STEEL - Awfully Good Movies (1997) Shaquille O'Neal, Annabeth Gish, Judd Nelson DC Superhero movie 

I'll admit, I like Steel. I loved the character and was excited to see him get a movie. I was disapointed when he didn't fly but that wasn't in the budget. And Shaq...was actually good casting. He looked like what Steel would look like if the comic came to life. Yes, Michael Clarke Duncan would of been perfect casting. But MCD wasn't a star at the time. Was a year before Armageddon. And two more years before The Green Mile. I kind of wonder if they remade Steel who would play him. Would Terry Crews be a good fit?

Yo, Meteor Man goes hard and deserves much respect though. That movie was my jam growing and I never understood why the concept didn’t go past the few issues marvel released of it. With good writers, artists, this hero could be one of the greats.

I was touring with Ringling Bros in 1997. After a show at Madison Square Garden I’m at the cotton candy stand which had to be backstage and I feel this presence behind me. I turn yo look to see a big elbow by my face. I look up and up and up… and realize it’s Shaquille O’Neil! He was getting a backstage tour and I couldn’t help myself. I said I could wait to see “Steel”… on Mystery Science Theater 3000 😂 Glad he has a sense of humor!

Steel is the best movie that has ever graced the silver screen and should therefore be treated with the respect it so rightfully deserves. Clearly you’re unable to appreciate the hidden complexity, the amazing comedy and the nonstop action this movie provides. This movie clearly deserves to be compared to the other great movies of all time like Shawshank Redemption and The Long Mile. Not to mention the great on screen performance of Shaquille O’Neal. 10/10

He along with Dagger appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) shows Cloak and Dagger (2018-2019) and Runaways (2017-2019) played by Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph respectively but they've also appeared in animation and video games too. * A good deal of Milestone Comics heroes such as Virgil Hawkins/Static and Augustus Freeman/Icon (DC): Since this was a comic book company created by black creators. * Al Simmons/Spawn (Image): A former U.S. Marine who was murdered in Botswana while on a mission and sent to Hell he was brought back by Maleborgia becoming a Hellspawn in the process. He was the most popular non-Marvel/non-DC superhero selling really well since his debut in 1992 even spawning a spinoff that revolved around Sam and Twitch and has appeared in film, animation and video games to middling results no less but he's still kicking around in the comic book world.

It's hard to enjoy it even as a guilty pleasure. It takes 40 minutes for JOHN to become a super-hero and, while there are cheesy one-liners, they're said too fast and there are no pauses. One of them is "It's hammer time!" That's M.C. Hammer's catchphrase! I can't believe that STEEL... steals. There are funny moments... some intentional, some unintentional. There's one that I can't tell: STEEL gives the victims of a mugging back their things and, after some heroic words, he gets ready for his dramatic exit. He goes up the escalator. While it's clear that Shaquille O'Neal was cast because of his popularity as an athlete (of course that there are some basketball jokes) rather than acting talent (it's hard to take someone seriously as an actor when the poster shows their nickname), I wouldn't say that this is a "That non-actor doesn't belong here, so stop shoving them down our throats!" type of vehicle. He struggles during the emotional moments, but he has enough charisma to be a good sidekick. Actually, why wasn't SPARKY the protagonist? She has a cooler equipment and a more interesting story arc. Annabeth Gish's performance is decent and she and Shaq manage to have chemistry, even though it's never clear if their characters are supposed to be friends or love interests. Richard Roundtree's performance is good and the theme music is catchy, but the villain is boring. The scene where JOHN (slowly) chases a guy down the streets and then through rail tracks is one of the worst action sequences I've seen in a long time. 3/10

They need to reboot this movie for sure. They need a big budget movie for this with a great actor to pull off John. Put the Superman symbol, red cape, jet boots, thruster on hammer, and more original script. It's 2019 DC so get on this. Have a cameo for Superman with new actor and put in a new DCEU if done. If no DCEU, then a solo film would work but cameo still.

I think the white boy who's narrating this video doesn't understand that a "dookie rope" refers to a gold chain that young black people (especially rap artists) would wear around the neck. It was a thick gold necklace that that was considered highly fashionable in the young Black culture at the time.. and considered "dope".

1. I just learned that Johnson was the reason Steel was yanked from his DC origins. 2. I wouldn't mind a Steel reboot as long as the story was set in the DCU, not in the real world.

I do like cheesy films like Steel, Old captain America, Howard the duck, blankman, meteor man, etc as I own a few of them myself and plan to get this and others soon. It's a guilty cheesy bad acting film but it's so bad, it's good but DC needs a new Steel movie.

One thing i hate about modern times is social media, its a gift and curse. Everyones got the most important opinion and they get to shout it all day from a roof top, the biggest roofs. And EVERYONE is a damn movie buff and critic. As a kid me and my family saw this in the theater, we were the only ones there so me and my older borther were laying down in the walking aisle, watching it and we had a BLAST. We loved the movie. We were kids, we had a ton of fun. People forget to have fun, they either need a formulaic film (ALL disney marvel movies) and convicne themselves they love them all before they even see them regardless of the films actual quality, or they need their mind to be blown, or else they give it a 5/10 or worse. Steel is fun, its got issues, many. But the movie is fun. John Henry is an AMAZING charecter, btw did you know that Louise simonson created him to honor Dwayne Mcduffy the creator of static shock and milestone comics? Yeah, thats awesome. John Henry and dwayne both deserve much more than they have gotten. Long story short, yall need to lighten up and have fun and stop needing your wigs to be blown back by everything. Also, stop loving all marvel movies just because you think you have to, criticize them, they need it.
