I feel I have to add a disclaimer: I'm calling this a "breakdown" video, but in retrospect it ended up being less of an actual breakdown and more of a "guy opens a bunch of project files on his computer and tries to remember what he did last month". But I still hope it's valuable or inspiring to some degree, even though there are many settings I forgot to talk about. Thanks for watching!

No problem. I think compared to the actual "break down" which only serves the people who cares about how these VFX was made, your video is way more valuable than that. The most interesting part won't be the approaches you made these effects, instead, it'll always be the journey and the experiences thoughout these projects. You're not like the other ones, you have your own thoughts and imaginations. There is always a sense of beauty and aliveness in your projects. Keep going and make more masterpiece! (and btw sorry about my bad English lol)

I also noticed that after half the way in video it's not a usual break down video 😆. But it gave me an idea for the competition that just started yesterday on Bad normal's channel. That last render is something that I can probably use in my project. And it's kinda crazy how much time it takes to render that even on the latest GPU

Possible speed boosts: - Use frustum culling for the keyboard scene so you only load the keycaps that you need for each frame - Not sure about this but is it possible to do render time instancing for keycaps? so only load one geometry on the VRAM and let the GPU use that everytime it needs it instead of loading 60000 copy of the same geometry(keycap) - Use separate render layers for trees in the last scene that need 4000 samples and render everything else(grass, ...) with lower samples.

This was very inspirering, the screen shot blowed my mind but is in fact pretty simple! I noticed the drone wasn't properly reacting with the smoke because I know how much air drones move, but the shot still hold up very well

This is very cool and inspiring, would definitely like to see more Embergen-Blender videos. 18:14 I might be wrong, but maybe having persistant data turned on could've saved a lot more time in loading the geo and textures into memory for every frame.
@yamhash
@yamhash Год назад
I was thinking the same thing. It looks like 30+ seconds could have been shaved off from each rendered frame, if persistent data is applicable in this scenario. Hoping he sees your comment and benefits from it in the future. Also, great video Polyfjord!
@fiveoneecho
@fiveoneecho Год назад
@@yamhash I also had the same thought. I tried testing it before leaving my own comment, but I couldn't get a noticeable load time with a quick scene lol My concern is that it only persists shader builds and texture information, but not geometry or geometry modifiers. For some reason I remember learning this when I was struggling with subdivisions being calculated every frame for a static mesh.
@yamhash
@yamhash Год назад
@@fiveoneecho Odd. I'm pretty sure I've seen it work with geometry before, especially in scenes with a lot of objects. The Blender manual doesn't seem to limit it to texture/shader data: "Keep render data in memory after rendering for faster re-renders and animation renders at the cost of extra memory usage while performing other tasks in Blender."
@fiveoneecho
@fiveoneecho Год назад
@@yamhash Yeah, my impression is that is saves any asset data in memory. I just have a memory of getting some unfortunate news about it while browsing forums. It was a while ago and I can't remember what the let down was.

im not sure but i think you could have used persistent data under the render properties tab, so that everything that has been loaded in to the v-ram stays on there for every frame

Hey Asbjorn! Thanks for the great overview! As for adding more details to the smoke (21:20), a fancy shader can help. I did this when using low resolution VDBs. Just mix a noise texture with the VDB density and voila! Btw. It's funny to watch this channel as a Polish person. The logo looks like Poland and when you talk about curves upon curves upon curves and so on (33:47), it reminds me of how angry people talk in Poland. I'm sorry! Just a funny coincidence. 😂

Hey, regarding your concerns with the time it took to render the animation "don't need a mouse" scene (15:33)... did you have the "Persistent data" activated in Blender? (Render properties / Performance / Final Render). I ask because from what I understand this feature would've prevented you from having to load all the data in on every frame render and instead load it just once at the beginning. I've been using it for several projects and it really does speed things up. Maybe you could do a test and see if this would've saved you time with that scene. BTW.... I love your animations.

Quick question about the keycap scene. Wouldn't it have been effective to use "Link Object Data", from one single main keycap model, to cubes for the rest of the keys? I just tried to create a scene with 17.500 keys. I modeled one keycap, and then just placed cubes for all the others. Then I used "Link Object Data", ending up with 17530 cubes and only 176 faces, 214 verts and 416 tris total in my scene using only 2GB of my 4090. It doesn't count them all when rendering. I also had the rigid body collision type set to box, and it doesn't really look that bad. I assume you had your scene set to mesh?
@overseastom
@overseastom 6 месяцев назад
On the "I don't need a mouse" segment, when you said it had to load 30,000 key caps into vram - does it still need to do that if you're using instances? I'm a noob to Blender, AND rigid body sims, so pardon my ignorance, but I thought part of the benefit of using instanced geometry was the much lower impact it has on vram at render time...

WRT the drone prop wash displacing the smoke: I really don't think it would. The amount of prop wash generated a drone at a distance of 10+ feet would start to become negligible. At 30' (10m for my metric brothers and sisters) I'm sure it would be comnpletely negligible. Now, if you were filming from a helicopter...

Yes! I think persistent data would've worked if I had baked the animation to keyframes. But I just saved it as a bake, because it might have simply been to big of a simulation to be able to save it without crashing blender

@polyfjord Incredible work!! Out of interest on that keyboard one, does turning on ‘Persistent Data’ make any difference to render times? It’s my understanding it keeps certain data in memory if it hasn’t changed between frames and speeds up the BVH building end of the render, though I’m not entirely sure how. Does this feature skip over the keys that haven’t moved? I’m still learning how this feature works and when to use it and when not to. I think it skips reloading textures too. If anyone knows, let me know :) Cheers.

15:30 - Doesn't enabling "Persistent Data" in the render settings keep more of this kind of data in memory? Maybe you did have that enabled and it didn't help, but I'm pretty sure that setting exists to help load less data per frame by keeping it around after rendering one. I tried testing it, but I couldn't make a scene complex enough with just rigid bodies in a moment's notice to actually get a noticeable load time per frame.
