Best choice for a beginner drone, you have a fantastic piece of technology! Few beginners tips: 1. Don't do range tests over water, that's stupid. You don't know how far it can go so why discovering it by seeing your baby falling from the sky into water. 2. Flying indoors, if you are tempted, use propeller guards, you'll avoid injuries and broken propellers, it's not worth risking. 3. Pay attention to the wind when you start, if you go with the wind when going far away, it will burn much more battery when going back. More often than not, it will use more battery than you think. 4. If you are in an emergency when you'll have low battery situation, if it's windy, it's a good idea to descend. Higher winds up there. 5. Flying over water : if it has less than `2 meters altitude, water reflections confuses its sensors and it can decide to land just like that. Painful lesson that you don't need to learn with disaster. 6. Birds: if it is sustaining bird attacks, don't try to just flee them at same altitude or by descending. Birds uses gravity to accelerate. Immediately switch to sports mode and ASCEND. They won't be able to follow and distance the drone from the threat with minimal risk.
Great tips, Dom! Especially that reflection tip with the water as I like to fly around water and close to the surface for peak cinematography. Thanks for sharing all this :)
I would recommend a landing pad as well. It will help protect your props from getting damaged by tall grass and will help keep dirt and debris from kicking up into your props and gimbal.
@@joshmoxey. You could fly just above the surface around 1 meter but then there are different parameters such does the water have waves, is it windy or muddy water because in this case it confuses the sensors. On still and calm water some reports that 0.5m is fine. The manual on the other hand say do not fly below 3 meters. It's up to you but the closer to the water, the riskier.
I love your vulnerability in this video! Filming your first flight, showing how nervous you were was amazing! This reminds me of I and my friends first flight with DJI Mavick 2! We were nervous, excited and at some point we thought we lost the drone but eventually we figured it out!
I appreciate it, Amarachi! It seems like this video ended up being a very universal experience that reminded people of their first time, too. It's a cool moment that you'll always remember (and thank god you didn't lose the drone lol) :-) Thanks for checking out my channel from PM's video!
@@joshmoxey. indeed a cool moment! Love the experience! I love supporting other creators like myself 😊 You put in good amount of work so it’s worth the support! I connected with you on instagram
@@AmarachiOffor08 I appreciate it! Thank you :) also, the day you said this I decided to deactivate all my Instagrams but expect a return possible this fall to document my photography journey from the past year that I've been working away at offline!
Thank you, Kris! In a world filled with fronting, I always aim to keep it real in my content :) thanks for watching and the sharing these kind words, my guy! 🙏🏻
Nice video! I think this is a good example of how almost everyone's first flight is like. The more you fly, the more you learn and feel more comfortable in the air.
Appreciate it, Will! I'm glad I captured all of the raw emotion because like you, a lot of people have shared that their first flight went a lot like this too. This was filmed a few months back and you're 100% right - it's a breeze now! Super relaxing, in fact! :) Thanks for watching brother
This is exactly how I was when I flew for the first time............I just got my mini 2 for xmas.......also loved the editing and you just earned your self a new subscriber from down under :)
Facts. I still remember how exhausted I was from doing the flight + all the filming for this, but how amazing it felt to have had this experience. Hope your flights are going well, it gets so much easier!
8:16 I was using it to check my chimney to see if I needed to add sealer. So happy I did not have to get out the ladder. I also went to a cliff that I am too lazy to hike up, that made my heart beat a little too fast when I got up there. Forget about racing them around, it is all about getting that perspective. I want to get more shots of some trails. I want the commercial license too so I can turn on monetization for videos that have drone footage in it, but the drone must have transponder similar to real airplanes here in America and the mini 4 has it I think. I did order a transponder though, I picked Spektrum SkyID, but you do have to add a battery to that one. I could build something and strap it to that little drone, put it over the 249g weight limit, but register it for $5 like I did for my large glider. Also. I believe if for whatever reason it can not communicate with satellites and remote, it will just force landing once the battery is low. looks like we do not have to worry about people getting this though, but someone could make one, but it is not legal to send out radio waves that are not approved by the FCC, eventually the police will be issued these radar jammers in places where there are drone problems. www.droneshield.com/products/dronegun-tactical

I too am new to the drone world. 100% Amazing. Practice the hand launch and catch (Makes life so much easier). To launch, once it is on, just give it a slight toss upwards, it will hover. to catch, you almost had it, come in from the front (Camera side), and quickly grab under it (The sensors are in the back). Once you have the drone, the engines are going to rev, and try to take off on you. Slowly just turn the Mini 2 upside down in a smooth motions (you do not want to add stress to the gimble). I'm looking forward to your new content, i enjoy your approach.
Hey mate! I've since learned how to do the catch mid air, but I've never heard of the toss up trick - I look forward to trying this out! I appreciate you watching and sharing this advice with a fellow new drone pilot 🙏🏻
heads up, when it got windy, the return to home was disabled. it warned me about it. you must learn to fly by the google map and keep line of sight. think more like this when thinking line of sight, can the remote see the drone???
Hahaha good fun hay 👍👍enjoy it mate. I fly around my backyard all the time.. you have a compass in the bottom left hand corner for when you don't know where it is mate 🦘👍👍
Can I just say that I literally say mate 24/7 but I live in Canada so it’s so nice to see an Aussie in this comment section say it too lol. I hadn’t a clue about the compass, thank you for point this out, mate! 🙏🏻 have a good one, thanks for watching
I went through a very similar experience just recently when I finally got to fly my new drone. The high I was on filled me with such good anxiety and happiness. I wanted to tell anyone that wanted to hear. So glad that you were able to capture that and share your experience.
I totally felt everything you just said right there. That first flight is such an incredibly profound and exhilarating experience. I appreciate it man! Thank you for taking the time to watch my first flight, I hope yours have been going great too! :)
The mini 2 is a preaty awsome little drone. Just remeber it will always come back with any disconnections, once you learn to trust that feature it gets preaty fun having the confidence to fly it all over the place. Like some others have said don't head out for a long flight on a really windy day. Also I have my return to home hight at about 330 feet, I always set it plenty high just to be sure it will clear everything. Have fun👍
Good look plus be careful, they are alot of fun itt will always come back home just makes sure your control are set right. The rth is higher than the tree's
Welcome to the club. You are able to fly in restricted air space you just have to get permission from the app. We are here to help. I love my puppy and the confidence will increase the more you fly. Enjoy and get the shot. Praying endless blessings
Thanks for the warm welcome, David! I learned how to handle authorization zones about a week after this was filmed, but that was way too much for my highly confused rookie brain to grasp at the time hahaha. Been a blast though, overall! Such a fun tool to get great shots. Thanks for watching and subscribing, brother. Prayers back to you as well, man!
Thank you back, kind sir! Appreciate you watching & subscribing. I’m glad you have such joy around this too - hope your adventures with the SE have gone great so far, Blair! 🔥
All the emotions you had I had, the fear of being somewhere you shouldn’t is such a de ja vu moment for me, the missing drone, “what do I do” moments, well done.
@@joshmoxey. I’m still struggling with the “should I fly here” but no doubt I’ll get there in the end, I find I’m more edgy flying alone than with people I know. But hey it’s happening and yes great video to prove that on those first flights we all go through the same emotions.
@@spencerhawken5162 totally feel you. The more I work on my groundedness (spirituality speaking), the more I’m okay with whatever’s going on so long as I’m following the guidelines. Definitely gets easier with each flight. And thank you again, man!
Nice man, I’ve just got the same drone today for my birthday. I’ve never flew a drone but I’ve watched countless vids on them and wanted one for ages so I can’t wait to try my first flight
Thank you tons, man! Appreciate you watching. Also I've got big love for the Floridians! With everything going on in the world right now, if I could pick one place to live it would be in Florida 👍🏻
Great video, I haven’t found a place in Kitchener yet to fly. But flown a bit in Cambridge. I live in Brantford and fly my mini2 quite a bit around my home. Enjoy the drone, I’ve just subscribed, I hope to see more great drone footage.

Loved this I was the exact same I got my mini 2 1week ago got it cheap on a sale for the combo pack too, great little drone for a person to start flying, keep up the good work my man and keep flying 🎉

Great video Josh and relateable. I'm new to flying my Mini 2 at the moment and it can certainly get your heart racing when its up there. Love the way you cut the scene's quickly. Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, man! Super nerve-wracking at first but if your journey is anything like mine, it will get a lot easier to the point where flying is very peaceful :) I appreciate the kind words on my editing, too, mate! 👍🏻
Welcome to the drone club and also mini 2 club....I think I saw some tips given here already...I'm not sure if I'm repeating but...also check that fir sufficient satellites locked eith home point updated before launching...else yr drone might fly away...I would say 13 or more to be safe ..silly to use bag to launch..might damage your props....learn to hand launch and hand land..although I used to hand catch...but its windy and shaking...not advisable as the mini has a very smallbody...easy to cut fingers unlike my mavic air 1....my 2 cents..enjoy
@@joshmoxey. we just bought our dream home in Hanover! I'll be retired in about 2 years as we paid cash for our new lakeside house with half an acre of land. Hope you have a blast! Got mine in Dec 2020. Tons of content on flying on UTube. 10 ten things not to do, camera settings, setting for smooth video, legal rules etc. I am in Florida and working on a part 107 for commercial use and going to get a larger drone but will keep my Mini2 as it's easy to carry with me. Probably going with the Evo Pro Lite plus as it doesn't geofence but waiting to make sure they iron out a few things. Fly as much as you can to improve skills. Use checklists and get apps to know wind speeds etc. Fly conservative say using rules of thirds so if winds pick up you can always get back. Enjoyed your first flight!
Thank you, man! Shoutout to Florida, I definitely fly more conservative if you catch my drift hahaha 😉 Good luck with your Part 107. Larger drones are definitely better for increased quality of footage, but the ease of restrictions with the Mini 2 is mental. Good to know with Evo Pro Lite though, I'll keep that on my horizon too. Great idea with checklists and counteracting strong winds! Thank you for watching, Tom! 😀
Love how you used the mini 2 as a lawnmower !!! 😂 excellent first vid, the mini 2 is awesome. Remember though, must keep drone in line of sight at all times 😂😂😂😂😂
Got to say, you captured all the fear and anxiety of your first flight perfectly !!! ........... i love the bit at 5.38 in to the video where you say "do things" lol ........ i to will be having the same (probably more) fear and anxiety feelings when my first drone gets delivered next week !!! and after watching your video, it has made my anxiety levels rise up by 200% lol ........... anyway, just wanted to say, great video josh :)
I'm laughing that this increased your anxiety levels as it was supposed to do the opposite 🤣🤣 Whatever fear/anxiety you may experience, just remember it's the mind's lies. If you follow the recommendations/rules, be thoughtful, go high to avoid objects, stay away from airports and other similar zones you'll be comfortable in no time! Thanks a ton for watching and good luck with your first flight next week my friend :)
@@joshmoxey. I got my mini 2 delivered and took it on its first flight (I now have 10 mins in total flight time under my belt 😂) ……. Great job. I just got my drone yesterday. I have only flown the tutorial. I hope I’m as thrilled as you seem to be on my first real flight. Thanks for this.
dji is so good at making it easy af to learn/do. i was nervous as hell the first few weeks but now i can pull it out of a pocket and have it in the air in under 2 mins in the middle of a city. film everything that looks interesting!
I agree! I was expecting this to be even more scuffed, but that kinesthetic tutorial helped a ton. It's so scary/nerve-wracking/uncomfortable at first but by the end of the week after flying daily, I calmly whipped it out and flew it on a beach to get some good b-roll (recent video if you feel like watching). It's become so natural. Also "film everything that looks interesting" is such a vibe right now as I'm obsessed with visual storytelling whenever possible hahahaha. Thank you for watching and commenting, mate! Keep up the flying 🤙🏻🤙🏻
FYI... You do need a license to fly no matter the weight, unless it's purely for recreational intent (US). Uploading to social media (potential monetization) unfortunately doesn't count as recreational. You can self authorize flights on the spot in about 2 minutes... simple. I live in a blue zone, close to an airport, and was still able to fly no prob.
Hey, thanks for your 2 cents. This video isn't monetized so it counts as recreational. And I have also since figured out authorization! Takes a minute to get the hang of it, but once you get it, I agree - it is simple.
Hi Josh, I'm sure it's your first drone flight with the mini2. But your video........, great to watch from start to finish. How many videos have you ever made. Great to see. I'm certainly not afraid of drone flying. I also have a mini2 fly more combo, for about three months now. Had a lot of fun with that thing. You have a regular customer more on your channel and bring on those videos with the mini2. greetings from the Netherlands Harry
Hi, Harry! I’ve made probably 300+ videos in my content creator journey, and have been making videos for many, many years as content is one of my favourite things to create on this planet :) I’m glad you’re having fun in your first quarter with the Mini 2 + Fly More - it’s such a blast! Lots more videos coming soon, but the focus is on self-development videos with drone shots for b-roll sprinkled in when it serves the story! Shoutout to Netherlands by the way, that’s where my Mom’s family is from (currently in Canada). Thanks for watching from start to finish & subscribing, man!
Thank you tons, Sivan! Of everything in this video, the editing is what I'm most proud of. I spent insane amounts of time to make sure it came out really well 🙏🏻
Hello. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. I fly drones a lot these days, started with the MINI. It's an impressive and very capable little drone. I hope you get a lot of enjoyment from yours.
Thank YOU for taking some time out of your day to watch my first flight! It's endlessly cool to me that I can share a time capsule like this of my experiences, with other people. Really glad you enjoyed the video. Having a blast with the mini 2 so far. It's a great starting point for quality and to build skill, but it's just the beginning! Hope you're still having a great time with your droning experience, too. It's a hobby that I'm not sure ever gets old!

Appreciate the heads up, mate! I'm in Canada though, so legalities are slightly different (still figuring it out as we speak). Thanks for watching, AA!
Great vid bro I always wanted a drone and once I was able to get it I got the mavic mini 1 and got better and got mavic air 2 but bro it is nerve-wracking and takes so much practice
Thank you, Roberto! After hours of flying and practice, my nerves are almost non-existent now and I find it surprisingly calming lol. Great choice on the Air 2. The mini's are a good starting point, but I want the HDR and crazy high MP from that air 2 BADLY :-)
I bought the mini 2 flymore combo on jan 15 2021. Crashed twice due to pilot error 1. Drone drift at 1 metre and hit My truck because I takeoff before GPS locked. Minor damaged on my props 2. Force Landing and landed in more than 100 m from home point with 2% battery power left and hit the rock. But till now my mini 2 still fly and no issues found and i am happy with the 12 MP camera that great to get awesome photos. Sorry for my english. Like and subscribed to ur channel!
Oh jeez! That's a rocky start. Glad to hear that it's still working though and you're back to flying again. Thanks for watching, liking and subscribing! Very cute puppy in your PFP btw :)
Get this: My grandparents on my Dad's side left England and immigrated to Canada in the 60's, choosing Kitchener as their city, which my Nan still lives in. But the city that she came from? Liverpool! Small world, man. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Congrats on your successful 1st flight. For mine, the drone was attacked by birds! 2nd flight I flew into an unseen swarm of bees and they chased it all the way back to landing point, 😂😂😂. Made me jump I can tell ya.
Like seeing first timers fly drones I been flying drones for about 10 years I owned a couple of DJI drones but the DJI mini 2 is my fav you should get you a launch pad it would help with the tall grass
It’s better if you get a chance to fly at a park like a baseball field or something with less trees so you can be able to fly the drone at a lower altitude so you can actually see the drone n try out the quick shots lol but that just me that’s how I learn until I got comfortable flying higher n farther even tho they are easy to fly
@@keepingitreel6319 probably a way better strategy but I couldn’t think straight during this video as I was in a total fight or flight state 😂 I’ve since become a ton more comfortable with flying, though!
Instead of a launch pad, learn and practice hand launch and catching. It's super easy and keeps your drone away from all the nasty dust and grit which the rotor wash kicks up. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hLiOB3W9XtQ.html
Really appreciate the kind words, my friend! That's really sweet. And badass, enjoy your first flights! It's a ton of fun once you get the hang of things.
Awesome video! I started flying the phantom 3 five or six years ago (can’t remember), but it was sooo cool cack then and scary! Crashed it into a tree on the first flight but I was hooked. A couple of phantoms and mini’s later and I’m switching to FPV drones.
Oh my god, the tree on the first flight hahahaha. I appreciate that you kept going! FPV's are insane - I plan on switching over to FPV in the future too because some of my favourite drone shots have come in this format. How have the flights gone so far if you've made the switch?
I’ve heard this many times in these comments! I didn’t know this would resonate so well with experienced drinkers at the time, but I’m glad it did :) thanks Steve!
Fun video to watch! Felt the same when I flew the first time. But lucky you didn’t break the propellers with all that grass around! Newbie (me) tip: buy a land pad. They are cheap and great way not to break anything.
Thank you, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video and could relate :) Super fortunate re: propellers, I agree hahahaha. I've since taught myself to land in my hand for extreme versatility, but if I didn't do that I'd take you up on that suggestion. Thanks again, Pavy!
like you i am hoping to fly my first flight this week with the mini 2,but i won't be as brave as you josh, it will be a football field with no water cheers and well done
Great first flight reaction man!! Loved it remember my first time haha nervous as hell. If you want to land in your hand, bring It down while holding your hand underneath and the sensor will make it go up a little bit keeping pulling it down and it will start to land. Just watch your fingers haha practice it so you can master it and take off in the hand as I've been some places where take off and landing is impossible on the floor or any surface apart from my hand. All in all great stuff keep it up
Thank you man! Yes, the art of mid air drone grabs is everything in unusual circumstances and have since taught myself that good old grab and twist for auto shut off 👌🏻 Appreciate your kind words, you watching and subscribing!
Hi Josh, I live in approximately the same area as you. Just bought the mini2 from Costco. Haven't flown it yet. Still reading and learning. Did you buy the DJI refresh insurance or just accepting the risk? I have to decide within 48hours of registering it. Think I probably will, but just the 1 years. Cheers from Elora
Terribly nerve-wracking at first! You're 100% right, after a couple weeks of consistent training it became almost meditative to fly. So much more fun! Thanks for watching 👍🏻
To land on your hand just hold the control stick down with your hand under and it'll slowly come to a stop on your hand. Just watch your fingers. Also, NEVER land on an uneven surface, you might need to replace the warped blades after that.

Dear Josh If you change the way you look at things, what you look at changes. A bit of sage That’s how I sort of flew my mini 2 drone Very nervous I’ve gone into the hills and flew the drone, each time being nervous that I would loose the drone Should learn more about the drone especially about how to find the drone and return the drone home Practice practice practice is what I need Here we need to keep the drone insight Cheers
