Today, Universal Studios brings their monster franchise back to life with the first installment of the “Dark Universe”, THE MUMMY starring Tom Cruise, so Awfully Good Movies is looking back at when one of their most famous monsters came back to life without Universal’s help--I, FRANKENSTEIN, starring Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy and Jai Courtney! Yes, the people who brought you UNDERWORLD thought it’d be cool to create another franchise about mystical creatures battling over the domination of Earth, with this one centered around Mary Shelley’s stitch-faced abomination of God. But as it turns out, when you take the formula of the UNDERWORLD movies and subtract Kate Beckinsale in a latex catsuit from the equation, it ends up being pretty goddamned stupid. You got Aaron Eckhart going from Two-Face to several faces stitched together as Frankenstein’s monster, who finds himself caught up in a war between demonic creatures and angelic gargoyles. And with Bill Nighy as the prince of the demons eager to harness the Frankenstein secret of bringing the dead back to life, this Frankenstein’s monster has way more things to run away from than angry mobs carrying torches and pitchforks. And yes, I’m calling him Frankenstein’s monster instead of just plain Frankenstein! If you want a movie about the actual Victor Frankenstein, you can watch whatever that piece of crap with James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe was. I know I’ll have to watch that movie to tie into the FRANKENSTEIN remake with Javier Bardem, and let me tell you: NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.

Majorly it's a CGI fest, but Aaron playing the character with full sincerity and the pretty simple story makes it a fun film

I, Frankenstein was a rather good movie for me. I found it to be fairly original in it's story and entertaining in it's combat scenes. I like the idea of it existing in the Underworld universe. It fits.

Um no....I mean I remember the last jedi...but that doesn't mean it's a good movie, and it's not neither is rise of Skywalker or the snowman and the mummy...and pirates of the Caribbean 5 or my least favorite fantastic beasts the crimes of Grindlewald.....I remember all of those vividly but that does no mean neither of those are good

I'm weird and easy to please, but I also found it entertaining. It wasn't an amazing thrill ride, but at least it played on the screen and I understood the motivations. And im a bad movie science fiction freak, so i like all of them. I think it's biggest problem was re-using too many actors and repetitive lines, but other than that it was good. I'd definitely watch it again if it was on Netflix or hulu

I liked it too and I am hoping for a sequel. It did both the original book justice and expanded beautifully into the cinematic world, better than most movies based upon comic books.

Looking at some of the comments, I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who liked it. No, it was never going to win any Oscars, but that's not what they were going for. It was a really cool premise and the film was entertaining, so that's like 85% of the battle in my book. I don't think it deserved to be shat on, forgotten, and then drudged up to be shat on some more.

Who are those people saying this movie sucks, because I think this was a great movie. What is wrong with taking the movie seriously? What is wrong with being eloquent? The concept found in this movie made sense, and my only regret is that there is no sequel.

Naeem Sima Oh yeah, no doubt, both almost have absolutely no shred of what Shelley’s work was all about. But I do see why he sees it more in I Frankenstein than in the Classic Universal movies, while the old ones did have their moments of campiness and cheese often times it becomes a little bit more momentous within every year that passes. The older they get the more interesting it is for people to watch them and see how film started off and hey sometimes they created another masterpiece like Boris Karloff’s version. But in I Frankenstein, not only do they have the technology and resources necessary to make the film good but they have aaall of the lore being presented to them by both the Universal movies and the book yet they ignore that and go for this lame story about Gargoyles and Demons.

If he's Frankenstein's creation then, if VF wasn't a terrible dad, in a posh school they'd call him by his last name. Which would be Frankenstein, not Adam. At least this tried to add to the original. But the striped down theatre production with swapping Sherlock actors, Victor for monster was brutal but good.

This is a guilty pleasure for me. It is bad, but not as bad as I thought it would be. It did bother me though they called him "Frankenstein" when that is the doctor's name and not the monster's. The CG is laughable as well but it is hilariously bad.

Ya know, somewhere deep down beneath all that convoluted bullshit, there was a decent idea for a story. I mean, the whole immortal Frankenstein's monster in modern day thing. If you took that concept and flushed all the demons vs gargoyle shit, one could've cobbled together a story worth watching. Could've been like Interview with the Frankenstein, following his long story through flashbacks. Or it could've gone a more Highlander-ish direction. Whatever. But they needed to _not_ stack one high concept on top of the other like that.
