Tbh, while Sonic 2 isn’t a bad game at all, I still play Sonic 1 way more as it’s personally just way more fun for me as I like the stages (yes even Marble and Labyrinth) and especially the bonus stages more from the original 🙂

There's also ANOTHER thing that makes getting the emeralds even MORE bullshit, if you can believe it. You know how checkpoints only spawn the special stage portal when you trigger them? Well, when you trigger a checkpoint, the game sets the flag to trigger all the checkpoints that it considers to be earlier in the stage. So that means that if you reach a checkpoint that's really far in the act, you lose as many chances at getting the emeralds as the number of checkpoints you passed. Works great as a checkpoint system, but it's absolute DOGSHIT for the special stage system.

If you're wondering why there's no ring wrangler for every level? It's because some stages are impossible to get the perfect bonus due to rings being out of bounds over death planes Also 23:25 That's just the recommended sonic 2 playthrough experience why is that an achievement lmao

I remember when I mastered Sonic 2 back in 2022. I felt good when I got the no spindash, Tails playthrough, and no death achievement all at once. I had a fun time with most of the achievements, not so much with the no ring achievments, although I did a debug on Aquatic Ruin Zone and got it anyway, even though I wasn't supposed to. Ahaha. I mastered Sonic 1 in a single night, but it took me a few days or perhaps a week(?) to master Sonic 2.

These "No Ring" achievements would make Ceave Gaming proud, as I remember them doing a lot of videos where they mention "shiny yet deadly coins" in Mario games. So, if I ever take on this challenge (which isn't happening any time soon), and attempt the No Ring achievements, I'm gonna take to calling the rings "shiny yet deadly rings".

Anyways, I'll say this, while I think Sonic 1 had way less bullshit involved, I do think overall it was just a worse experience. Anything that wasn't Green Hill or Star Light was boring, tedious platforming and really worked against the mantra that Sonic had. Metropolis in Sonic 2 is horrendous, but honestly, that's the only stage that I can say is bad tbh. (Although I can see why Sonic 2 is a WAY worse game to 100% than Sonic 1)

Sonic 2 on Genesis was the first Sonic game I ever played, and despite enjoying it a lot despite its flaws, its level design to me feels lacking compared to both Sonic 1 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. First half has levels that feel kinda empty and underpopulated, and second half (Oil Ocean and onwards) feel filled with artifical difficultly. Sonic 1 by comparison, in my opinion had levels more populated with enemies and hazards, and a smoother less abrupt difficulty curve through the game. Sonic 2's flaws show just how troubled its development was.

the diagonal springs slow you down because moving yourself (with the d-pad) brings the air horizontal speed cap (which things that move you, rather than you moving yourself, often override) into effect. sonic 1 had this on the ground too which is why after e.g. bouncing off a horizontal spring holding a direction would slow you down in that game

I don't disagree that Sonic 2 is flawed but also hating the game cuz of UNOFFICAL achievements doesn't feel fair. It'd be like hating melee because you dislike the comprtive stagelist or pokemon because you hate nuzlocking. . The level design and unfair checkpoints, understandable. A random perfect stage on what was clearly designed as an easter egg, seems petty. But then again half of these achivements seem hellish

The crux of why I don't like this game *is* because of the level design, not because of the achievements. Even without the achievements, the design has been my main reason for not liking Sonic 2 for a good few years now.
