 90s ...he lived near NY. We have all the letters from the family written dringend and after the war. They sent many pacetages with good from america to Germany. We read all the letters and saw so many pictures about this terrible time in Germany. I thought about you Rene. I live in Germany ...Bavaria
Oh wow, thank you for sharing your story! How wonderful that the letters were kept all this time, so much family history as well as a personal insight into what was going on during that time.
I go to Columbus fairly often. Even if I dont find many old treasures, I never miss the produce or the awesome baked goods inside! I enjoyed your visit.
Hey Renee! Please refrain from showing such yummy baked goods in your vlogs unless you plan on sending me some!!! Ha Ha Ha!!!! Glad you had a good time and found so much ephemera! Take care! xo
I LOVE Columbus Flea Market! Haven’t been in a few years though. I live about 40 minutes from there and my son (who goes there often) are gonna have a Momma/Son date there in the near future 😉
Hi Renee. What a Flea Market and finding some interesting paper. I enjoyed it until I saw the Deli. I gather you were getting hungry. Didn't you eat before you got to the Flea Market? Sorry for feeling off. You are so sweet and kind to people. God Bless you Renee. Take care. Mari'a. 👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
The one half with the covered areas seemed a little "empty"... What month would you say is the best to shop? Middle of summer must get really hot there, I would imagine fall is probably nice to shop.
Did you get me any Amish donuts? I like the vanilla creme kind, both powdered and glazed. And the toasted coconut too. The stuffed pretzels are awesome there. And that Amish BBQ is to die for, but rather pricey.
I got a sour cream glazed, it wasn't bad. I think I'd get a filled one next time, perhaps a raspberry though the vanilla creme sounds good. There were people eating the BBQ already at 10am!
It was nice coming along with you at your flea market walk. So many interesting things! I was wondering, you are not selling lately at the flea markets you're going? The baked goods and all different food is what killed me though. I need to have my gallblader removed, so I'm on a diet till I make the decision (it's been almost 2 years now) to do it. NO vegetables for me, no legume, no fat food, no egg yolks, etc...
I do sell at the flea market, rarely film as many of my customers have requested to not be on camera. When I do film, I blur the footage and that causes many upset viewers, so it's easier for me just to not film. So sorry to hear about your gallbladder, that sounds like a like to deal with!
I bet you are just ITCHING to get snooping at the flea market! That box of figurines look like they be the right scale for my Standard Gauge Trains. Would have negotiated for those. Those boxes of old toys look like some of the items in that toy store sale. All those treats are making my digestive tract growl...! Quite a variety of stuff! Hope you received the two parcels...and in good shape!
I picked the parcels up yesterday, they survived the trip in good condition! They'll be featured in an upcoming mail video in a few weeks. I loved the little figures, especially those sitting on the benches, I have one of that set. They were a bit pricey, was told they were "rare"... I didn't want to argue with their "rarity", so just nicely walked away.
@@PaperandMoose Great, glad they came through! On a couple of past mailings, one box was split open...looked like the mail truck ran over it from the photo the recipient sent me...the insurance covered it. Truck?? Maybe a fr-g hopped on it??? LOL!
I just wanted to ask… when you are at flea markets looking for treasure have you ever seen any Lionel trains their for sale… And the Broccoli salad I would have bought too myself…
If I do come across trains, they are pricey. I also am not that knowledgeable about what trains would be best for reselling, I'd have to spend time looking each up.
I might have missed it. What is the name of this flea market? My husband joins me in retirement, and we are planning a trip up your way and through New England in Sept. The bakery is worth a visit!
I AM BEGINING TO UNDERSTAND YOU SO MUCH BETTER . AT FIRST, I WAS AT A LOSS BUT SINCE WATCHING YOU MORE AND ESP. AFTER THE YELLOWSTONE VAC, WITH TACO I LIKE YOUR MIND AND YOUR HUMOR. I HOPE THIS DID NOT. COME ACROSS AS WRIED. IT TAKES ME TIME TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE. THE YELL;;OWSTONE WAS SO PEACEFUL
Columbus Market is on the western shore of New Jersey (Delaware River), about half-way between Trenton and Philadelphia, but closer to Philly. Probably qualifies as "south" Jersey.
