I remember my parents ordering an Acer one of these like 10yrs ago, told them it would be better off running Windows XP when they complained of slowdowns and almost immediately right after it got returned back to the store

I was really surprised when I notice it has an anti glare screen consider when this netbook was meant for giving out to students. However, I prefer a glossy screen.

My BF found his old netbook recently, with an Atom N450 and 2 GB of RAM. It quickly became my retro XP machine, lol. Though it mostly runs games up to 2000 or 2001, nothing newer (for example, Need for Speed Underground 2 from 2004 runs awfully).

I mean, for 15 dollars, it looks like a pretty usable laptop for basic tasks, but considering you cant even buy a smartphone at that price, that is a STEAL!

I agree with you that price is a steal. However, I think it's better to spend more money on a better smartphone instead of this netbook for long term since not a lot of things you can do with these netbook nowadays

@@theevanyeohI mean 2010 was 14 years ago so this laptop is pretty much an e-waste. Useful for someone really in need though. I agree a smartphone is more useful than this laptop but for school work this is better than just using a phone.

to the usb problem of not having spare usb you should try a software called ventoy it allows you to have multiple isos on a single usb without having to image them on the usb so you also save space

Unironically I have used really bad netbooks and laptops my entire life. The best thing to use on this that I've tried is either Q4OS or a minimal Arch install with i3wm. I've gotten 2005 low end Pentium machines working great with those two. Plus, Linux is a lot less picky about hardware than Windows.

You won't be able to go past windows 7 with this, the GPU drivers for the N2600 are very buggy, Intel never supported it past Windows 7 and even there it was some case by case bugfixes. (It may work, but without 2D/3D acceleration), better to stick with Win7 or try some light Linux distros. Other than that, 15$ is a great price.

On Windows 7 you can get the latest version of chrome still, it is called supermium and is made by win32, it works on vista and xp aswell, makes these OSes usable again.

Not bad for the price. Although not usable as an everyday PC, it could still be used for things like retro gaming, Arduino programming, or as an SSH terminal.

On Windows 7 you can get the latest version of chrome still, it is called supermium and is made by win32, it works on vista and xp aswell, makes these OSes usable again.

It runs on 32 bit because there are no official 64 bit drivers for the GPU on this SoC (unless you count the leaked beta driver that somewhat works).

I actually rented to own a Netbook back in 2010 lmao. If I only knew what I know now. 15 dollars is a fair price for something that can surf the web, and not really a whole lot more. 👍

The Atom N2600 performs well on an SSD and 4GB of ram on my Samsung netbook but the integrated graphics absolutely hates Windows UWP apps if it uses the GMA 3600 series. *_You need to modify Windows in order to get versions 8.1, 10 and 11 running stable..._* (6th edit)

I would put an SSD into this netbook but definitely not putting 4GB of ram since the max is 2GB. However I will be keeping this netbook running Windows 7 even if I fresh install it.

@@theevanyeoh I see, cause I was tinkering with the EFI BIOS settings on mine, and it happened to accept 4GB in surprise just experimenting with some ram sticks I had lying around.

I said to myself it wasn't possible from the Atom's 2GB maximum designs as you said but until I put some load under it and amazingly it began utilizing the extra 1.4 GB.

Awesome. These old netbooks are really fun and nostalgia especially with Windows 7. I never have these in my primary school days when it was new at that time. Closest thing I get to experience a laptop at school is those Samsung Chromebook that looks like a MacBook Air but I don't use that a lot though.

you could make this entire thing a personal AI kinda stuff just like jarvis but less powerful and hook it up to a projector add some motion sensing drives, it could really be a very cool project in my opinion

Cloning the original drive to keep the license is not recommended, as it is running a 32-bit version of Windows, which means that, despite the ram upgrade, you are leaving performance on the table. If I were you, I’d remove the drive (keep it if you re so intent on keeping a 32-bit activated windows copy for some reason), install the SSD with a fresh OS. Linux would be the ideal candidate, but if you really need windows, I recommend Tiny10: a cropped Windows 10 that removes evert unnecessary component, streamlining its use and lowering performance requirements. 4GB of ram and the SSD would be enough to run it.
