hello ppl... pls stop telling me to not take medication because YOU personally didn’t get on with it, everybody has a different experience with medication...also telling me to “do my research” about ADHD medication is kinda.. very.. patronising. I wouldn’t be starting medication without doing my own research, asking other people about their experience and talking to my psychiatrist about it... i am aware of the side effects. i thought i may as well try it out because i do feel like i would benefit from medication

Personal opinion: it’s actually kinda weird to assume that ADHDers who are diagnosed late don’t hyperfocus on/read everything they can about symptoms, treatment, medication and side effects for at least some time

Congrats on everything, it sucks to see you’re already dealing with *that* type of comments but I hope the meds work out for you (they can be life changing) Top tips for starting ADHD meds - look into getting a NHS prepayment prescription certificate (basically you just pay a set amount once a year for all your prescriptions, it makes it a lot cheaper when taking multiple medications and it’s just a lot easier with ADHD symptoms as you don’t have to constantly remember to put aside money for when you pick up your meds) Also it’s easier on the stomach with ADHD meds to eat before take your pills or around the same time Last one - a lot ADHD meds can cause people to feel thirsty/dry mouth, so if you struggle to eat on meds but still can drink then meal replacement drinks are super handy I’m sorry for the unsolicited advice, i wanted to share as found these things really useful when I started ADHD meds and I hope it helps ya

My flatmate was diagnosed with adult ADD at 32. It was comorbid with severe anxiety. He started meds for ADD, but believed he would become addicted or the meds would no longer have any effect over time. Neither was true. He had difficulty sleeping because of the ADD and anxiety and as a result standard anti-anxiety meds didn't work well. Whenever he stopped his ADD meds he got worse- both anxiety and ADD. A change in anxiety meds has allowed him to control that and allowed him to see that stopping his ADD meds made him worse. He is now stable. Although not for everyone, meds do work for the majority of people.

Funny story: I was screened for autism when I was younger. They told my parents that I definitely had autism and probably had ADHD, but they couldn't diagnose me basically because I masked too well. This was when I was so obsessed with Ben 10 that I watched the first four episodes that we had on DVD on loop for hours on end every week, and couldn't eat anything remotely flavorful. The point is, if you've noticed symptoms of neurodivergence throughout your life and either weren't diagnosed or weren't screened as a kid, don't worry, you'll probably be able to more accurately describe your own experience and get a diagnosis as an adult. At least I hope... I'm 14 and school is hell because of my obvious neurodivergence that even doctors agree I have that the school can't accommodate because of my lack of diagnosis. :7( So yes I'm a bit hypocritical in this comment, but the point still stands.

I finally got access to ADHD meds i needed, it needs some adjustments yet. I found the ADHD/autism/related neurodivergencies communities on twitter and it has been helpful to find people with similar experiences and sharing info. This video was so validating as someone who had a similar experienced getting diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I was 17 when I started the process to get diagnosed, though I had suspected for years before that, and I was actually diagnosed at 18. I had very obvious symptoms in childhood but later learned to mask them better, so I was the one to bring it up with the psychiatrist I was seeing. I was so afraid that I was just being paranoid and attention-seeking, so it was super relieving and validating to get the diagnosis.

ADHD is a primary disorder (or something like that), meaning that other disorders like depression or anxiety are probably a result of your ADHD. That was something pretty eye opening for me when I was diagnosed at 22. Getting diagnosed is such a relief for self esteem issues etc. I also got diagnosed with BPD before because there are also quite a few overlapping symptoms (turns out I don’t have BPD). People also always told me I was autistic because like you said - overlapping symptoms but dang, I never once thought of ADHD before I got diagnosed. When my psychiatrist told me she wanted to do an ADHD assessment I was so confused. Now, almost four years later I am SO relieved she thought of it because damn did it change my life.

I feel like the stigma of “adhd is just fidgeting syndrome” inhibited me from getting help earlier, because it’s so much more than that. I’m also a “picky” eater and I have horrible comprehension skills. I’m still getting used to the fact that I technically have a learning disability. it’s crazy. edit: I was also scared of not getting diagnosed with adhd. like you said, it’d be a way of validating what I was experiencing. For example, with my lack of comprehension skills, I was scared that if I didn’t have adhd, that that only meant I was genuinely dumb or something.

Got a diagnosis last week and I'm so thankful to finally understand why my brain works the way it does. When I first realized it, I had that same "ohhhhh that makes sense" moment.

I think what neurotypical people really don’t get about the neurodivergent experience is that it’s really reassuring and useful to have a diagnosis - in my experience, far more so than it is upsetting. When you think you’re neurodivergent but you don’t have a diagnosis, you just go through life struggling with a bunch of things that most people don’t without really knowing why, and often, even if you have your suspicions, you feel like you can’t voice them. Whenever you feel like you can relate to someone’s experience of being neurodivergent, you might feel bad about reaching out to them because you don’t have a diagnosis and therefore you don’t want to speak over someone who does, just in case you don’t actually have a developmental disorder and you’re actually “faking” it, which is a fear that a lot of people have. Having ADHD or being autistic without being confirmed as such is a really isolating state of being, because you know deep down that you’re not quite like your neurotypical peers, but you’re also not sure if you belong in neurodivergent spaces either. Because of these factors, getting a diagnosis can be a real relief for a lot of people - not because ADHD or autism are fun to have, but because it’s good to finally have an explanation for a lot of our experiences, and it’s really nice to be able to engage with other nd people without feeling guilty for taking up space that you don’t know that you deserve.

I saw this on quora a while ago and it really helped me. I couldn't remember who said it so credit where credit is due You belong to a prehistoric tribe, where most of the members go out into the forest or jungle and look for plants and nuts and other good things to eat. They’re the gatherers, the majority, and in future generations they’ll learn to farm. You don’t like gathering. Never did. For you it’s terminally boring. You’re restless, you need something important to latch onto, something you’re really good at. When you go on your first hunt, along with the tribe’s designated hunters, you are finally at home. You’re hyper-focused, alert for tracks and spoor and smells that tell you game is near. You hold that hyper-focus, tracking for days, with an intensity and sense of purpose no gatherer could ever sustain. After the hunt you eat and celebrate around the fire, then crash, maybe for days, then wake up again to boredom and longing for the next hunt for meat (or maybe for enemies). You’re a hunter, essential to the tribe. You live for engagement and adventure and doing something big. The tribe honors you and doesn’t care that you skip the gathering part. Now leap forward a few thousand years. The 21st Century version of you still has the hunter brain, easily bored, resisting regimentation, able to hyperfocus when something really engages you. You’re a minority, just as important and necessary to society as your hunter ancestor, but they put you in a school where most people, teachers and students alike, are gatherers. You don’t fit. They find you “disruptive,” and they’re angry when they can’t get you to stay focused on a task. They decide you must be diseased or disordered, and decide to drug you for your own good. You learn to conform. There are schools that welcome hunters like you, but they are few. Hunters aren’t really welcome until your Ph.D. program, where hyperfocused hunter energy - on things that really interest and engage you, things that allow you to work alone- is an advantage. Now you and your hunter brain are admired and supported and rewarded. You don’t grow out of what is so incorrectly called Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. You grow into it.

I especially liked how you talked about the overlap between Autism and ADHD, this is not super well known. I get a lot of parents asking if their child with ADHD also has Autism, executive functioning struggles are very similar in both disabilities. It is also great how you talked about the fact that you can be diagnosed with sensory processing disorder without having Autism. A lot of the times neurodivergent people also have Anxiety. It can be difficult to find ADHD meds that work well for you, so don’t be discouraged if your Concerta isn’t quite right, there are a lot of options.

it’s called body doubling when having someone there with u helps get something done and it is actually very helpful for a lot of people with adhd

I'm getting tested for ADHD next week and this made me sooo much less scared of that bc I'm really struggling but i do okay in school and don't have the typical hyperactive behavior associated with ADHD so being able to look at an example of a test really helped :) great video, I'm really glad you're happy about having an official diagnosis and I hope medication works out for you!

Woo! I was diagnosed with ADHD inattentive type aged 26! I struggled so much, and I’m glad I’m finally getting strategies. Biggest thing for me is executive dysfunction and being forgetful and losing things. And forgetting what I’m talking about in the middle of a conversation constantly. I think I might be Autistic too, as my Mum and sister are, so yeah. It was Corry’s tweet about you leaving cupboards open that made me think you might have ADHD. I always leave cupboards open!

@@alexrose20 i do in fact have anxiety but the therapist saw it as extreme anxiety instead of mild anxiety and bad adhd oof

@@samh7206 awh that sucks, because for me at least i could tell if certain things i would do were anxiety based or adhd based but everyone else just put it as anxiety and wrote it off but in my head i knew it wasnt the case and it was really hard to communicate how i was feeling :(

Did anyone else who was diagnosed late become super hyperfixated on adhd itself. I couldnt stop looking at studies, films, drawings, comics, memes etc... I was OBSESSED. It was so annoying to everyone around me. Also, Noah being happier with a diagnosis is normal. It's like "wow, this is the turning point in my life whwere ill finally stop stuggling so much". Its the begining of a journey of self discovery and shit finally making sense. Welcome to the gang bro. Also, its so cool that someone I look up to has adhd just like me. Idk if you want to talk more about this topic, but i really would like if you made more videos on it. Only if ur comfortable ofc, you dont owe us anything.

regarding making weird noses randomly, i don’t think most people are annoyed by that unless you’re in a setting that’s meant to be quiet (like a movie theatre) or they’re a very irritable person. i myself am a weird noises person, granted i only do it around people in comfortable with, and i’ve never had anyone be bothered by it. leg bouncing and stomping can get on people’s nerves more easily, but they’ll tell you. there are people who don’t care or are kind and understanding about it, find them and have a stomping party.
