I Got a Free Dell XPS 8700 From Family! Intel i7 4790, GTX 745, 16GB DDR3

Today we are going to take a quick look at a Dell XPS 8700 that I picked up from my uncle who wanted me to recover his data off of it. Him and his family did not want to take the desktop back up to NY after he brought it down to Fairfax, VA. System specs include an Intel i7 4790, GTX745, 16GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 1TB HDD.
It turns out that this machine is actually more powerful than my editing rig. I am considering swapping out the board and processor in the XPS with the board and processor in my editing desktop.

If you want to skip the showcase, I start talking at 2:35 . Also, it turns out I am blind, the desktop has 16GB of RAM (not 8GB as I initially thought).

Any reason why you don't seem to be considering using the XPS 8700 as your main rig and wanting to swap the motherbaords instead?

I have an XPS 8700 as my main computer except its slightly upgraded (graphics card was upgraded to a EVGA geforce GTX 1050 TI, has 16GB of ram, 2 1TB 7200RPM + a Sandisk (soon to be a samsung) 500GB ssd and it's running windows 7 and not the windows 10 copy it came with) But even before the upgrades, it was a solid machine and is now even more solid and does everything i need/want it to do. Great Video!

Wow what an absolute beast of a free PC!! You should upgrade the GPU to something like at least a 6GB 1060 or maybe a Vega 56 if you want to go more high-end. Good luck!

So some advice from experience. You can swap the motherboards that would be a pain. You could swap the gpu and psu from you editing rig into the dell and if you need to mod the dell case to fit the gpu or just buy and motherboard and maybe ram and put that into you current system. Just the thing is dell uses stupid proprietary headers which make it hard to boot with out the machine freaking out. Same thing with fans the dell headers are proprietary and you only have what they put on the board.

I own a dell xps 8700 exactly as this one. After 3 years of non stop gaming usage [not overclocked though] I upgraded the GPU to GTX 1060 6gb ddr5 [It's basically the best gpu you can fit in the rig without the need to update the PSU or case] And that actually made the whole rig relevant and new again.. I have to say that this model holds up extremely well even after all this time. Either switch this to your main rig or move the xps 8700 to your new case each of these solutions should be considered as a legitimate upgrade. But if you do deiced to move the motherboard please make a video about it - as there are no current videos about it and the old ones are pretty dull when it comes to the mboard moving process and I am considering moving the mboard to a new case just for the sake of better air flow [this case is nice on the outside but pretty cramped on the inside] Basically it's microATX moboard but because it's dell and somewhat customized I am kind of afraid to move this to a different case .. Please do keep in mind that i read that there's an issue with plugs on the dell xps 8700 front panel connectors but I can't personally verify this. I was very surprised to see a video about this PC so far along the road and i am glad you did it ;) Which ever decision you make I do hope to see a follow up video about his *subscribed*

Nice! I also have a Dell XPS 8700. I've swapped the psu for a xfx 500w, the case for a Thermaltake Versa that my cousin had lying around, upgraded the GPU to a RX480 and installed 4gb of ram (totaling 12gb of RAM, 4-4-2-2) and a terabyte hard drive from the older family computer. I've also grabbed some random drives from old notebooks and such. All of that for less than 1000USD (converted from Brazilian Reais, and our market is all messed up + abusive taxes, its really a miracle that i got such great prices!).

Be aware that the dell XPS motherboard has some caveats to it. Installing a new cooler may be a pain in the butt (you'll have to drill the backplate, nothing impossible) and the IO pins wont work properly, eg. Power button wont work with the pc turned on (or at least it doesn't work in mine, your mileage may vary).
@Montisaquadeis
@Montisaquadeis 6 лет назад
The current cooler on the system should be plenty so no need to swap it out since its a locked cpu and thus can't overclock it.. Only thing I woulc recommend doing to it is to take it apart clean it and redo the thermal paste with something like Artic Silver or other.
@henriquepcorrea10
@henriquepcorrea10 6 лет назад
Montisaquadeis You've got a great point! Can't deny that the stock cooler is already plenty, especially matched with a GTX 1050ti. I'm using a stock rx480, and the airflow was messing with my cpu temps. I installed a hyper tx3 evo, added another fan and it actually worked great, temps diminished by 15 degrees.

To be honest, you'd probably be better off buying a Haswell motherboard and just taking the processor and RAM from the XPS. Dell likes to put all sorts of sensors on their boards that may not be too happy when the board isn't in an actual Dell case. Also, in some instances, the standoffs that the heatsink screws use are actually part of the case, making it a bit of a pain to get the motherboard out. It might also be worth noting that some Haswell boards might even give you an m.2 slot instead of the older mSATA, which the XPS board has.

Just swap the parts from the editing rig into the XPS and use that, the front panel connector on the XPS is non standard anyway

Nope, its part of the panel, unless the model came with the option of a gloss screen. You have to verify replacement screen compatibility and then replace the entire screen.

I love my XPS 8700. I have an i7 4790, AMD r9 270 graphics, 16 gb of ram, dual Samsung 840 SSD in raid0 in it. It's a very good machine, very fast. I special ordered mine with Windows 7 pro, latter upgraded to Windows 10 pro. Well worth every penny. It's faster then the Mac pro (2010) model it replaced in every way for less then a quarter of the cost. If your considering using it for your video editing, upgrade your GPU and don't look back. You'll have a fairly decent experience. Mine powers a Dell UltraSharp u2714 just fine.

I had almost the same config as this as my first computer, mine had a bit more ram Also Since I owned this same pc, the board will indeed fit in any case supporting MATX, as I put my 8700 board in a SPEC-02. Just make sure you have fan splitters because this board only has 1 fan header...

Insanely great CPU in the system. Just need to upgrade the GPU double the ram and maybe upgrade the PSU as well. Also add an SSD if it doesn't have one already. Also nice dust bunny by the battery LOL But yeah Intel stomps all over the old AMD FX line like your 8350. Even back when the 8350 was brand new Intel still stomped all over it. AMD Really dropped the ball with Bulldozer aka Faildozer. Intel hasn't had any competition since the first gen core i series so Sandybridge+ has been pretty much nearly identical in performance. and thuse Not worth it toupgrade from my i5 3570k until Coffee lake/Zen series. Just not worth it to change out at least 2/3rds of my entire system for little to no performance gain. If you check the single thread perforamnce rating in passmark on both the i7 4790 and the amd 8350 you will see the i7 is much higher and thus performs much higher than the amd fx cpu.
