In a fishing with Daibhidh first here’s the footage from a salmon based adventure!! We’ve had a dry summer here in Scotland and towards October the river levels started to rise and I got a chance to have a go for some salmon, I did get a chance at one and caught some lovely trout but my first (two!) salmon came the next time I made it out here, I have pooped the footage of my 2 fish in at the end as I only have iPhone footage, better than nothing!

I enjoyed that, my own salmon journey has begun this season on my local river in Northumberland. I have fished like a maniac since opening day for the grand total of one pull. When it came I was stripping line and even though every cell in my brain was screaming don't you dare bloody strike some sort of nervous spasm overtook my hand and I couldn't help but fumble a very half baked strip strike and I pulled the fly out of it's mouth. I was so sick that I could have punched myself in the face! Well done on your fish, the water looked lovely.

Some more experienced anglers have since told me that the correct method is to feel the pull, say “god save the queen” and then lift 👀 I’ve never had a take from a salmon while stripping line but I’m sure the results would be similar to yours! Tight lines!

Hurrah!!!! A single handed fly rod, getting tired of the 14-15foot spey rods dragging the fish in. Using spey techniques is something that I have been thinking about. It's a lovely piece of water

Well there is a time and place for all rods and today you get rods in all sizes and classes even as 2 handed rods so it depends. Also on a big river with deep water or rocky pools the long 2 handers lift a lot of line out of the water making less strain on the leader and hookset in the fish or makes it much easier to prevent the fish from going around or behind rocks and tear the leader. a love for either one or two hander is one thing but u should always pick the correct rod for the situation you are in,

This is beautiful footage, thanks so much! Your fly is covering the water really well, but have you ever tried casting 'back handed' over your left shoulder, from the right hand bank? It could give even better fly coverage - also especially for those lovely pool-end bits, keep the fly working even when the cast is finished, grilse often will grab the fly at that point! Absolutely no criticism, it was simply a joy to watch and listen!

Glad you enjoyed! I actually cut bit out while editing where My backhand cast will definitely need some practice though! I’m going to do some bank maintenance on the other side and cut some trees back so next season there will be more options from either side

The salmon will see the fly from the hold and follow it , attack it and then turn back to the hold so if you wait 2 sec before you lift the salmon will have turned and you hook it in the sissors 99% of the time and you will almost never lose it. It's a bit hard to not lift instantly in the beginning but trust me. It will pay off big time:)

i only came to salmon fishing last season after 40 years of trout fishing and found it very hard not to react to a pull, but eventually it sank in and once you learn not to strike like you would with trout then you'll get success just like you said! i could'nt get my head around the fact that if the fly is in the salmon's mouth then why dont you hook them!! they are amazing fish once you get into them, opening day on the findhorn tomorrow and i'm buzzing right now, i'll never sleep tonight!!

@@johngraham5996 Yeah the lazy way is definately the salmon way and if you are unable to wait then turn the break on the reel down until the river pulls line and tighten the break click by click until the river cant pull the line anymore and let the line go straight on the reel. By the time you react to a pull OR pull instantly for that mather the line will just go out from the reel and give the salmon time to turn etc before you can turn a few more clicks on the break and lift to set the hook. Tight lines on the old Fin:)

Nice mate! What's that setup your using? Hoping to get my first salmon this coming season and looking for a single handed setup.

In this video just my 7 weight/10ft trout rod! Floating line and 8lb straight through leader. For next season I have bought a 9wt single handed rod now for Salmon and pike related adventures. It’s an Airflo delta classic 2 and I’ve had it out on a day casting pike flies. It feels good and strong and I would recommend it as a good budget rod! Tight lines for the year ahead! Hope you get your salmon!!!
