I love it! You're right---keep your sewing machine simple! The more gadgets, the more opportunities for problems---especially with all the computer stuff they include now days. Also, let me advise you that the reason this machine is still around after fifty years is that none of the workings are plastic---they're all steel---no more broken gears for you---it will last forever. Lucky you! Congratulations! Great purchase!
I read that about the steel gears somewhere but couldn’t confirm it since I couldn’t open it up! I wasn’t sure if it was steel for all models. Guess what, I just opened it up today and yes, it’s all steel! 🥰💕 Thank you for sharing that information with me.
There is a sequence to removing the external covers. Base (4 screws), Side (1 screw), Back (5 screws, there are two under the handle), Face plate (you must remove tension which is finicky), and lastly the front. The screw on the right side, you only need to loosen. Both front and back covers slide straight out don't lift up. You can use the Singer Buttonhole attachment for zig-zag machines, just make sure you don't get a slant shank version as this machine is low shank.
I have this machine and in the UK it's known as the Starlet. It was my first machine and I have made so many items on it. I can't bring myself to seek out in Brevard it's so reliable and it's also like my family. And you DON'T sell family.
