I guess I forgot to mention how it happened. The truth is I don't know. All I know is that they "recovered" my account. My theory is they used the flaws in SMS to dupe my phone or something? Or they bought some correlating information from one of the many security breaches on another platform I use. Who knows. Bummer for us all!

Hey Jon! Just saw a video recently about this type of hack and immediately came to check in, glad you're back! The video mentioned that the hackers do this by sending an email pretending to be a legit company! It sounds all professional but the legal contracts and stuff they send through contain a .exe file that when run installs a virus onto your device that lets them get access to your details! Please check to make sure that your device has been properly cleaned before you move forward in the scenario that this is what happened and the virus is still around. I'm no expert, but I would consider it VERY clever to NOT allow someone to completely remove recovery emails and phone numbers if you've JUST recovered your account. Or at least make it possible to dispuse those credentials. I was genuinely convinced someone had done something to MY youtube account, and was JUST about to unsubscribe before I checked at least a little around, and I found a few of your old videos, that I realized this was your youtube channel, and I ...well didn't. So that's what happened. I found it strange one day when I woke up and saw a Tesla livestream in my sub feed. Immediately unsubbed and checked to see if someone got into my account and started subscribing me to random stuff. Glad to see that you got your account back Jon! Gonna resub!
I've recently gone through the same issue. Account was lost in the early hours of the morning while I was asleep. Same thing: recovery email/phone all changed, usb security key made so I couldn't recover it. The laughable FAQs telling you to "just try again" sucked. No option to contact Google or RU-vid support until I bitched about it on Twitter when they contacted me. Just some advice for anyone with this problem in the future: keep a few privated videos on your account, you can use this is your argument to prove you own the channel (it's what convinced them for me) Of course if your face is in videos then you can just use your face for proof haha Glad it all worked out Jon. I totally get the panic and depression you must have been feeling. Hope 2023 is a much better year!

It was definitely confusing for me to find out that had this Elon livestream in my feed and that I was subscribed to Twitter Tesla. That alone made no sense. To find out that it's supposed to be your channel was a bummer, because you had a lot of gold content, like 'I don't speak German.' There's something dystopic and Kafkaesque about the Google account recovery process requiring you to have access to your Google account. Good to hear you got it back relatively quickly.

Something very similar happened to me. I am so sorry this happened to you because the stress of this situation brought me to tears. These assholes did what's called a 'SIM swap'. With some of my basic info they called my carrier, made up some bullshit, and got my number transferred to their device. With that... they got everything. Two-factor authentication became useless and I had no access to a phone. Needless to say, I have a new number with a new carrier, new emails, and thankfully my lost funds were eventually refunded. To prevent this in the future, I made lots of new emails to create essentially a chain of email recovery, all with different info and passwords. The internet is dark and full of terrors, be safe everyone.
We are all humans who have our own individual struggles. Dig deep and preserve through the hard times. You'll get through this moment and will only become stronger in the end.

I feel you, Jon, I too recently lost an email account due to hacking, which the hackers immidiately deleted and it's impossible to recover, so I've had to spend countless hours recovering access to stuff. I've had that account for 14 years, it was my first ever email. I guess the silver lining was, the hackers didn't use my account in anything illegal. Since you are a creator and a lot of what you do revolves around your google account, I can only imagine how hard this must have been for you. Anyway, hope your luck turns better, and I wish you happy new year!

That's what happened, i saw this channel with this title streaming at the top of my feed. Getting hacked is scary and stressful. And it's always way to difficult to get your stuff back. I lost a steam account years ago and had several attempts made at multiple of my email adresses. I wish you the best, may next year be kinder to you.

That's so weird man. I saw that livestream when it happened and immediately discarded it because I recognized it as a weird clickbait thing. Weird thing was that it showed up in my YT sidebar as if I was subscribed to the channel. Had no idea that it happened to YOUR channel. Maybe that's why it was recommended to me. Sorry to hear this happened to you in particular. I wonder why. What was the goal of the person who did this?

These elon crypto tesla bots suck ass might be related to those same automated crypto elon video channels that were being massed produced a year ago. I'm not sure just how they could've gotten access to your account perhaps you clicked on an email or a link and someone swiped something who knows - the whole scenario sounds stressful as hell but I'm glad the email is back in your hands!! Screw those hackers!!

I was so weirded out when I got on youtube the other day to see a million different accounts all streaming the same scam video, I didn't realize they had hacked a bunch of accounts but this makes a lot of sense. Sorry you have to deal with this.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It seems to be a fairly common fishing scam where they send you a fake copyright email with a link to a page where you put in your info so they can steal it. I've seen a couple of channels I'm subscribed to get their info stolen this way. I'm glad you were able to get your channel back!
