Imagine this, you live in the 2000s and you don't need to make a physical invention, discovery or produce something new to make yourself stand out, you review the product and upload videos to RU-vid and people find you successful.
It’s extremely common that successful alumni come back to give a speech and receive an honorary PhD? I feel like a lot of the time the people chosen are less famous than MKBHD.
"Purpose is a tool." I love this and thank you for not putting all the emphasis on telling them they should only do what "makes them happy". Success is harder than that.
Your speech was really touching, and you picked up on the most important point, I believe. Most people, including myself a couple of decades ago, start out with goals like making good money or, if self-employed, thinking about independence. These can work for many, but real satisfaction comes from a holistic approach: working on things you truly love day in and day out. Because at the end of the day, we have to realize that life is a marathon rather than a sprint. Great job!
Your insights not only cater to the graduating students, but to all of us on the broader path of life. We should indeed appreciate the present, and simultaneously, explore our passions for a meaningful future.
Congrats to you Marques and all the best to you. Great speech. Time does fly very quickly. It’s funny - I worked in engineering and IT for 25 years and then became a professor of engineering for 15. I recently retired. In some ways, it seemed as though certain things in life took FOREVER to happen, yet looking back, it feels like such a short short time. When. I was getting my Masters I nearly quit because it was taking too long and taking up too much time. I went to the Dean and told him I was going to drop out. He reached under his desk and brought out a very large stack of paper. I asked him what that was. He told me that these were students who started but dropped out. He told me that 5 years from now you’ll look back at now and realize that 5 years has passed whether or not you do your degree. You can decide now to continue and in 5 years you’ll be glad you did. I stuck with it and later went on to get my PhD. It was a lot of work but it allowed me to do things in life that would not have been possible had I not kept going. To all those who are graduating in 2024 - congrats! To those struggling or thinking of stopping - remember that in 5 years you’ll be 5 years older independent of your choice. Time does fly when you look back at life. Marques is right, too about passion. I worked in electrical and computer engineering, starting when personal computers were just getting started. (I am the same age as Bill Gates and the same age that Steve Jobs would have been). I was always passionate about computers and technology. It was and is my hobby. I also made it my career. It’s much easier to make a career out of something you deeply care about. Find your passion.
I graduated 10 years ago and I just discovered my niche 2 years ago. It's really not easy but everyone will find themselves. Just give yourself some time to figure it out. No rush.
Funny enough my physics professor did a speech an he did not hold back he straight used chatgpt and said he used chatgpt 😂. It went like "im to lazy to write a speech so here something chatgpt wrote"
In a world where LLM is widely used, it reminds them of something. I love that part when I ask ChatGPT about MK income. hahahahahahahahaha "As a Large Language Model, I can't provide MK income " hahahah
I genuinely thought he’ll start the speech with,” hey guys MKBHD here… I have been daily driving this degree program from last 2 weeks. Let me tell you all about it “ 😂
You did great! I’ve been with you per your channel forever. You’ve evolved many times throughout the years. Keep being humble, and keep evolving. Congratulations on everything you’ve accomplished, and keep going
I love this speech. It feels more like a friend or relative giving you advice rather than a preach session as most commencement speeches do. Congrats to MKPHD and the graduate class of 2024!
As a Stevens student who graduated yesterday and saw the speech live, you killed it man. And as a fellow Stevens Ultimate Frisbee alum, it was awesome to see the highlights in your intro video. Ducks fly together 🦆
well said, I love how he was himself the whole time, not acting supper wise, or supper educated. He got his point across like a pro while telling everyone that he isn't one. Remarkable!
@@imaginesagiLOL I was a small kid when College Droupout and Late Registration released and I still listen to them sometimes. I also play my old PS1 games every once in a while even though I was a toddler when the console was discontinued around 2004~2005
I just graduated from the school of engineering. You were one of the reasons that i chose Stevens years ago and 4 years later you gave my commencement speech. Everything really come full circle. Thanks for being the launchpad into my career of computer engineering!
Having Marques as my commencement speaker was really amazing, the speech felt relevant and inspiring. Now I have my graduation memorialized on his channel. Go Ducks!
I'm proud of you, big dog. I've been watching you since you were a young bright eyed young man and now to see you as a grown man making a change? 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾Absolutely proud.
I am a current Stevens senior and grew up watching your videos. I saw your speech yesterday at the graduation and to say you are an inspiration for me and millions of others is an understatement. You did a great job on the speech and inspire me to do much more after I graduate next year. Thank you MKBHD, and congrats on the honorary doctorate! P.S. I loved the ChatGPT joke!
@@thomasthetrain2224 Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and try to make friends as best as you can! Everyone says clubs are the best way, but they didn’t really work out for me since I never really went thru with them and the clubs are pretty small at Stevens, but def try to join some because you never know. I met one of my best friends at Stevens by just coming up to him and asking him for help on some calculus homework since I remember he was in my class, and we’ve been great friends since. Other than that, enjoy your college experience, don’t go too hard on yourself, qnd prioritize studying but also going out with friends and doing things you enjoy. You will have a lot of free time and you’re only young once, so make sure you try new things to discover what you really like and dislike :)
"You graduate many times as a person..." Love this so much! Especially coming from someone who actually graduated like a lifetime ago. Very inspirational. Thank you and Congrats Doc!
Congratulations Dr. Brownlee! All your friends, aunties, uncles and associates out here in cyberland are thrilled. Your parents must be glowing. What an honor...you deserve it...well earned!!
Is this sarcasm? Honorary doctorates don't generally call themselves "dr". In fact, it's arguably unethical, because people think you actually completed a doctorate, which they didn't.
@@BadMannerKorea Not sarcasm at all. In my book he's as deserving as an honorary title even if it's not acceptable. He is much respected by millions. LOL you sound somewhat jealous...but that is understandable with your 27 subscribers vs. his 18.9 MILLION!! Just congratulate him..be a good sport and enjoy his success.
@@spoly8139 You called him doctor, and I corrected you. Honorary doctorates don’t generally call themselves doctor. Correcting you doesn’t have anything to do with jealousy, but I know you want it to be about that.
Magnificent speech Marques. I love your authenticity, which something that everyone can identify and appreciate more than anything else. That is what made you successful and what transferred to the graduates, and your viewers. You will have to change your channel to MKBPhD.
This is totally awesome, I graduated the same year as MKBHD. And I can definitely agree and I love that his only real advice is to follow your passion. Even if there’s no financial or logical sense in the moment, if you follow what you dream is and what you believe in, everything else will follow in the future. Edit: Just wanted to add that this is so much better than the Mark Rober commencement speech, the ridiculous arrogance, snootyness, and complete lack of actual good advice in that one was hard to handle. Thank you Marques for being humble, caring and awesome.
You definitely nailed your speech! I love the "many graduations" part because it is so true. We get so busy trying to progress and succeed that we often overlook taking a minute to celebrate the little victories. It's good to pause and reflect. Thank you for sharing your speech and Congratulations on your honorary Doctorate!
So true... Focus on your passion. Focus on what exites you. Sometimes "THE TRUE" passion can be overlooked as just something you like a lot. And as something that might be out of reach/impossible. Take note of those subtle things that excite you, cuz it's easy to get distracted when work (a job) begins to point you away with it's own shiny things.
