At this point I can't tell if Em going "METAMORPHOSIS huh Russ" while wearing butterfly earrings is cosmic irony or them just messing with us Harp through pedals is great! And this channel's also a great example of how whatever instrument you play, you can use a bit of tech to make all kinds of cool sounds and interesting music. It's not just for guitarists and keyboard players, and playing a classical instrument doesn't mean you need to put yourself in a box. Also you can hit the box with a mic and turn that into music too!

@@emilyharpist honestly one of my fav things is giving someone who can't play a guitar and some kind of effects (delay is great too, for the layering) and letting them just create and explore without needing to know what they're doing - when even just scratching the strings or tapping the body makes a cool sound, people really get into experimenting! Glorious stuff! I’m reminded of Brian Eno’s collaborations with Harold Budd (Ambient 2 and The Pearl), where Eno treats Budd’s pianos with all sorts of fx from delays and chorus through to shimmer reverb, which Eno was pretty much inventing at the time through creative patching. The beauty of the piano is still there, but transformed in all sorts of beautiful ways to add layers to the improvisation. Pianos are amazing but not sacrosanct; and the same applies to harps.

Here's the thing I love the most out of using pedals to turn the harp into a synth: sympathetic resonance. The way that the harp strings resonate into the wood and the wood transfers a subtle resonation into the other strings creates a very full and lush sound. It's part of why the harp sounds the way it does, but it's not something we normally perceive much. But when effects pedals pick up all those other subtle resonances and amplify them, you get a sound that is so much bigger than just the notes played. That's something that most synths could never pull off, at least not organically. Amazing sound.

The Miku Fart was an auditory nightmare, but I definitely couldn't tell it was a harp! 5/5 The other pedal combinations were much more pleasing to hear. Solid 5/7 for them. I still don't *get* the shock people have with the sound signal. The harp isn't *physically* making these final sounds. The acoustic quality isn't impeded. This is as scandalous as a composer in the 90s using a midi harp in a Gameboy game, or a film distorting a recording for an effect. It's taking a signal that is already dry and adding different textures and colors purposefully (or experimentally) to create a different sound. It's common! And the harp is still making its characteristic sound!

I love that you pulled out the placebo pedal. Even though it’s called as it is, and I stared hard at it, it still sounded “warmer” to me. Funny how those things go.

I really love the sounds you're getting - it gives me a whole new appreciation for an instrument I would otherwise probably overlook. The only thing I would suggest is that sometimes just a hint of subtlety can go a long way, and even take a sound from good to great. For example at 4:16 I might consider just a whisker less noise component, or at 2:48 perhaps a teensy bit less depth to the stutter effect (though I'm not sure that stutter pedal has the same level of control as say, a Boss SL-2 slicer). These certainly aren't gripes, or even really criticisms - it already sounds really good. Sometimes it's just worth asking "what can I have slightly less of" rather than "what more can I add".

Terrific sound design! Love the ambient sounds and stereo splash. The Eventide mixing link pedal is also fantastic for routing, mixing signals, creating a pedal aux signal, reamp stuff, etc. I think your channel is super interesting for sound explorers… I see you explore and use humour, not so much my thing the squeek or the fart, but would love to see you explore more the darkness and shadows. …………… When Persephone left the underworld ruled by Hades, she crossed the 4 or 5 (depending on different stories) rivers of hell. The Styx : the dark abyss of negative thoughts. Phlegethon : the River of Fire, rage, burning anger. Cocytus : the River of Wailing, deep grief and lamentations. The Acheron : the River of Woe or misery where desperation abides and there is no hope. And Lethe : river of forgetfulness or oblivion.

All these people complaining about how effects cover up the natural sound...... Guess they don't like guitar players at all either? Or people who sing in a studio, because those vocals get effects too.... Or really most of all modern music, because effects are everywhere

How can anyone not like your sound? As an electronic musician, blending electronics and acoustics is like my wet dream. I love any sound made electronically, and I haven't heard an acoustic instrument yet that I hate (instrumentalist of 28 years), and I doubt I ever will. So blending both is the coolest thing I could ever think of at least. This is so beautiful.

Also when I do my scores I love treating my analogue synrhs, guitars, vocals, whatveer. I don't understand how people are against experimental processing and warping sound. It's pretty much my Style. I had a hammer dulcimer player on my last feature film length score (film is called Senseless, by TrashArts,) and we sampled every string in pairs using two ebows to create harmonic resonance. There's no sound like it. We still used normal hammer dulcimer at time for arpeggios, glissando, rakes etc, but I made huge orchestral chord extensions like C11+13 made entirely out of drones and then doubled it with synth. In another scene I went a little further and had each arpeggio from the hammer dulcimer doubled as an echo with Om27 Omnichord, and then Ebowed dulcimer drones for each note of each chord following it all in this ethereal spread. So I got the best of both worlds on that score. On my newest score The Pocket Film Of Superstitions, I've sampled segments of the string section I recorded in France and made a whole new piece from them using modulated delays and reverbs from Eventide to expand the stereo spread and trace individual harmonics etc from the original sound source. Again to me at least, there's nothing wrong with warping the sound and making something else. It changes mood and atmosphere. I love your channel keep experimenting ❤️

That pedal combo making the ambient sounds is unbelievably beautiful. I want to buy ALL of those pedals you used to put my harp through. I bought my harp specifically to experiment making conventional and unconventional sounds for original music and your RU-vid channel has become my go to because of that. So these haters can back off bc I’m a big fan here. Thank you.

Silly question: have you ever tried an e-bow on your harp? They work on acoustic guitars as well as electric, and I would be curious to learn what sounds it could generate from a harp (possibly coupled with another effect?). That said, the different string-spacing might make it tricky to use on the harp.

Aha! I hadn't realised that not all the strings were metal . . . And, as you point out in that video, each harp string only generates one note, so you don't get the easy changes of note. Sorry for the foolish question.
