Linus has been using Samsung phones for quite a while now, but after reading constant leaks, he found himself falling for the Pixel hype cycle. With lofty camera claims, a new focus on AI, and a built-in thermometer(?), will Linus be impressed, or has Google promised more than they can deliver?

8:08 - If you go to the "Face Unlock" settings, there's a "Skip lock screen" setting. When turned on, you don't have to interact with the device to unlock it 8:15 - if you go to the "Lock screen" settings, there's a "Always show time and info" setting (aka always on display). When turned on, you don't have to wake the device to use the fingerprint reader 8:22 - On the "Lock screen" settings, there's a "Lift to check phone" setting that needs to be turned on which may not be on by default

Sadly this is not true. Longer software updates mean that it will retain its value for much longer so even if you find a refurbished or used one in a year or 2, used pixel phones just don't normally have cheap prices in the market unlike samsungs which in 3 years of time, loose more than 70% of their original value. Consider the pixel 5 or more valid, the pixel 6 which is still around 400 usd to 550 usd and I really doubt you will find one for 400 usd. Therefore, I'd really recommend getting a samsung if you want to get a used handset

You can disable the need to swipe when using face unlock. Makes the experience fast enough that it is often unlocked and open as I lift it to my face if I'm holding it. Can use fingerprint if I don't plan on lifting it. To use fingerprint unlock, if you do a quick tap on the sensor area then press your finger, it unlocks if you have AOD off. The camera bump is a non-issue, and for me on my Pixel 7, it's actually a positive. It's a grip point when removing the phone from a pocket and it's a stable base when the phone is on a flat surface, allowing for use without the phone wobbling.

You can set the phone to auto unlock when you have face recognition turned on. It's honestly as quick as iPhone. It seems to work just as fast in relatively low light as well. You eventually learn when it'll be too dark for it and just switch to using your fingerprint. It's a pretty great implementation.
@MekKaiver
@MekKaiver 7 месяцев назад
The definition 'relatively low light' is always interesting ;) I have both the Pixel 8 Pro and 14 Pro, and I must say Apple's Face ID is in a different universe. For instance, in a 'dim' hallway in my house where there's still enough light to be able to read a book, Google Face Unlock fails and I have to use fingerprint. It's that tipping point which makes it annoying imho. It doesn't work with sunglasses either. The 14 Pro unlocks in total darkness or with me having sunglasses on, 100% faultless. But to be fair, both systems are so different technologically that it's probably a bit unfair to compare them. Pixel 8 Pro is a great phone though, really like it!
@nikc1313
@nikc1313 7 месяцев назад
@@MekKaiver without doubt the iPhone is far superior technologically but then requires the big pill cutout so it's a trade-off. The pixel is definitely a strong second place. It works brilliantly in normal lighting conditions then the almost as fast fingerprint for when you know it won't work
@xenofastiq
@xenofastiq 7 месяцев назад
What exactly is "relatively low light" though? Many people would still take that to think it would have to be very noticeably dark to start failing, but in my experience so far, even after setting up face unlock in about normal lighting, it fails in lighting conditions that I feel should work
@nikc1313
@nikc1313 7 месяцев назад
@@xenofastiq mine seems to work in pretty dim indoor light. As long as there's a lamp on somewhere in the room it seems to work just as quickly as in day light. Pretty much only time it doesn't work is if I'm outside in the dark or after lights go out in bed and I know to use the fingerprint scanner then.
@Rio-Play
@Rio-Play 7 месяцев назад
@@MekKaiverThis is due to the iPhone actually having dedicated IR sensors ("Dot Projector") that effectively shoots out a a whole lot of IR beams at your face to detect the depth and contours of your face. So technically, your face is being lighted very well and with high precision because of the varying lengths of the IR light streams. You just can't see them or will barely see them because they are just outside of the typical human viewable light spectrum.

Just a note about using the thermal camera to compare the temperature readings. Most thermal cameras tend to use emissivity of 0.95 as default setting, and it works well for most non reflective materials. But to take accurate readings you would need to set the emissivity to correct values according to the surface material of the object measured (in case of human skin around 0.98 according to Flir).

They're very solid phones and 7y OS support is amazing, finally they improved in that! And yes why wouldn't a flagship last as long, others did and with OS support it will not feel as old over time. This will make others thing about offering longer support, but Google needs to gain more traction with Pixel line to make more pressure. Also offer it more worldwide in general.

thanks guys. I've been 'missing' my Pixel 3 for some time. The Pixel 8 Pro reviews are definitely convincing me to change from my Galaxy 20+ . (or wait for the S24 range and get and S23+ at a reduced rate with UI 6)

No you gotta go for the latest model. Nobody wants last year's model.

@@robg915considering the latest model is having exynos 2400 instead of 8gen3 you want the last year's model guaranteed it's gonna perform the same as the 8gen2 or worse or maybe, very slightly better unless it's the ultra model that's keeping the snapdragon 8 gen 3
