Welcome to my review of the Kona Hei Hei 2020 model. Yes the 2021 model has been released, and yes it’s better, but only because the components have been updated. The frame and basic bike are all still the same.
I got this bike from Kona Europe to test, but this video is in no way sponsored by Kona Bikes.
This is a video inspired my Casey Neistat’s style, but might not work for you, in such a long format. Either way, I hope that it is informative and entertaining, and that you will check out the other videos on my channel, click like, and maybe even subscribe for more.

I bought a'21 Kona Rove LTD gravel bike in September of '20. I'm very happy with it so far and I'm now considering adding a mountain bike. I think the Hei Hei is one of the top bikes I'd be considering if I do add a mountain bike, just based on how happy I am with my Rove.

Ah, good to hear you are digging your Rove. You will really enjoy the Hei Hei. Fast fun and next level trail bike.

Great review! I ride the green 2017 HH crdl and love it for most everything I ride but the really gnarly steep bits. I don’t miss the travel as much as I do overall braking power and geo. (Currently have XT 2 pistons). I’m curious if you think by adding four piston brakes and slackening the head tube by .05 with an angleset, the older HH would feel similarly capable to the new one. I understand the new rear shock has more travel and is a little smoother in its progression, but from someone whose put both bikes through their paces, considering the modifications I mentioned, is the new one THAT much better?

Hey Brett, thank you for the feedback. I must admit that braking has never been a problem for me on the bike, but a friend of mine, the one I did those stage races with, weighs in at 125kg and did. feel he needed more stopping power. He swapped out the 160mm rear disc for a 180mm and only runs Shimano metal brake pads. Has no problems Stopping and the brakes have a nice brake modulation too. As for the head angle, a 0.5° change would be great on the downs, but might mess with the ups a bit. Seems like a strange upgrade, but I began to get so much more out of my bike by changing to a 175mm dropper, from the stock 150mm. Having said all that, the new Hei Hei is way better as an all rounder. I would have bought one this year, if it wasn’t for the need for an ebike, for work, and for the direction my channel is going. The new Hei Hei ticks every box, and doesn’t loose anything with the gains it’s made, like the longer travel, doesn’t make it slower, if you know what I mean. Hope that helps. Ride safe and have fun.

Thanks for the review very useful. Sorry if I missed it but did you mention how tall you are for the large vs XL frame? How was the fit on this bike?

Thanks for the positive feedback Aaron. I’m 188cm (6’2”) tall, with a very long leg (98cm). This was a large frame, but I’m more comfortable on an XL. My own Hei Hei is XL. The large was very playful and great on the descents, but on longer rides I would have preferred an XL. Stay well and keep riding.

Thanks for the great review! I am considering the 2022 CR model but I can only get an XL size. I am 183/184cm and 89cm inseam and relatively long arms . Probably L is the size but do you think I could be well fitted in an XL perhaps with a shorter stem? What is your saddle height from BB? Mine is 79,5cm Thanks for your help. Cheers

Hey, thank you for the cool feedback. I’m 188cm tall, with a 96cm inseam. So I’m running a 94cm pedal to seat. I think an XL should fit you well. The Hei Hei is so easy to flick around anyway and like you say, if you shorten the stem by 10mm you should fit nicely. Have fun. 🤙🏼

Great video. Question: I think you mentioned racing on a Hei Hei. Did you ever lock out for the climbs & smooth flat sections? Also I’m concerned about the geo. My current size Small All Mountain bike has 9mm higher stack & 14mm shorter reach so I feel like I might be in attack position more with the Hei Hei. I’m looking for a bike a I can do marathon XC races on but still enjoy it in my free time. Thanks

Hey Paul. I only ever lock out the rear shock, on paved roads, or super long climbs. Can’t compare geo to be honest, but the bike climbs like a goat and descends like a beast.

Sorry for the late reply.

@@RideBikesBeHappy No worries. At least you didn’t reply a year later like some have. LOL. Did you notice any heel strikes on the chain stays due to their flared out wide position? Thanks
@RideBikesBeHappy
@RideBikesBeHappy Год назад
Hey cool. No heel strikes at all actually one of the few bikes I don’t get heel rubs with. I wear US13 size shoes, so my heels is way far back. At to that the 180mm crank I put on the bike. It’s actually a really amazing bike. Little secret: I just signed a deal to work with PYGA Bikes, for the foreseeable future, but I’m still keeping my Hei Hei as my XC/Trail rig, because it’s just so good 🤷🏻‍♂️

question. contemplating getting a HEI HEI CR/DL. doesn''t the suspension have lock-out?
@RideBikesBeHappy
@RideBikesBeHappy 2 года назад
Ja, the SID and Deluxe both have a low speed compression switch, so basically they have a lock out switch. Hope you choose a Hei Hei, it’s a rad bike.

Just look at the seat post length. Shouldn't you go up one size?
@RideBikesBeHappy
@RideBikesBeHappy 3 года назад
I should actually. I normally ride an XL frame, but the media test bike, I got my hands on, was an L. Ride safes. 🤙🏼
