I got every flanger pedal to see why no one cares about them

Flanger has always been my least favorite effect on harp -- so much that I haven't featured one on the channel in over two years. I got my hands on every flanger I could to find what I could possibly like about flangers and how to use out-of-the-box flanging techniques in a practical context. I was really surprised, and found some of my new favorite pedals in the process.
The real flangers were the friends we made along the way
More flangers that I had to edit out of the video due to video pacing and length:

The one big omission for me and one I'd love to hear on Harp is the Electric Mistress. It's more Chorus-like than most Flangers, or at least can be used in place of one. I'm also in the position where I wasn't super into the airplane noises, but I fell in love with the Mistress. I had a Stereo Mistress - digital pedal with Chorus and Flanger, then the big Big Box Deluxe, and now I use a little Mooer Eleclady. Another type of Flanger that's kind of interesting is a Hi-Band flanger - I owned the Boss HF-2 for a while, it was a really nice tastey purplish pink and I kind of miss it for that reason. One of the pedals you demo'd probably has it as an option though - I'm not sure I'd keep one around as a dedicated pedal.
@CantStopScreaming
@CantStopScreaming Год назад
Agreed! The Electric Mistress can be a little noisy, but between the two modes you can find some pretty amazing sounds. There's a guy in eastern Europe who makes an exact copy of the original that he calls the Roxanne and I got one... it's pretty awesome, and cheaper than an original :)
@n.s.3812
@n.s.3812 Год назад
Electric mistress has always been my go-to. It’s used by so many guitarists and on so many rock songs that I’ve never considered flanger to be an under-utilized effect. David Gilmour, for instance, has flanger (e-mistress) on a ton of his solos. The Mooer e-lady/elec-lady is a really good inexpensive clone for anyone looking. Other than that, I use my Strymon v2 deco - probably my favorite, (almost) always-on pedal now, which has a great flanger built in (only engaged when pedal is depressed, though, which has pros and cons)

Amazing sounds, great versatility especially speed wise and the fact that it can be connected to other dreadbox effects in a modular synth way makes every other flanger obsolete. Adjusting the rate from a Chromatic module, or modular synth used for a lead line to give some wobble to the rate of the near Barberpole Flange effect the Komorebi can do, perhaps. Chiptune drums run through the Komorebi and use the LFO out to modulate the Treminator, or any other effect that can be modulated for a harp effects chain.

As someone who comes from more of an in-the-box perspective, I disliked flangers for a lot of years, because I was a little too indoctrinated by the echo chamber of music production communities and tutorials all emphasizing very hard on why so-called "flanging artefacts" are not good. ofc the arguments are valid. you wouldn't want a really important sound to have flanging artefacts in mono, when sounding totally cool in stereo, because of the haas effect, if your music could be played on a mono soundsystem. but when you focus too much on such technical aspects and details of sound creation you can lose track of the beauty of those artefacts and the very effects that create them on purpose, in which case they are not called "artefacts" anymore. I had to listen to Witthüser & Westrupp and Tame Impala to realize that flangers, despite being really simple effects, are actually some of the most awesome ones in existence. Flangers are basically feedback vibratos after all. They are the lofiness of fractals, or the vibe of the recursion.

It definitely DOES have a randomized waveform.

I don't like electronic flanging. I learned about flanging as a DJ when you play two of the same record at the same time and same place, but you ever so slightly increase and decrease the speed of one of them. In music production, I produce the flange effect the same way. I duplicate a track, midi or audio, and I start one of the tracks about 0.5 after the other track. To get the full flange effect, I can move portions of one of the tracks slowly, back and forth 0.0 +/- 0.5. It's the 'natural' way to flange and is better than the electronic plugins effect, in my opinion.

I have a Moog MF-108 cluster flux and it is outrageously flexible with negative and positive feedback and everything being controllable from CV. It is another flanger with selectable wave forms.

I never cared for the "jet plane" effect, but any decent flanger stomp can be dialed in to make crazy sounds which nobody ever uses for the most part. I might call it a neglected and underused effect.

I LOVE FLANGER. I love them. I like the electric mistress sound particularly

You know flangers, phasers and Wah pedals are (essentially) all the same thing. They have a guitar's tone knob inside them (well the old school ones do, more or less). Wah pedals have more range and you control it with your foot (unless it's an automated Wah pedal) while phasers and flangers just automate the process. If you're REALLY dextrous you can usually wrap your pinky around the tone knob on a guitar and get a similar effect by rolling it as you strum (sort of).

Adrian belew uses a flanger to make his guitar sound like an elephant on 'elephant talk' from king crimsons 'discipline' album from 1980.

@emilyhopkins as you seem to like more unusual flangers than classic ones, you should definitely check the flange with no name by Lovetone. It’s discontinued. Maybe you can check with Dan Coggins, the man that was behind Lovetone. He now collaborates with Thorpy FX

Flanging always confused me a lot, so I really appreciate the nice long video explaining them and their possibilities. I feel like my brain has grown several more wrinkles after watching this. Thank you guys! (´・ω・`)

You can puree olive, garlic, herbs and oil, and smear the resulting paste (tapenade) on grilled meats, like steak. Its amazing.

I love Flangers. My favorite kind are the ones that let you cue the deep swoosh with a footswitch. Like the Deco or the Catalinbread Zero Point that actually imitate the studio tape flanging sounds. That Chase Bliss Spectre pedal looks like something I'd like to experimenting with. Maybe it will return.

As a guitar player I have a theory why people tend not to like them too much. For one thing the actual effect TYPICALLY only repeats the original signal once then makes it all go wavy as id like to describe it, a Chorus has many more repeats so can make a note or chord sound much bigger than it really is. Also flanger delays are much shorter compared to say a chorus so its quite easy to get lost in a mix or the wavy effect to get in the way of other instruments. Keep in mind that a Flanger slightly changes the pitch of the original sound played and can sometimes make certain notes clash with it, it can happen with really wild chorus effects too but because its numerous repeats that bounces around it hits tones that can sound pleasant or be accepted by ear as being so. Sometimes thats a sound that can be cool and you want it, other times you just don't.

Definitely check out the Digitech turbo flange someday! It also has a really awesome random mode as well as some really glitchy stuff you can pump out of it when you max out the regen.

Yes! Such a great pedal. Although mode 7 is actually a step sequenced flanger. The Line 6 Liqua Flange has both a step mode and a random mode! They're quite rare though, unfortunately.

I love flanger but I never set it too “strong” which is when it sound like shit 😅. I set it almost always like you would set a phaser (that effect would also sound like shit if you set it too wet)

I have been using Flanging for decades. I have Boss bf2 & 3. Go to is the MXR M117, really old school. They can Chorus or Phaser. Just over looked in today's music.
