Tetris is the PERFECT name for sewing room design. Now add an 8 ft long arm…I have a path all the way around my long arm. I do have a big cutting table that I can raise and lower like your desk. Depending on what I am creating I can put an additional sewing machine on it. I congratulate you on re-designing your space. Very nice and sunny. The best!❤ Update: Always put casters on every piece you can in your sewing room. We always find it easier to re-arrange to fit our ever changing needs. Once we figure it out for efficiency…we are good. Until the next time. Change is good. Love, love this video.
Wonderful job on the new setup! Inspired me to tackle my guest bedroom into a dream sewing studio (from items on hand). 60yrs sewing and never had a dedicated space this large before! Floor plan in the making today. Thanks!
In order to organize things that have gotten out of hand, I do two things: First, I pretend this is not my stuff and I'm organizing for someone else and badly want their stamp of approval on my organizing skills. Second, I set aside time, but not too much time, and then really go at it without thinking much about anything else...just how to store/keep/organize things in a way that they are most usable and easy to put back when I am finished with them.
I have three questions. How do you keep your thread from being dusty and hurting your machines? I was taught to keep my threads in a closed hutch or drawer. I see more and more makeovers with thread being left out on stands. Very curious if you make covers for them or dust your thread or ... And during the video you had a terrific tripod system that would be ideal for me as I try to make drapes, etc. Those would make wresting with off grain handkerchief linen and .so many other tasks so much easier. I don't see it listed. I have been using a self created pvc pipe system and it is so limited! I would love to use what you have/had.
I haven't had too much of an issue with the thread getting super dusty, but I just wipe them off if they do :) I bought the tripod system on amazon...if you search for "photography backdrop" you can find several options that are similar. Hope that is helpful!
Agreed! Just getting that desk out of the window makes the room feel huge in comparison to before! I have some overhead lights that I hung up for filming/sewing that provide a ton of light (you can see them in some of the footage).
Wow you’ve done an amazing job it looks fab and so much bigger. I’ve got the pegboards and I love them.I don’t think you can ever go far wrong with ikea for lots of things. But the star of the show is the desk, that’s really going to make a difference for you. There’s nothing better than a good sort, I find it really cathartic 🤗🤗🤗
Thabks, Vicki! Those pegboard are so nice. And ikea has so many great things for organizing, so much inspiration. The desk is a game changer! I feel so cool being able to press that button 😎
I am in the process of cleaning and rearranging my sewing/quilting room. I know exactly the overwhelming feeling. You have given me some wonderful ideas. 👍 I want to start a RU-vid channel, my first video will be the grand reveal of my space. I will definitely give you a shout-out.
Enjoy watching all of your videos, but these types are videos are the best! You are so real, still kind of a rarity on the net. When I saw that you moved the white shelf next to the window, I kept thinking that it looked like it was supposed to be there from the start. This gives me motivation to start on my own sewing area, which has piles of pre-washed fabric all over the place 🙈 Thanks for sharing as always!
Oh, I am so glad you like these! I enjoy making them and sharing my creative spirals! haha. All my fabric was starting to pile up, too. It was time to get it all in order!
Ahh, it looks amazing! I gasped when you put the needles on the hooks on the peg board, I love that detail! Reorganizing is such an intimidating project, this is great inspiration to tackle it, though.
Thanks, Danielle! When I realized I could hang all my needles on the peg board hooks, my immediate thought was "WORTH IT!" 😂 Those things get so disorganized! SO glad this room is done!
Reorganizing is so satisfying! I love the new mirror, and if I had the space (my sewing room is my guest room as well), that table would be awesome. Maybe one day! I had to go back and check for your old Kenmore to make sure it was still there. It’s always good to have a backup machine, in case the main one needs repair. Those vintage machines are becoming more desirable since they’re so much better made than modern machines. I’d like to see a mini “tour” of it one day 😊
It really is! Makes me feel like I got a new room! And I really love having that Kenmore around. I wish I could say that I used it more. It is so well-made and still works great! But it's not quite as precise as my Pfaff. One day I really should give it a little tribute here on the channel!
The room looks lovely, it’s a shame that we have to mess them up by dragging out fabrics and bits and bobs that we need to use to make are garments, but ha ho it has to be done. I lost my Maltese dog nearly 2 years ago, he too use to love to sit or stand on fabric that was on the floor. Love to see more of your furry helper … love to see more of the 🐕
Thank you! I know, I'm wondering how long I can keep my fabric in order haha. And my little helper is so sweet (I secretly love it when he tries to get in on the project :) ). He is usually not too far away!
Yes, Casey, what a difference and it does look more open and sleek! Now, if only Nippies would take a clue from Flexi Spot!!! Have a great week and a Merry Happy Christmas!!
I want you to know that you have truly inspired me. Oh Casey, your room is so perfect!! I know you think I am late responding but truth is that I have watched this video 2-3 times, trying to see what all I can work into my room!! I really enjoy ALL of your videos
Hi Casey your room looks ace, really calm and organised. I like the versatility of your table on castors. You're very connected to your wardrobe because it's in your sewing room, I really like that. Stops you making loads of bulk that you possibly won't wear much - I think it's a great idea 👍
so amazing!!! wish I have a sewing room like that... but also love that vintage sewing cabinet!!!!!!! does it also have a machine inside?🤩🤩🤩 only asking because I sew on vintage sewing machines 😂😂
You did such a fantastic job of reorganising! The room looks so spacious and easy to move around in! The Flexidesk is so awesome, I love that you can use it to extend your existing table! Seeing you put things on that peg board was so satisfying! 😍 I currently sew in my kitchen/dining area (my kitchen island bench is like your cutting table - hip height and I can walk around it) but I will be keeping this in mind if I ever have a dedicated sewing room! 👍 Enjoy your new space ☺️
Nicely reorganized! I’d be interested to see the electric lighting you have for your sewing and cutting areas. That’s been the hardest part to get right in my sewing room. Thanks!
Thanks! I currently have two large paper lanterns above my sewing area with really bright bulbs that provide a ton of light in the space (the lanterns help diffuse the light so it isn't like a spotlight). I need to reposition them now that things are in different spots in the room.
Good idea. I like it bright but no shadows. Are they on a track or individual plugs? I love the IKEA Skädis system. They used to have wire magazine holders that are perfect for pattern envelopes but seem to only have the wire basket now. I had to get a few extra from Amazon sellers.
Your sewing room looks great! You have inspired mr to tackle mine….it sure needs it. I’m also going to take a look at those peg boards at IKEA. I am constantly searching for a lot of those items you have put on yours and you’re right, it brightens up that wall.
So nice, Casey! Now for the really hard part…keeping it tidy, lol. Where do you store your machines when not in use? I find mine get heavier and heavier as time goes on. 😂. I try not to move them, but since I sew at my kitchen table, it’s inevitable.
Ain't that the truth! haha :) I am basically forcing myself to keep the tabletops clear...we'll see how it goes. But everything has a place now! I'll but the machines on the floor under the table when I need the table clear (that's what I did when I used my other table for sewing and cutting).
Your sewing room is beautiful and so organized! The Flexi Desk is great. You inspired me to clean up my space! After Christmas! Happy Holidays! Thank you for all your videos
Thank you! Yes, save it for after the holidays haha...I STILL haven't put up my christmas decorations and have some gift shopping to do haha. This room project took alllll my energy and time this week! 😅 Hope you have a great holiday!
Is your dog a closet cat ? - it was trying to be very helpful by getting in the way. Just like a cat 😄 Love how you've reorganized your room. That Flexi desk is awesome. Shame I'm in England. The peg board looks good too. It's better to roll jumpers rather than folding them - less creases.
Looks more practical and has better flow! I’d add locking wheels to your center table to add even more flexibility, but as a painter I’m mad for furniture with wheels. I put them on everything I possibly can! Happy sewing! Looks like you’ll have a creativity burst!
that desk is sooo cool! love the new overall layout :) i love organizing but it really is ridiculously overwhelming 😂 especially when you aim at learning from your experience of using the space and making it more functional amazing job, thank you so much for sharing :)
Great Video! Is the Skadis pegboard holding up? Do the pegs stay in the board? When pulling scissors off does the metal stay on the board? Thank you so much for the video.
This room would be a dream! I have a question. I have never thought of a standing desk for sewing. If you are standing, is the cord long enough to have the pedal on the floor? I always imagined it was too short.
It's great to see an adjustable desk on a craft room. I have been tempted to get one but only saw them used on office rooms. Do you have to take your sewing machines off the desk if you want to change the height?
I was too before they reached out--couldn't believe it. I definitely wanted one of these desks! haha. They offered the E7 (which was the one I wanted anyway). The ones with drawers also look awesome!
I just stumbled on your channel and I am now on my second video. Your space is so lovely! Can you please share where you got your tripod with the overhead extension boom arm?
Thank you! I found the tripod at a thrift store (I always see tripods at thrift stores!) and I purchased the boom arm on B&H photo and video (I think this is the one: bit.ly/3FGnILq).
I'm looking for a cutting table that's not too big. Do you think the Flexitable could work as a cutting table? I already have a sewing table and a desk in my office and don't have space for a larger table. I've been cutting my fabric on the dining room table, but I'm getting back pain from being hunched over it 😢 It also leaves a mess in my dining room for days ...
The flexispot table is super sturdy and it's so nice to be able to raise and lower it to preference. You would need a cutting mat if using a rotary cutter, but I think it would make a great cutting table.
Am just wondering what is the height dimensions, width and the length of your cutting table, because I got a cutting table buts it’s tall for me in the length
